Do you store things in your oven ?

DS put the oven on ( yet again !!)
without opening and checking/taking out the trays that were in there.

He is blaming me for the fact that I had put the big wooden pizza board in there (rubbish storage in my place !)

Untill last year I have always had gas oven...so ,,,I would never put gas oven on unless I checked it had ignited..hence see said baking trays and take them out .

Curious what others do now !

Nope. Although it would be fine if we did as we never preheat so would notice.

BiddyPop · 18/06/2022 17:02

My roasting tins yes - as I have the one that came with our previous oven, 3 I inherited from my DGM's house, and DD recently bought 1 that "isn't covered in fat and grease" for her own things.

Nothing else though.

I do have a large wooden board which sits over the single burner on the RHS of the cooker - as it's a very large board that gets in the way otherwise and we very rarely use that "wok" burner in reality. But it does have a few burn marks gathered over the years by accident...

TitInATrance · 18/06/2022 17:04

I don’t store trays etc, but I do use to keep leftover fruit sponge etc out of harm’s way overnight, if the fridge is full.

Lulu1919 · 18/06/2022 17:04

Oven trays but nothing else

UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername · 18/06/2022 17:06

I have a range with 4 ovens and only use one (it was here when we moved in, I didn't buy it!) so I use the rest of them for storing oven trays. There's never a need to move them before cooking though.

My parents used to store theirs in their cooking oven, it would drive me mad.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 18/06/2022 17:07

Baking trays only.. and I double check before I press ignition!!

PritiPatelsMaker · 18/06/2022 17:07

But do you heat your oven up with ALL the trays in there

I only keep a couple in there and yes, I do move them out. Do you have to take out the chopping boards?

Hotnashsummerday · 18/06/2022 17:08

No

uncomfortablydumb53 · 18/06/2022 17:09

No. I take them out before heating

Dodolovesme · 18/06/2022 17:10

Yes, although we probably shouldn't, that's how DH melted my lunch box...
We do it because we have 2 scavengy cats, so absolutely can't leave out ANY food ever. So leftovers often get shoved in the oven or microwave (off) until they can be properly dealt with, but sometimes we forget.

bizzey · 18/06/2022 17:11

Well ,that is what I am trying to explain to him..
Check the oven first before/while putting it on,then there is no problem .

If trays are in there ,they still have to come out before you put pizza or whatever in there.
So check first ?

A large roasting dish if I am going to use it the next day but nothing that would go up in flamable

PinkButtercups · 18/06/2022 17:12

No, I hate things being left in the oven.

KarrotKake · 18/06/2022 17:14

No. But I was in a friend's house just after she'd melted the plastic chopping board in the oven..... it stank and was really hard to clear up!

LaWench · 18/06/2022 17:16

Only baking trays and they're glass pyrex ones. So much easier to clean than metal ones.

bizzey · 18/06/2022 17:17

Well ,on a positive note .
My kitchen has a lovely log burner smell.....and the wooden pizza board is looking very rustic now 🤣

I suppose my question should have been ,,,,
Do you check your oven before putting it on to pre heat ?

irisheyesaresmiling7 · 18/06/2022 17:19

Not in the oven but I keep a couple of metal trays in the grill compartment which we hardly ever use.

I have a friend who stores sweet stuff e.g. biscuits, cakes, buns in their oven... that would drive me nuts having to lift them out every time to use the oven 😬

Hallyup89 · 18/06/2022 17:23

I never check the oven. I don't store anything in it now. I used to leave the odd baking tray in there, but I wouldn't need to take it out as I'd use it for whatever I was cooking. If I was using a different tray or dish then I would just leave it in, no problem.

Not a chance I'd store anything wooden in there though.

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 18/06/2022 17:26

At the moment there are two kilos of pink onions, waiting to be made into pissaladière. They don’t like being in the fridge, they seem to go soft with the moisture.
i also keep all the big casserole dishes in there ( but I cook mainly in the combi microwave, so they are almost just for show/ storage. I inherited them with the kitchen, I wouldn’t have put them in myself, but too expensive to take out. And DH uses them occasionally if he is doing a big casserole for freezing.

Giveitall · 18/06/2022 17:26

It happened years ago …

I once heard a story of a curious cat who went to sleep in an oven which had the door left ajar.

Someone in the warehouse shut the door & turned on the oven.
I’ll leave the rest to your imagination.

Check your oven before you fire it up!

Maxifly · 18/06/2022 17:27

Large roasting tin and an old metal dish which is used only for roast potatoes.

Ivalueloyaltyaboveallelse · 18/06/2022 17:27

No.

mizzo · 18/06/2022 17:38

Aged 16 I set fire to my then boyfriends oven by not checking it before I turned it on, apparently everyone stores their chip pan in there Hmm

rookiemere · 18/06/2022 17:40

I put baking trays in once I've washed them so they can dry in the residual heat of the oven. Nothing else.
