Is it worth going abroad for 3 nights?

Basically my partners parents had a short break for 3 nights
Monday-Thursday next week
Flying over to Gran Canaria at 10 am Monday and leaving Gran Canaria 5pm Thursday afternoon
They no longer can go due to ill health
They don't want any money from us and will pay the name change ..only thing is it's only bed and breakfast so we will need spending money for meals etc
Is it worth it ? For only 3 nights ?
It's around 4 hours and 30 min flight
I don't know what to do
Is it worth it?
Im off work next week and partner can get time off if we decide to go
Help ..shall we bother ?

For a 5pm flight and transfer time 40 mins
What time do you think they would pick us up from hotel ?

I've been to Gran Canaria for 3 nights at the end of last year and it was bliss! Don't think of the flight as a 4 hr inconvenience, see it as the start of your holiday. Have a couple of drinks, start a new book or download a movie onto your phone/tablet and enjoy! 😎

BlueBlueCowWondering · 10/06/2022 15:57

It'll feel like you've better away for a whole week. Short breaks do you a disproportionate amount of good I think.
and Newcastle airport? It's a definite yes from me 😄

It depends how many pick ups there are and whether you're first or last on the bus.

Worst case scenario is that you spend an hour pootling round a few resorts on the way to the airport and get there 3.5 hours before your flight because there's someone else on the bus who's flight's an hour before yours.

Or you could be lucky and you're last on and they don't pick you up until 2/2.30 pm. In my experience, you don't always know until the day before when you get a note or call to tell you to be ready outside your hotel at X time.

I think 3 nights is too short for that distance.
But if it was free, I would go.

Whopbamboom · 10/06/2022 16:27

We've recently done this and it was absolutely worth it.
Flew out Monday morning, home late Thursday.
4.5 hour flight each way.

In spite of everything in the news, we had zero problems and walked straight through the airport on both our outbound and inward flights. We checked in online in advance, took only hand luggage and were in the airport and through security in under 15 minutes.

You can watch a movie and nap on plane so fresh upon arrival. Night out. A couple of days relaxation, then half a day before home. I would go.

crumpet · 10/06/2022 16:34

I’ve driven 7 hours to Scotland for a weekend. Gone to Paris for a day and a half. Well worth it each time.

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 10/06/2022 16:39

why not? Gran Canaria is nice.

Maybe lunch time depending on how many hotels they are picking up from.

I hope you go and have a lovely time

Hapoydayz · 10/06/2022 16:51

I’d absolutely go but then I like doing short trips like that

Flipflopblowout · 10/06/2022 16:56

Four hours is just a weekend commute for a lot of people.

cestlavielife · 10/06/2022 17:04

Just do it
I would

Then tell us after
A it was great enjoyed the break read on the plane had two days on beach
Or b
Too much hassle for three nights away in sun and beach and nice food and drink am abdolutely never gonna do it again

You wont know til you try

Sirzy · 10/06/2022 17:06

Enjoy!

I am going to the south of France for 3 days in August and can’t wait.

soupmaker · 10/06/2022 17:10

Enjoy. You'll be able to just take hand luggage. I've done London to NY for 3 nights, and London to Dubai for 3 nights. I'd not hesitate to Newcastle to the Canaries.

FrustareNT · 10/06/2022 17:10

Go for it …I am flying to Majorca for four nights next week….cannot wait!! Enjoy 😊

loolpp · 10/06/2022 18:18

Thanks everyone it's sorted
We have booked the doubletree at Newcastle airport for Sunday night
Gonna go over for 3pm and have a nice relaxing night, meal and chill out in the room
So I can pretend it's a 4 night holiday ha ha
How much spending money between two of us? 400 euro each ?

Glad you’re doing it, it will be a great little break! We’ve done 4 nights in Las Vegas a few years ago which was brilliant.

Crazykefir · 10/06/2022 18:39

400 euros is a lot. Are all the islands duty free still?? You can go mad in the perfume shops. Just make sure what you buy is 100ml or less.

SunshineThelma · 10/06/2022 18:45

For me it'd depend on how far you have to travel to get to/from the airport in the UK. Our local (northern) airport is pretty close and we can get there in 20 minutes so it adds very little to the travel time. Flying from Heathrow or Gatwick on the other hand would add the best part of a day either side to get down there and suddenly it's much more bother for a short break.

loolpp · 10/06/2022 18:52

@SunshineThelma luckily I'm only 35 mins from Newcastle airport (25 on a no traffic day ) so it's not bad

If you haven’t already I would book private taxis in advance to and from the hotel, that way you won’t be hanging around for transfers and can leave later on Thursday. I don’t reckon you will spend 800 euros in 3 nights, do you have a fee free card to use instead of cash?

fruitbrewhaha · 10/06/2022 19:21

yeah just go

lanbro · 10/06/2022 19:22

Personally I would go to Spain or the Balerics for 3 nights, and regularly do, but equally if someone was giving me the holiday I'd go! I've flown 3 times from Newcastle this year with no delays, the real problems seem to be at Manchester. Do it!
