This little fella flew into my living room 🦇

Saw something out then corner of my eye and thought it was a moth. Then had two hours of it swooping then resting. Windows, front and back doors opened - it wouldn’t blooming leave.

Contained it in the living room when I went to bed. Phoned the bat helpline today - got to try the same again tonight. Am now sat here waiting for him to emerge from wherever he’s been hiding all day.

I am a trained bat expert with many years experience in this area and I can confidently tell you all that you're wrong about the species. It is in fact the lesser spotted Welsh smooshy-face and I'll be round with my largest tupperware at your earliest convenience. 🤓

I’m feeling like a bit of an idiot, sat here with no lights on as the daylight gradually fades. No streetlights here, so gets very dark in the house. Will have to stay on MN so I have the light of my screen.

I’m thinking of calling him Steve. No idea why, that’s the name that came to mind when he was hanging upside down and staring at me last night.

Nooo don't do that, he'll fly to your phone and just plonk himself on your screen giving you a heart attack and subsequently the Bat too

Snid · 07/06/2022 21:24

It’s a lemon drizzle bat

SlatsandFlaps · 07/06/2022 21:26

There's a 🦇 who flies in figure of 8 formation over my Mum's front garden.........
I wonder what that signifies?

😳

vipersnest1 · 07/06/2022 20:41

I'd go with:
One window open. All other windows and doors closed. All lights off so the open window is the brightest thing in the room.
Hopefully the bat will fly out.
I'm not a 🦇 expert, but it works for birds!

I did this when I got one in the garage. My bats are very casual and will fly past my face in the garden or over the dog about a foot higher than his back.

I think they do it to go through and through the swarm of insects they are feeding on.

Ballonz is a very good call. Maybe with a middle name of Hugo.

And I am loving the new identification from the bat expert 😂

He still hasn’t appeared. I’m getting a bit twitchy about where he could be. The lady on the phone said they can get into tiny spaces - he could be anywhere in the house!

I have a regular who circles my garden a couple of times before striking the clematis.🦇❤

thequeenoftarts · 07/06/2022 22:29

A fishing net on a stick works wonders to let you catch them, then a small facecloth and take him or her outside after dusk and place battie on a tree branch, not the ground. They need to take off from a height to fly. I am used to handling them as have a bat roost in my attic and they often pop in for a visit lol

Furries · 07/06/2022 22:32

No sign of him and I need to go to bed shortly. It’s an old house, I wonder if he managed to find a small gap somewhere to get out during the night?

hedgehogger1 · 07/06/2022 22:34

Many years ago working in another country, when bats got indoors they'd get them with a water pistol as they can't fly with wet wings, then remove them. Not sure on the welfare aspect though!

I love this family! They have a sausage dog called Otis too don’t they?

I’m jealous of all these bat encounters.

@UselessTrees Grin😂

He's adorable 😍 I hope he has managed to escape.

Is Balloonz the bat joining you for breakfast @Furries ?

He didn’t make an appearance for dinner, a midnight feast or breakfast.

Am a bit gutted as a) he was cute and b) I wanted to witness his break for freedom so that I know he’s ok.

Am really hoping that he found a small gap to somehow make his own way out the prior night. Will call the bat helpline again to update them and ask their opinion.

Is it possible that your bat got out without you seeing it go, OP? Bats can be so quick and silent, they can pass in the blink of an eye.

We have bats and an annual nursery in our roof space, going back decades to my knowledge and possibly hundreds of years. We have bats flying around outside each night and have had to help ill and injured bats over the years. A 'bat hospital' was one of the sweetest things I have ever seen. We love them, especially as they eat thousands of bitey midges and mosquitoes every night. This year's young should be being born around about now.

For those interested, here is the Bat Conservation Trust website with lots of photos and information, including a national helpline and local groups:
www.bats.org.uk/
Adoption includes a cuddly toy bat:
www.bats.org.uk/support-bats/adopt-a-bat

Good luck with your bat, OP!

I am very jealous of those who have bats visiting their gardens/have roosts etc. We used to see them at our old house flitting about in the evening. Not so much here. I miss them.

My Sister in Law adopted me a bat for my birthday. His name is Lil Drac and he is absolutely precious. Look it his little face!!

How does one 'adopt a Bat' please?! 🦇

DeadButDelicious · 08/06/2022 21:44

@SlatsandFlaps They did it through the Bat World Sanctuary.

I may have also adopted a bat through the Bat Conservation Trust this afternoon as well. 😶😁🦇

But what will Hugo be short for?
