I'm looking for a sick day from work.

What's a good excuse/made up illness for a sickie?

Thanks

Many places of work don’t pay employees when they’re sick, though.

Sorry, that was meant to be a reply to Floella22.

What sort of work is it, can you not just email manager and say you are unable to work this weekend as previously stated, as doing so would mean you work 12 days without a break and can she please amend the rota and confirm this in writing.

My employer tried to book me for next weekend in work and I turned it down just for her to schedule me into work anyways. Which means if I go into work today, I will be working all week, all next weekend, followed by another week Monday to Friday and my next day of will be Saturday July the 2nd. I did not ask for that.

I'm entitled to sick days and I am far too honest by never taking them.

Can't you just say I said I couldn't work then, you need to rota someone else for those hours?

Unfortunately lots of bosses don't respect that and will expect you at work regardless.

MN makes me laugh. Write any old bullshit about your employers and everyone pips up about how unreasonable they are etc but plan to take the piss by faking a sick day and you're all chipping up with excuses to defraud the system.
Hypocrites. It's hard being an employer these days. especially with the entitlement people seem to issue themselves.

OP's employer wants her to work 12 days straight without a day off.

I don't think they're remotely decent and tbh probably deserve to have their staff pull sickies occasionally 😉

I wonder if the op has disappeared because she has gone to work?

I'm at home doing jobs and getting so much done on an extra day off and I am loving it.

If you go off sick on saturday they may find it difficult to cover you especially with all the train strikes, do you think its better to just tell manager again you cannot work 12 days

coffeecupsandfairylights · 20/06/2022 11:44

@SummersBreeze - good for you 🥰

Just seen update, aee you on pretendy sick day today then, leaving you 11 days to work. Employers can get suspicious when people take odd days off, especially mondays and fridays and when they have already overbooked you

What I failed to mention is that every day is different. My work hours can be 8 to 12 hour days 5 days a week. The idea of doing that type of a week with not even a day off at the weekend followed by another week of work, just made me sick to my stomach and in my mind too. I am depressed at the idea of it and I think I would get a break in prison or in a coffin.

Yes because in my previous job staff shortages meant that when someone took a sickie the rest of us were even more frazzled. And we all know the people who are not really sick!

If one person being off causes such severe shortages you're left "frazzled" then the issue is with your workplace, surely?

You should have enough staff so if one or two end up off work (due to sickness, child illness, accidents, traffic - whatever) you can still cope.

I suggest you tell the NHS that then.

So presumably you have this week and next week’s work back to back.
You need to talk to your manager.
I wouldn’t do those hours but I wouldn’t pull a sickie I would be truthful and say no I need at least one day off in the middle.
You won’t get sacked.
You may find that in future it will help with managerial expectations.

MumbleAlwaysMumble · 20/06/2022 11:54

@Floella22 we all know the pressure that the NHS is under. And yes that also means the people working there.

It doesnt mean that you (as an NHS worker) should accept it, that it is OK to do. It is actually more likely to lead to people burning out and becoming stressed out - that means long periods off sick instead.

IfIhearmumagaintoday · 20/06/2022 11:55

If you only want one day off go with migrane.

There's a lot of rattled posters on here. Anyone would of thought OP was planning long term sick

The thing is the OP has ALREADY talked to her manager and was ignored.... So I can see why it would feel like wishful thinking to say to the OP "just tell your manager and it will be better next time'. It probably wont if talking to her before hand hasn't made a diufference.

SpaceJamtart · 20/06/2022 11:59

I friend does the phone in lines for her work in the mornings, she tell me the bad ones like the lady calling in because she had sunburn

The one who thought they had a bad haircut and needed the day off to fix it before coming back in

The fully grown adult who phoned in because he thought he might be getting the 'sniffles'

And the one who reported having VD so couldnt come in, we checked on her return and she had meant D&V not VD

Couldnt come in because their IKEA delivery was out that day

It was raining

No clean pants

RuthW · 20/06/2022 12:06

There is no excuse. Either you are too ill to work or you aren't

Some managers are awful.
I used to worry about upsetting managers and then I realised that the assertive staff were never expected to take any crap.
After that I said no more often.
I finally snapped when at break a manager was sarcastic and suggested I was 5 minutes over my time and I stuck two fingers up. I regularly arrived at work 15 minutes early.
I realised I needed to leave.

Strangely I never got reported for my bad behaviour.
When I told my direct manager, thinking he would find out, he told me not to worry as it’s easier to get rid of a verruca than an employee in the NHS.

ChrissyShenkle · 20/06/2022 12:10

Anal Blindness....you can't see your arse coming into work

coffeecupsandfairylights · 20/06/2022 12:28

Nah - I'm good @Floella22

The point is that if a workplace falls apart because one person has a day off, then the issue is with the workplace, not the person who is off.

bluetongue · 20/06/2022 13:26

We’ve all had the occasional sickie. D&V or food poisoning is good. At my workplace you can just text in and say you’re not well. Would only do this once or twice a year if not really sick though and have a duvet day, not a day at the beach or similar (it’s usually because I’m exhausted and burnt out.)

Please don’t use migraine as a reason. It’s a genuine and potentially serious neurological condition and as a migraine sufferer we really don’t need people faking them.

PurpleButterflyWings · 20/06/2022 14:29

Sounds like it’s the wrong job for you OP. Can you find something else?
