I feel quite sad. Like many I really enjoyed the tv programme, visited Ravenseat for a cream tea and met and chatted with them both.

I know I sound awful but I think Clive is really unattractive both in looks and personality.

I've watched all the shows and Clive's seems a lovely man. Capable, gentle, patient, thoughtful. Watching him build the confidence of the children was just a joy.

I agree. He came across really well in the programmes. He was a great dad, with loads of patience, really good with the kids.

If my husband was having a five year affair I'd be ranting too. I think he's still very much in love with her and wants to take the bad look off her.

This. She had an affair for 5 years!!!

thenightsky · 13/04/2023 22:20

Wait, what? Clive was having an affair for 5 years before she upped and went??

LizzieSiddal · 13/04/2023 22:53

No she was having an affair but he’s admitted today that he drank a lot and was horrible to her. People are blaming her as she’s been having an affair but maybe his drinking and horribleness has been going on for decades. Who knows?!

thefamilyupstairs · 13/04/2023 23:50

Clive's eldest daughter Rosie doesn't think he's a great dad, she did a DM sob story a few years back. Says Amanda was bad to her and as a result her relationship with her father broke down.

Windingdown · 14/04/2023 15:15

Well I suppose it's true to say that none of us know what goes on in another couple's marriage.

LynneBenfield · 15/04/2023 09:06

He’s openly admitted to being abusive and she’s the devil for having an affair? Amazing.

THisbackwithavengeance · 15/04/2023 09:13

I don't think anyone is blaming her as such but she and Clive became famous and probably made a couple of million on the back of their being this tight knit perfect farming family with a gazillion kids, everyone oohed and aahed about how great they were and yet here we find out it was all a sham and completely fake.

That is what most people are upset about I would imagine.

It was real until it wasn't, I expect. She's been around a long time now.

thefamilyupstairs · 15/04/2023 15:05

They have made millions, they've bought several properties in the area and Amanda lives in one now. If he was so bad she could have left. Clive can't have been that bad, she still eats dinner with him every night according to him.

herlightmaterials · 15/04/2023 15:43

Are you suggesting that a woman should just knuckle down, cook, spread her legs, rear the children and be glad her husband isn't that bad?

I do remember one series beginning with an acknowledgment that Clive had been very grumpy lately because he'd been in pain. It now sounds like it was about more than pain. At the same time, age gap marriages work until they don't.

herlightmaterials · 15/04/2023 15:45

Incidentally I think it's lovely they have made millions. Why not? They're out there in all weathers highlighting what farmers do. I'd far rather they were endorsed than made in Essex.

thefamilyupstairs · 15/04/2023 17:22

@herlightmaterials absolutely not. I'm pointing out that Amanda wasn't some vulnerable woman who had no choice but to put up with an abusive husband, as some are suggesting. They've made millions, and fair play to them. They've had the other properties for years. She didn't need to have a five year affair. She could have left years ago. They are still on great terms and she farms alongside him and cooks dinner for all of them every night, according to him.

LynneBenfield · 15/04/2023 17:56

She didn’t need to stay financially but perhaps she felt that it was more complicated given the number and needs of their children and the tying nature of their all consuming farming lifestyle? Who knows, as others have said, we don’t know what goes on inside a marriage. Plenty of seemingly well off couples delay divorce or stay together despite relationship issues.

What's your problem though? Maybe it worked for them at the time? Was she obliged to leave him for full transparency to the viewing public? I don't think so. I also don't think she has ever made herself out to be a victim.

TequilaSunriseforme · 15/04/2023 21:58

Perhaps he hated their family life being aired on TV? I know i would. They have made loads of money from it but he apparently didn’t enjoy it . Strange as he is now in his own programme with his son. Not an excuse for being abusive, but the pressure must have been enormous.
How Amanda had time for an affair whilst running a farm and caring for nine kids, God knows.

herlightmaterials · 15/04/2023 22:38

I expect he enjoys the financial security they now have. Something to think about if you're going to have children so late in life. She was quite right to take everything she was offered. And he certainly never seemed like he wasn't happy about the cameras - he's an extrovert.

He has stepped back from the show with his son.

thefamilyupstairs · 16/04/2023 00:09

@herlightmaterials I don't have any problem? I was just responding to a poster who said Amanda was a victim.
