Do you store things in your oven ?

DS put the oven on ( yet again !!)
without opening and checking/taking out the trays that were in there.

He is blaming me for the fact that I had put the big wooden pizza board in there (rubbish storage in my place !)

Untill last year I have always had gas oven...so ,,,I would never put gas oven on unless I checked it had ignited..hence see said baking trays and take them out .

Curious what others do now !

I do sometimes defrost stuff at room temperature by sticking it in oven that’s off. Saves covering it to stop flies and the like. 🤷🏼‍♀️

FLOWME · 18/06/2022 17:42

Just baking tray and metal shelves in mine.

Sgtmajormummy · 18/06/2022 17:43

I keep the perforated tray for oven chips/pizza and my professional grade aluminium baking sheet permanently in the oven. They’re used too often and are too big to have cupboard space.

On most electric ovens the light goes on immediately so DP should have seen what was in there.

BiteyShark · 18/06/2022 17:43

No. I would be to worried about someone turning it on with stuff in it.

ExtremelyDedicated · 18/06/2022 17:46

No, DH puts things in the oven and its bloody annoying.

ILoveAllRainbowsx · 18/06/2022 17:48

Yes, baking trays and I only started doing that about a year ago. Felt so stupid that I didn't think about doing it years ago.

ExtremelyDedicated · 18/06/2022 18:00

I'd far rather find cupboard or drawer space for my baking trays than have to lift them out every time I use the oven and then have them cluttering up the counters (which we don't have so much of). I don't check, no one ever puts anything except trays in there.

Fluffycloudland77 · 18/06/2022 18:06

I keep the halogen oven in the main oven.

InFiveMins · 18/06/2022 18:09

I store all my baking tins and roasting trays in the oven.

saraclara · 18/06/2022 18:10

Only a big roasting dish.

I had people staying for a few days recently. They were really good about helping with stuff, and I'd get up in the morning to find they'd emptied the dishasher and useful stuff like that.

Except after they'd gone I put the oven on to pre-heat, and discovered they'd put a saucepan with a plastic handle in there. 😩

Crunchymum · 18/06/2022 18:14

I store two big saucepans in there.

The ignition no longer works so you have to use a gaslighter, so absolutely no chance of forgetting to take them out (they are in the way to light the oven!)

BrandNewBicep · 18/06/2022 18:15

In my first house, I had a vintage cream cooker that we no longer used, but I kept for storage. My mother made us a christmas cake which I stored in the oven as neither of us really liked xmas cake. Many, many months passed and I went to look in the cooker to find it had been eaten by our two cats who found they could get in at the back!

SanFranBear · 18/06/2022 18:18

Dodolovesme · 18/06/2022 17:10

Yes, although we probably shouldn't, that's how DH melted my lunch box...
We do it because we have 2 scavengy cats, so absolutely can't leave out ANY food ever. So leftovers often get shoved in the oven or microwave (off) until they can be properly dealt with, but sometimes we forget.

This is my reason too.. damn those kitties - thankfully they're adorable but food just cannot be left out!

Paddingtonsmarmlade · 18/06/2022 18:19

I keep my oven trays in it as I have a tiny kitchen and nowhere else to put them. I wouldn't put anything wooden/plastic because I would end up burning /melting it.

Walkingthedog46 · 18/06/2022 18:22

OMG - my mum used to do this and it nearly drove me mad! I understand why she did it as she had a tiny kitchen and no storage space. However, I always forgot she did this, so when visiting I’d switch the oven on and go to put the food in the oven - only to be confronted with baking hot metal utensils and absolutely no work surface to put them down on! Couldn’t put them on the floor either as it would ruin the vinyl. I never learned! 😂.

Summersolargirl · 18/06/2022 18:23

No I don’t and I can’t perceive storing something flammable in there, that’s just silly.

ChicCroissant · 18/06/2022 18:23

bizzey · 18/06/2022 17:19

I suppose my question should have been ,,,,
Do you check your oven before putting it on to pre heat ?

Never. We don't keep anything in there. I wouldn't think of checking the oven first if I was in someone else's kitchen either tbh.

I would find it really annoying to have to take stuff out of the oven before turning it on, and where would it all go? Does it just sit on the worktop then?

AllThatFancyPaintsAsFair · 18/06/2022 18:26

bizzey · 18/06/2022 16:55

But do you heat your oven up with ALL the trays in there ?

If I forget to take out a baking tray I might, I don't see that a any kind of issue though, I just take it out when I realise

Caspianberg · 18/06/2022 18:26

No never

Im always coming home and often just put oven on quickly to pre heat whilst I then sort toddler out etc. So I often don’t look inside the oven before turning it on.

Also, new ovens have the option to turn on remotely via app, so I assume oven makers think people leave the oven ready to pre heat from elsewhere.

Fitterbyfifty · 18/06/2022 18:31

Yes because our kitchen is tiny - but only baking trays and similar and I usually take them out before turning the oven on.

bettbburg · 18/06/2022 18:33

Yes, metal baking trays that are only used in the oven.

ThisTastesSalty · 18/06/2022 18:34

No nothing.

SirenSays · 18/06/2022 20:00

No and I still often check when turning it on after a unfortunate incident with a hidden birthday cake

NannyGythaOgg · 18/06/2022 21:37

I didn't used to but since getting an Instant Pot I rarely put the oven on, so I do now. The only thing I now cook in there is pizza - about once every 2 weeks.

I only store heat proof things though. I always empty it before switching on BUT I am not risking putting anything plastic or otherwise spoilable in.
