I have wasted loads of meat

Cookiecrumble22 · 17/06/2022 08:22

I got a gousto box for 4 days based on 4 people. The meat/fish was frozen. But like a prat I put it in the fridge. Instead of the freezer which meant it had to be eaten within 24hrs that 24hrs has gone so now we can't use the meat/fish. So now I have all that wasted food. Waste of money as well. as I have to replace could do without that. No point to this post what so ever. Just pissed off with myself.

I think you've got confused here - Gousto doesn't come frozen does it? Doesn't the 24 hour thing mean if you do choose to freeze it then use it within that time?

Why would the use by date be so soon if you were supposed to freeze it?

It was definitely frozen. Some tomes it arrives semi frozen.

I think I have confused myself somewhere though. I could have sworn that I read you could use it by the use bye date . But then I read the packaging and it said to use in 24hrs once defrosted . But b4 I had read it was was just using it by the days in the packet thought I had just been lucky not to get ill.

Ok everyone is saying very similar so I'm just going to cook it.

I had some chicken that was in date but was most definitely off so had to bin, use your nose.

Rainbowshit · 17/06/2022 08:50

I've never had gousto meat arrive frozen? 🤔

It doesn't make sense that you'd have to use it all within 24 hours. If you have four meals for four people then it is meant to last 4 days.

I think you have this wrong.

The 16th was yesterday.
If you are at home now, id cook the fish thosmirning if it smells ok, and freeze.
Eat the chicken tonight.

Hugasauras · 17/06/2022 08:53

It doesn't arrive frozen. Sometimes it can be a bit icy from the ice packs that are inside to keep it cool but just put it in fridge and treat normally. Same as Hello Fresh meals.

Cook it and freeze

This

Hugasauras · 17/06/2022 08:55

And yes, the defrost for 24 hours thing is if you stick it in freezer, then take it out a month or something later. Not for meat that's still in date and hasn't been properly frozen in the first place.

Totheweekend · 17/06/2022 09:40

Smell it! Meat and fish that is off smells off. If it is not off then it doesn’t smell off. In my opinion my nose is more reliable than a label or a blanket advice to use within x days.

BarbaraofSeville · 17/06/2022 09:52

Are they sending it out frozen due to the hot weather?

The use within 24 hours advice will be if you freeze the meat rather than cook it straight away, but the best thing to do will be to plan to use the fish today, and everything else in order of date.

As you open each pack, smell it and if it smells OK, it is OK.

OP, if it helps to reassure you, I bought some reduced marinaded chicken from M&S last week and cooked and ate it the day after the use by date. I do this a lot (and eat a lot of half arsed reheated rice) and have had food poisoning once in the last 30 years and that was almost certainly due to a prawn sandwich from the work canteen that would have been in date.

BaconMassive · 17/06/2022 09:53

Dates for show, use your nose to know.

Hallyup89 · 17/06/2022 09:56

Why does nobody have any common sense anymore?! Use your eyes and nose.

dworky · 17/06/2022 10:11

I'd smell it, cook it if ok then freeze what will not be eaten today or tomorrow.

Thursday37 · 17/06/2022 10:15

Gousto do not send frozen food. The 24hrs is for if you decide to freeze it instead of cooking from
fresh as they intend.

Use the dates and common sense. I would bet it is all absolutely fine.

Notajogger · 17/06/2022 10:18

It's still in date (more or less, it's not like it goes off at midnight on its assigned date!) so the frozen/24 hours thing is irrelevant.

AxolotlEars · 17/06/2022 10:29

Sniff test. Cook it. Ignore dates. Food doesn't magically go bad when the calendar changes

perimenofertility · 17/06/2022 10:52

This has happened to me several times with my gousto delivery, I never seem to learn! So, no advice except to say I share your annoyance with yourself.

StormTreader · 17/06/2022 11:20

I never freeze any of mine and sometimes I don't get around to cooking one for the whole week - it's always been fine so far. If it smells fine then its fine.

StaunchMomma · 17/06/2022 12:23

If you cook it you get an extra 24 hours to eat it.

CourtneeLuv · 17/06/2022 12:39

Cookiecrumble22 · 17/06/2022 08:30

I think it has. The use by dates are chicken 18th. Fish was the 16th so fish definitely off. But it Came frozen. I put it in the fridge it says to use within 24hrs after it's defrosted. And its been 3 days .

I'd use all that as long as it smelled ok.

Dates are a relatively new thing.

Doginthewindow · 17/06/2022 13:07

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 17/06/2022 08:34

Fish was the 16th so fish definitely off.

No - the 16th was only 8 hours ago - if it smells ok it should be fine.

This. I can’t believe the food waste…

Doginthewindow · 17/06/2022 13:07

What happened to common sense?

INeedNewShoes · 17/06/2022 13:10

Glad you’ve decided to use it OP.

There tends to be contingency built into use by dates. I’d happily use meat or fish a day (or even two) beyond use by date if it looked and smelled fine and was going to be well cooked.

Nothing happens at midnight as we go from one day into the next that makes foods suddenly dangerous to eat.

woody87 · 17/06/2022 13:18

I'm sorry but you are very confused here. I get Gousto deliveries regularly, the meals don't come frozen and they as meant to go in the fridge. Your email the day before will tell you the best order to eat the meals to ensure freshness.

Also as Pp's have said using your common sense to actually smell the food and see if it's off is handy as well.

Minikievs · 17/06/2022 13:33

Gousto isn't frozen, it just comes with those freezer bags to keep it fresh if you're not in and it's sat on the doorstep.
If it's been in the fridge and the date on the fish is 16th, blimey, I'd eat it up until about 20th probably 🤷🏼‍♀️

millytint44 · 17/06/2022 18:37

CharSiu · 17/06/2022 08:46

I had some chicken that was in date but was most definitely off so had to bin, use your nose.

This isn't necessarily true you know... these recipe box kits vacuum pack chicken and it does say something on the packaging about a smell when unwrapping - you just need to let it evaporate before getting all het up about it!!
