I'm looking for a sick day from work.

What's a good excuse/made up illness for a sickie?

Thanks

MN baffles me.
Last week a woman found money in her house and the whole thread was full of honesty is the best policy you can’t keep the money.
Today is advice on how to steal a day’s pay without getting caught.
Truly bizarre.

Plenty of people don't get sick pay for the first three days.

FemmeNatal · 21/06/2022 18:53

I've never had a job that did not have full pay when off sick; is it really common?

Incredibly common, yes.

MN is always so uptight about pulling a sickie - it amuses me how wound up people get on these threads Grin

What do you work as?

Anon1717 · 21/06/2022 19:25

What do you work as?

Why does it matter?

I've done a whole variety of jobs and have never understood why people get so worked up about what other people choose to do.

jobling · 21/06/2022 19:38

I feel like I’ve headed every excuse under the sun. The tired / I’ve been up all night puts a mark against your name in my world (most mums sleep badly often!). Uncertain times in the world atm, I’d opt for keeping your job!!

It’s a hard fought right for those that do need I cover when they are sick. Duvet Days are something else

925XX · 21/06/2022 19:54

Split ends

Thebeastofsleep · 21/06/2022 19:56

Do people really give more than "I'm sorry, I'm feeling really crap, I won't be in today"?.

StepAwayFromGoogling · 21/06/2022 20:01

How about I'm a lazy freeloading twat who can't be bothered to use up a day's holiday and have opted instead to pretend I'm ill?

superplumb · 21/06/2022 20:04

Covid . Still plenty around. Although I probably wouldn't tempt fate. I'd say sickness bug

It matters if you work in a role that impacts vulnerable people and so on. It's pretty self-absorbed.

It's also interesting when some people on mumsnet moan about salary when having terrible work ethic.

Tigertigertigertiger · 21/06/2022 20:21

No one is entitled to sick days. Unless you are sick

bronzepig · 21/06/2022 20:24

I have regularly lied and told employers/relatives/friends I had a sickness bug when I actually needed time off due to migraine.

This thread demonstrates exactly why I did this & probably loads of other sufferers do to.

Please FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, stop using a chronic illness & disability as a convenient excuse.

bronzepig · 21/06/2022 20:28

AWobABobBob · 20/06/2022 09:33

Oh give over @PAFMO she's not faking cancer, it's a migraine!

Hmm
LakieLady · 21/06/2022 20:31

youboozeyoulose · 20/06/2022 09:41

Agreed. I had norovirus last year. A miserable experience compounded by the fact I worried my manager would think I was lying because it's the go-to excuse.

At 38 I have had proper D&V three times in my life. Some people apparently have it every other week.

I'm 66 and have had D&V twice: campylobacter, followed by noro a year or so later. I had no idea it could make you feel so bad, or be so .... uncontrollable. It was as though my arse was sneezing.

Agree with PPs about not using migraine, too. I used to get them so badly that I couldn't even keep down water and twice I've ended up on a drip in hospital because of dehydration. Thankfully, since my menopause, I rarely get them and when I do they're nowhere near as bad.

Jalisco · 20/06/2022 08:46

As someone who goes to work in pain all the time, because that is my life, I sincerely hope that every skiver and malingerer ends up with a serious “dose” of whatever it is that they have lied about. Your lies about migraines, bad backs and so on make genuinely sick people look bad and lazy – everyone else gets tarred by your lying. And for those who think it that it is ok to lie – no it isn’t.

Have some guts. If you have a problem with your conditions of employment, or don’t like your job, do something about it. Get another job. Refuse to work silly hours. Join a union. Whatever. But lying about being sick doesn’t solve any of your problems, and it isn’t a “victimless crime” because every time you do it, you make those of us who actually struggle with real conditions look like the liars that you are.

100% this.

bronzepig · 21/06/2022 20:38

For example..

Male friend of a friend had tickets to this immersive theatre thing. I was excited to go, but started getting migraine symptoms. Slurred speech, vomiting, dizziness, blindess, the works.

Messaged him explaining and apologising. He was weirdly short with me about it.

I was a bit baffled until 6 months later it came up in front of a mutual friend. The guy genuinely thought "migraine" was known code for I can't be bothered to go out (a la busy washing my hair).

I still don't see why job role is relevant.

It's not self-absorbed to occasionally fib and take a day to yourself either, especially it's not always possible to use annual leave or unpaid leave.

Besides, if an organisation falls apart because there's one person off sick, then they need to look at staffing levels and how the business is run overall. No business should be that short-staffed that one person being absent causes it to collapse.

I'm self-employed and earn a good salary for the hours I work. I spent years working in an employed role where I was too afraid to take time off and I ended up burned out and off-sick with severe stress and anxiety.

And do you know what? I was replaced within days. They certainly never missed me or cared that I made myself sick for them. A job is just a job. It's not worth getting yourself unwell for and I certainly don't take any issue with a grown adult deciding they fancy the odd day off - especially if it's going to stop them from becoming exhausted and stressed long-term.

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 21/06/2022 20:45

I'm entitled to sick days and I am far too honest by never taking them.

And here’s me thinking you were only entitled to them when you were sick.

And honest by never taking them? And yet you are looking for sick lies?

That isn’t my definition of honesty.

I’m with Jalisco on this.

Hmm1234 · 21/06/2022 20:48

You have covid or your child is Ill and needs picking up from nursery/ school

lightisnotwhite · 21/06/2022 20:54

It doesn’t “collapse” on that one day ..mistakes are made, work is set back, other people are made unhappy having to cover, communication is disrupted. A million ways important places can’t work properly.

SummersBreeze · 21/06/2022 21:02

Op here. I have an underlying condition myself and I also suffer from migraines. Not as serious as the migraines mentioned here. There's has been many times when I had to keep on going no matter what and keep going to work too.

I just couldn't face work yesterday. I was probably going to be facing a 10 hour day which was much and the same as today and the rest of the week and that's before I get into Saturday and Sunday. Most workers usually get a day off or two at the end of a work week. I won't even get an over time payment.

I just couldn't face the work day yesterday with all that I have to do this week at home. I spent the whole day work at home - cutting grass, painting, cleaning gutters, vacuuming, laundry before going for a shower at night time and settling down with a drink.

I had a great day at home. I was so productive at home.

Employees need to follow government guidelines on the work time directive which is no more than 48hr in a week unless you have opted out and signed a waiver but there are also rules on breaks

I agree do not call in sick its wrong, it puts others under pressure and depending on your company sick policy when you are genuinely sick it maybe unpaid or you maybe in a sickness process leading to disciplinary

I have managed people who have done it and taken the mickey and it isn't fair on the team and impacts those who are genuine. Using illness that people really do suffer from just to have a day off isn't fair and can impact others who are genuine period pain puts women in the what's the point of employing them they are either moaning about their periods or of on maternity and there are those who like me genuinely suffer to the point of being unable to walk because of the pain

Speak to your manager infirm you need a break and that the hours she has rostered is to much to not have a break until 2nd

What's a good sick excuse to use for sickie day from work?
