We've just picked up our new kittens!

We've just picked up our two new kittens. We've named them Polly and Daisy. They just look so tiny! They're 11 weeks.

I totally gutted the house (it's baby proofed anyway due to DD) moved any wires and they've found a comfy spot together under the sofa where they currently are asleep.

I've got 3 litter boxes, 2 downstairs and 1 upstairs. Set out their food bowls each and water.

Does anyone have any tips? We thought long and hard about pets and we finally felt ready. They're sisters and I didn't want to separate them. We got them from a local adoption centre and they came together so we took them together.

If anyone has any words of wisdom or tips please let me know! They are so adorable.

When we go to bed do we just leave them be? I have bought cat beds but didn't know where to put them. Any tips please thank you!

Nothing like a cute kitten photo to look at. She's lovely and very similar to one of mine at the same age. Don't forget one of Polly when possible!

If you've already got cat beds, see if they use them. Otherwise I wouldn't bother - they'll find areas of their own - your settee, chair, mat by front door or cat flap, top of a box, corner of bedroom, bathroom mat etc etc.

It's a good idea to have a water bowl away from their food, apparently they don't like the two together. I didn't really take this on board with my last two, but I have two bowls for my present two. One is in same room as cat food, but it's the other they use most often.

Play wise, small soft balls, even ping pong balls go down well. As they grow older, one of them might like a kick-a-roo occasionally. If you get a delivery in a cat sized box, don't forget to leave it out for a few hours so they can have fun investigating.

My first two were young like yours and happily stayed in their room. My present two were 15 weeks, managed to blackmail them into room at night with food but once let out in the morning, they were like bombs - a nightmare at the time, but happy memories now.

Obviously as they and your DD grow up, teach her to let them have their own space and the fact there are times when they need to be left alone. My DD pushed her luck more than once, which resulted in a swipe - but she never did it again.

Best tip of all - love and enjoy.

Zippidy123 · 07/06/2022 08:37

Ah she's lovely, congratulations!

My advice is not to panic when they first start going out, it's really nerve wracking when they don't come home for the first time but they'll be fine and they'll slope in with not a care in the world the next morning!

They might stop using the litter trays once they start going out. Ours don't use theirs anymore, we still keep one out for them but they just won't go in it.

Definitely get a cat flap that reads their chips or you'll have tom cats coming in a spraying.

They might start fighting when they're older just make sure they've got their own space.

If you've got a shed consider putting a cat flap into it. Our boy loves the shed, it's his favourite place especially in the summer when it gets nice and warm in there.

I'd also shut them in a particular room at night, start now and they might like the routine of it. Cats can be annoying, pouncing on your head at 2am.

Well the first night was great!

They slept on the sofa together. They're running around with each other they're like ying and yang!
I've moved their water bowl so it's separate from feeding bowls (thank you PP)

One of them fell asleep on my lap this morning too. They're are so lovely. They keep karate jumping through the air at each other. So happy we've got these two little loves!

Is one bigger than the other or is it just the camera angle ?

Polly is slightly bigger than Daisy but only by a tiny bit. Mostly camera angle. They look so much bigger in the photos they are diddy little things!

Polly has the link collar and Daisy has the lilac. (Sorry for all the spam)

Beautiful x

I know this is dogs and not cats but it's a great approach for you with your toddler as well. A toddler can easily hurt a kitten accidentally.

They are very very cute 😍

ifonly4 · 07/06/2022 11:53

They're beautiful, you're making me broodly for more myself. We've had three black and white cats with faces similar to yours, so lovely to see the photos.

Oh yes, forgot to mention earlier if a cats on your lap, you can't move. If on the washing, you can't iron and on your bed, you can't make it or hoover!!

jessicaemily · 07/06/2022 12:02

My tip...don't panic if they run up you. It bloody hurts but doesn't last forever.

I felt like I was entertaining a toddler at times! They're so gorgeous though. Enjoy 💕💕

We have had cats a number of years and currently have 4. Obviously what is possible in your house may not work with what we do. We shut our cats in the kitchen at night but they have access to food and water in the utility room. We have a cat flap out of the utility room. When we first had cats as kittens we used one litter tray in the utility room. We moved it as close to the back door as possible and locked the cat flap. As they got older we slowly put the litter tray out side with the door open. Eventually we removed the tray altogether and the cats went outside. We do not let the cats have the run of the house while we are asleep. The amount of dead animals I have cleaned up over the years make me very happy about this!

MermaidEyes · 07/06/2022 12:23

Twinnies! So cute! Making me want another cat now, one of ours sadly died a while back and I think the other one needs a playmate (or maybe that's just me 😁). My cats have always been kept overnight in the kitchen, we have food, water, litter tray, cat beds and a sofa so they want for nothing. Looks like yours are settling in beautifully. Enjoy the new additions to your family!

One of the best tips I had when we got our kittens (also tiny 11 week old sisters!) was to play with their feet/toe beans early on to get them used to the feeling and it makes clipping their claws easier. Mine are 10 now and they've always been really calm about claw clipping time

had cats for the best part of 40 + years. Never had to clip any claws.

I’ve clipped all of mine. I had one that used to ambush you and dig his claws into your legs. He was only playing but it bloody hurt :)

pointythings · 07/06/2022 12:38

They're adorable! I have four - all rescues, got the first two as adults and they both hid, so I let them be. The second two are brothers, were 5 months when I got them and we kept them in one room and did scent swapping/gradual introductions. They all now have the run of the house but mostly sleep in the living room. I sometimes let them in my room in the morning, but only if I'm already awake and happy to be a bouncy castle.

@frankie001 , they’re gorgeous. Colin the cat has to be the best name I’ve heard for a while!

Crunchymum · 07/06/2022 13:31

They're so sweet together.

To all the posters please feel free to show pics of your cats!

We have been waiting 18 months to be paired as tiny kittens that are for rescue are so hard to come by near I am.
I never knew how truly amazing cats are until I picked them up yesterday. So excited to become part of the world of cats!

They’re settling in well. We have 2 dogs so was worried but they are all fine! Boy dog has taken on baby sitting duty, and gets anxious when they are in different parts of the room! They’re currently fighting each other on the sofa. Cats not dogs!

alfagirl73 · 07/06/2022 14:27

Awwww congrats with your two gorgeous kittens! It's nice that you got two together - they generally adjust quicker/easier and feel more secure. I didn't get a chance to shut my two in a room or anything - they were off round the house immediately! Explored everywhere and made themselves at home. The first night they cuddled up together - after that, they set about taking over the house! I pretty much left them to it and allowed them to explore and get settled at their own pace.

As for tips - cardboard boxes are your friend! My two have no end of cat trees and beds and toys - but they always love a cardboard box! It's ultimately up to you where you want them going in the house etc. Mine have the run of the house but are indoor cats so they have several floors to run about. After about 3 months I treated myself to a litter robot - game changer!

My two have very definite personalities that have really come out and its so cute. One of mine is always just making sure I'm okay - little gentle paw taps - sometimes on my leg, sometimes on my head, sometimes on my face when I'm sleeping - he just checks on me - it's very sweet. People often assume cats are all the same - and they're not. They're really clever and full of personality.

With toys - sometimes when they're very little, some toys can seem too big or overwhelming. Or their interests might change over time - so don't assume because they're not into a particular toy that they'll never like it. My two's tastes have changed as they've grown.
