We've started using the market for most fruit and veg. It's lasting longer and better quality.

We also wander along to B&M most weeks and wander around picking up things that are cheaper than Tesco. We easily save £8-10 each week by doing this.

10 Birds Eye cod fish fingers £3.50 !!! I’ve stopped buying them.

I stopped buying them a few years ago, when I discovered that Waitrose Essentials fish fingers were nicer and significantly cheaper.

Turefu · 26/06/2022 11:16

Cancelled magazines subscriptions. Still have pet insurance , but maybe it’ll go too. We enjoy as family going for rides in the car and then for long walks with dog. Now, due petrol cost increase , those rides become expensive. Our favourite buffet restaurant increased their prices from £17 to £21 per person, so we no longer go there.

How do so many people afford such massive, new (within the last 3/4 years) cars? I was looking at the other cars when I was driving to work last week. There are hardly any older cars in the road. Why is that?

When our 12 year old car was beyond repair a couple of years ago it was cheaper for us to get a new car than a used one. The interest rate on new cars was a lot lower and we got a deposit contribution from the dealer and a good deal on our (scrap!) car.
We couldn’t afford to buy anything half decent outright otherwise that would have been the cheaper option.

Yorkshireteabags · 26/06/2022 11:17

Im drinking shit coffee and tea. Dont buy wine anymore. Having 3/4 veggie days a week.
Never put heating on. Showers not baths.
Using slow cooker for stews and curry's a lot.
I dont buy clothes for me unless from charity shop.

devonianBiatch · 26/06/2022 11:18

I've stopped buying chicken breasts, I am buying thighs instead. Roast them, use 75% off the meat for a curry/sweet and sour/whatever and then boil the bones to make stock. Whisk in 2-3 eggs, a tin of creamed corn and the rest of the chicken and it's a gorgeous soup for very little money.

Stopped buying warbs bread and now pick up the own brand farmhouse in Lidl. Had to tell my milkman I can't afford him at £20 a month. And I won't be renewing my motability lease as my electric is going up from £170 a month to £380 😲. So I can't afford the luxury of a car .

SaintJavelin · 26/06/2022 11:19

We've cancelled Netflix, cut back massively on takeaways and days out, DH has cancelled a game server and a few other monthly subscriptions.

As a couple we bring in around £3.5K a month but we're still on the bones of our arse before payday.

MissWired · 26/06/2022 11:25

Butter. Non-butter is disgusting but needs must.
Not baking as much due to energy price rises.
Not getting shopping delivered any more either - the charges all add up.
Takeaways - are now very expensive and frankly cost as much as a week's food budget.
Not buying as much fruit either.
Gone to budget-brand everything now.
Only using ASDA for cat litter - Lidl is a six mile round trip walk for me but it's worth it for the lower prices.
Cancelled the TV licence - rarely ever watched it these days anyway. Amazon Prime is next to go, I think.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 26/06/2022 11:25

Pet insurance has gone here too, it went up to £130 per month for one dog. She’s quite elderly and I don’t think I would put her through an operation now anyway. She had treatment at the vets a few years ago which cost £2000 and insurance only paid about £300 of that. I wish we had paid the insurance money into a separate account for vets bills instead of paying out on insurance.

I had a very successful dry January so I’m going to do dry July as well; we went to an event last night and dh and I had a few glasses of wine £9.50 per glass!! A couple of veggie burgers took the spending money towards £100, plus the cost of the tickets. We have no more events booked and probably won’t book anything else for the moment.

I have a car loan which I am now overpaying to save interest costs. I’ve saved £250 so far and want it gone by early next year, 2 years early. So I have cut back on spending anything I don’t have to, mainly clothes and days out to overpay this.

I was thinking about asking to drop a day at work, but I won’t now, I think we’ll need the money.

gracedentssketty · 26/06/2022 11:27

Making a cheesecake later - bought the ingredients last week but never got round to making. Calls for Ferrero rocher for decoration but they were just £5.59 so am not bothering - previously I’d have just bought them so I guess I’m just using it as an example of how we are now thinking about what we spend a lot more.

£2.09 for a litre of veg oil. Everything we regularly buy in supermarket up. So we are just watching it a lot more - no takeaways for sure

coffeecupsandfairylights · 26/06/2022 11:29

We buy less meat, and less fresh stuff. We've become more reliant on frozen/tinned/cupboard food, just because it doesn't go off.

