Burnout is a perfectly reasonable reason to take time off. It shouldn't be taboo to call in and say you need a day. This mentality of work coming first above all else is unhealthy.

If you all stopped burning yourselves out for fear of inconveniencing your colleagues and pushed back when there is too much work/not enough people rather than pushing yourself and working into an early grave things might stand a chance of changing.

The migraine outrage is ridiculous. I have never once been asked about my symptoms or treatment and I've suffered with them my whole life- partial loss of sight, sickness, slurring speech and light sensitivity so bad it's unbearable. I can't speak, see, drive or even sit up with bad ones. I have medication that helps if I take it at the right time but if I miss the window im out of action until it passes and I recover. Stress is a trigger for them, so yes on occasion when I've needed it I'll call in sick with a migraine and wouldn't have issue with anyone else giving the same reason.

I left my old job with burnout and the second I went on sick leave, they replaced me and I wasn't missed at all. You won't win any awards for burning yourself out and working stupidly long hours.

If I had a colleague who was rota'd to work 12 days straight, I'd be encouraging them
to pull a bloody sickie. That's a ridiculous expectation to put on an employee and it's sad that so many people on here don't see that and just think we should all tolerate being worked to the bone.

Go to the doctor and ask for a sick line for stress and take a month off. Might as well be hung for a sheep as a lamb.

Just don't moan when colleagues do the same and you have to cover their work. Or you could give that days pay back so the people who cover your work get a bit extra. Selfish madam!

Meanwhile, in the real world, most people don't get paid if they're off sick.

And, yet again, if someone being off for a day causes a hugely increased workload for their colleagues, then it's the business that's at fault.

I'm in HR, I would start by saying if you just need a day to yourself, you may be better using some Annual leave if you have a lot left, or upfronting to your boss that you need some time out, short notice and see what they say etc etc, I agree with some of the above it may get you a better deal longer term or get a bit more care, maybe a bit less pressure on you. Sometimes we see staff that do this, upfront that they just need a day off work and we are more inclined to say knock off early another day, look at their workload etc, but if you lie outright and come in looking and feeling fine tomorrow... even if you think no one notices, for sure SOMEONE has noticed... its just not a good look... it comes back to you every time, I've seen it and worse...and if you generally enjoy the job, and your company, treat it well and it will be good to you back!! ~Obviously if you hate your job, taking one sicky is never really going to fill that void...🤒 unless you use it to go for an interview for a new one!!

There's a lot of rattled posters on here. Anyone would of thought OP was planning long term sick

I've one team member who does this. Once we've found a replacement they'll be on their way out. It's the dishonesty as much as anything that's a problem, so I prefer not to have them working with me.

Are you sure? I'd understood that that wasn't legal here, that statutiry sick pay at a minimum was required.

We use self-certification and pay full wages. So far there's only been one person who's abused this.

SSP is only payable from day four. It's very common for the first three days of sickness to be unpaid.

None. It's fraud on your employer and your workmates have to cover your work. Would you make yourself a liar and a thief over one day's leave?

d&v
panic attack
uti
migraine
eyes swollen - hay fever
or emergency annual leave day
no gas - waiting in transco

If the manager asked you and you declined and you've been put down anyway and then go off sick it will look massively like you are pulling a sickie..

saying you 'declined' makes it sound optional.. I'd try an adult conversation with the manager and explain you declined for the reasons you said on here. I'd explain you are not physically able to do it then if that is ignored and they are an ass I'd work the weekend and go off with burnout if I couldn't cope.

Pulling a sickie won't stop the chances of a repeat with shifts.. you need to have a conversation with your manager

My employer tried to book me for next weekend in work and I turned it down just for her to schedule me into work anyways. Which means if I go into work today, I will be working all week, all next weekend, followed by another week Monday to Friday and my next day of will be Saturday July the 2nd. I did not ask for that.

I'm entitled to sick days and I am far too honest by never taking them.

I don't think that's legal to work so many days without a break. I would advise contacting HR

It’s not illegal at all - you can work 7 days a week every week should you wish. The EWTD has an opt out that most shift workers are obliged to sign at the start of their employment. Also, she doesn’t mention how many hours she’s working in that time. It’s perfectly possible to work under 48 hours per week and not have a day off.

But she doesn't wish? The gov.co website says every worker is entitled to 24 hours break in a week

You are not entitled to sick days when your not sick - and you know it. Your setting yourself up for disciplinary action if they found out.

If they have piled that many consecutive working days on you then act all grown up and have a discussion with them. If its a one off thing for a special reason then consider just getting on with it and earning the extra brownie points, if its an arsy employer then just tell them your not doing that many days without a break.

Working Time Regs are basically only enforced and enforceable in things like HGV driving, train driving, airlines etc. Specific regulations apply to these roles.

For peons like the rest of us, you can work 365 days a year for all anyone gives a feck if you've opted out of the Working Time Regulations. It's often in your contract if employment.

Especially if you're in the emergency services or military where they can make you work every hour under the sun despite claims to the contrary: www.gov.uk/maximum-weekly-working-hours.
