How often do you wash your walls?

I woke early today. I popped into the bathroom (north north east facing) and the sun was coming in the window at an angle. We don't usually see sun in that room as its gone around by the time we get up.

We have a fully tiled bathroom right up to the ceiling and the sun was hitting it and I could see the tiles were liberally covered in dust. I've never noticed it before, obviously because I dont usually see the sun up there and only have one light in the centre pointing down. The room was done around 4 years ago and I don't think the tiles up towards the ceiling have ever been wiped since. So I've been up the step ladder cleaning them today and feel slightly less minging.

I'm now looking around my house thinking all the walls must be due a good clean. Apart from when we paint or if there's a mark, they never get cleaned.

So, do you routinely wash your walls? 🤔

I run a duster over them when I clean the bathroom. One of those telescopic things that gets right into the coving. Otherwise the spiders might get Ideas.

ShirleyPhallus · 22/06/2022 13:35

Ummmm never?! But then I read on MN about people who regularly wash door handles and stuff which also rarely get my attention.

We did paint a bathroom in a gorgeous deep dark green but I really regret that as it’s got splash marks all around the sink / towel rail so that’s been wiped a few times but otherwise no.

This is actually making me think maybe some of the white walls could do with a bleachy cloth wipe down tk get some of the minor marks and finger prints off

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 22/06/2022 13:39

Yes. Roughly once a month. But I am a professional cleaner - so work routines become a habit in my private life. 🤷‍♀️

Ncwinc · 22/06/2022 13:40

I only wipe down the bits the dog can reach, once a month or so.

Trivester · 22/06/2022 13:41

About once a decade - I have adhd and I need to have a good long think before getting around to anything.

RandomQuest · 22/06/2022 13:42

I clean the tiles in my bathroom weekly when cleaning the rest of it. Other walls in the house, literally never unless I see a mark.

BigWoollyJumpers · 22/06/2022 13:48

NEVER!

Seeline · 22/06/2022 14:21

Oh thank goodness!! I thought I'd found yet another area of housekeeping that I am drastically failing at! No, I don't wash my walls.

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 22/06/2022 14:40

@Seeline dont worry about it. The vast majority of people will do it when they see a mark - eg wet dog tails leaving a trail or a toddler throwing food at a wall. The greatest percentage of those left will do it maybe once a year? eg spring cleaning or decorating. Very very very few will do it more regularly and then it’s usually only areas such as tiled bathrooms (the sprinkle effect!) or kitchens due to cooking mishaps.
fwiw few professional cleaners do it at work unless it’s a healthcare setting - and even then I do wonder if it’s a wet cloth used. (I do a lot of audits!)

motogirl · 22/06/2022 14:42

Er never ... who washes walls? I wipe the tiles occasionally, well when the grout tells me it really needs doingGrin

11Hawkins · 22/06/2022 14:56

Before I paint them..... literally though who has time for that.

Bathroom I mop it with a speed mop on the tiles once a week. Grin

Isseywith3witchycats · 22/06/2022 15:07

we have a fully tiled bathroom and i spray and wipe with one of those telescopic mops on a stick about once a month

minipie · 22/06/2022 15:13

Walls need washing??

I mean, they’re vertical. There isn’t anywhere for dust to settle.

If I see a mark I’ll get it off with magic sponge but the rest of the wall… nah.

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 22/06/2022 15:14

I swizz a duster around and wipe away visible marks (particularly on tiles) but I can’t say it’s very often.

Yodaisawally · 22/06/2022 15:15

It has never crossed my mind to wash the walls.

LauraNicolaides · 22/06/2022 15:16

I've never done general wall cleaning except prior to decorating.

HopelesslyHopeful87 · 22/06/2022 15:28

Tiles in the bathroom every time bathroom gets cleaned.

Painted walls never 😂

ICantEarYou · 22/06/2022 15:29

When one of the kids wipes or spills something on them 🤷🏼‍♀️

Playplayaway · 22/06/2022 15:31

Wall washing isn't really a thing then unless it gets marked.

The bathroom tiles do look a lot better and shinier for their once-in-four-years clean so I might try and do it slightly more often.

Wtf has time to wash their walls amongst all the other mountains of shit that needs cleaning

Giggorata · 22/06/2022 15:40

Wash my what, now?

Cutestbaby · 22/06/2022 15:43

I am surprised at how many people are saying that wall washing isn't a thing. You all must have children with perfectly clean hands. I think I must do the hallway and dining room walls every other week.Kids bedroom walls and doors also often enough, kitchen where the bins are weekly because they do get marked. It isn't a floor to ceiling routine wash of every wall in the house but still wall washing of sort .

MayBeee · 22/06/2022 15:45

Bathrooms tiles probably every 6 weeks or so with a antibacterial wipe or spray , polish off with towel thats going in the wash.
Kitchen when I see a mark , around lights switches , as and when , everywhere else ahem , never , but in my defence I do have a fluffy thing on a stick that the walls get a brush over to keep dust and cobwebs at bay.

parrotonthesofa · 22/06/2022 15:47

I have never washed a wall unless it specifically had a stain or something on it.

HappyHappyHermit · 22/06/2022 15:49

I don't wash my walls. Not sure we could as we have matte paint or dry stone walls depending on the room. I dust them if needed.