I've found a lot of fresh stuff isn't lasting even up to it's sell-by date recently. It's going off/mouldy really fast.

Anotherselfemployedcleaner · 26/06/2022 11:29

No ground coffee/Nespresso pods (using Kenco really rich instead, which I like anyway)
No crisps, more nuts
No biscuits/cupboard sweet treats, more ‘plain’ big tub yoghurt and adding frozen fruit
Less fresh, more frozen fruit/vegetables
Less salad/fresh herb items (sowing seeds later today for mixed leaves/cress and mustard/basil
More eggs
Far less fresh fish, more tinned/frozen
Far less meat/poultry - only really buying when reduced to batch cook meals for freezing
No deli meats/pre packed ham etc.
More tinned pulses
No fizzy drinks/fruit juice/smoothies

petmad · 26/06/2022 11:34

Quite a few things actually clothes lol, gone for cheaper toileteries food shopping only buy what ive used i walk everywhere so fuel isnt an issue only use taxis if i absolutely have to a big coat and umbrella if its raining. KleineDracheKokosnuss · 26/06/2022 11:36
  • Books
  • salmon
  • milk products (the companies are currently suffering a 70% loss of margin and will be increasing prices soon to compensate)
  • nuts - you’d think they’re made of gold
  • takeaways - not that we had many
  • day trips
  • kids activities - they wanted to do trampolining but I just can’t justify the monthly cost
  • clothes - I don’t buy these for myself anymore and I darn socks and repair everything
  • meat - we now have many more non meat meals
its going to get much much worse. I really don’t think people have grasped what we’re heading into.
Anotherselfemployedcleaner · 26/06/2022 11:37

And:

Cancelled Sky tv/Netflix/TV license, but kept Amazon Prime and Audible.

Personal and business phone contracts moved to Sky (inc. mum and dads under my account) so that we can share data - loads cheaper for us all.

KleineDracheKokosnuss · 26/06/2022 11:38

My aldi shop used to be £80 a week. It’s up to £110-120. It’s 10p here, 20p there, and it added up fast.

velvetvixen · 26/06/2022 11:40

Your soup sounds lovely @devonianBiatch.I'm an avid chicken bone boiler too, chicken and veg soup, with barley thrown in in winter. Will deffo try your creamed corn recipe!

KleineDracheKokosnuss · 26/06/2022 11:40

Also cancelled the TV license, music subscription and and seriously looking at others.

NewHouseNoMoney · 26/06/2022 11:41

Cancelled gym
Cancelled Netflix
Cancelled weight watchers Blush

Kept Sky Sports for DH as it’s only £20/month

Stravaig · 26/06/2022 11:41

@carefullycourageous Agree. Collective choices mean I can't care for the planet as I would wish to, but the food I buy is one of the few things I can control. Until literal starvation looms, I'll drop a food entirely rather than downgrade.

catpoppet · 26/06/2022 11:41

TV license! Also trying not to eat (fasting) a couple of days a week which helps with the food bill (and weight loss!).

woody87 · 26/06/2022 11:42

murderbythebook · 26/06/2022 07:27

We've sold our second car and are choosing to work from home more to avoid long trips in the remaining car.

No more waffles or croissants at breakfast, toast will do.

More unbranded stuff like Aldi coke.

Meal planning and more "wing it with what we've already got in the fridge" type meals.

The dog's on a cheaper brand of food.

I'm bulk buying when one of our must have brands has an offer to keep the unit cost down.

No more guacamole and other expensive meal accoutrements... we're heading to a more "meat and 2 veg" style.

Increased yelling at DS to get out of the bloody shower

I'm dreading this winter, I think I'll be patrolling the thermostat.

How can it be cheaper to buy meat instead of an avocado? I paid 60p for one avocado in the co op this morning.

KleineDracheKokosnuss · 26/06/2022 11:44

Our car died in Jan just as second hand car prices rocketed. We’re now renting a brand new electric car for three years. Considered buying it but the money just wasn’t there. It worked out best for us, especially given what we’d be spending on petrol now. But it’s not ‘ours’ - were just pretending.

TheFormidableMrsC · 26/06/2022 11:51

zingally · 26/06/2022 10:43

I've really cut back on my car usage...
Case in point, woke up this morning just REALLY fancying a McDonalds mcmuffin. A year ago I'd have hopped in the car without a thought. But today I thought about it. Thought about driving to work tomorrow, and went without.

They are so easy and cheap to make at home, I do this as a treat for us occasionally.
