Rothenburg ob der Tauber?

People rave about this place
We found it far too touristy and there are plenty of other beautiful places that aren’t as busy

Twila1 · 04/06/2022 11:41

I agree. It just fitted their description of “that town... all timbered houses and medieval looking.”

Enko · 04/06/2022 11:43

I really want to do one of the trips that takes you through their many castles. Some of them are stunning

fluffiphlox · 04/06/2022 11:44

Munich is great all year round.

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 04/06/2022 11:46

YES! Germany is fantastic. I lived there for 2 years. The scenery is outstanding, I particularly loved Hameln as in the pied piper of hemeln - and the surrounding countryside. It was just magical.
There is a long fairy tale trail there and the museum is lovely.

The islands are worth a visit. Rugen is the east and the largest German island. It was part of ‘east Germany’.
Nordeney in west as part of the Frisian islands.
Both lovely.

DH and I had a great weekend in Munich as part of our honeymoon.
We’re taking our 8yo there for October half term. There’s so much to do.

The area around Lake Constance is pretty and good for cycling. There’s nothing like a German lake beach.

I spent my 3rd year of university in Swabia. This thread has reminded me that I need to go back to Germany more.

I don't think so, because that name isn't familiar. The place I was in was, I think, not too far from Lahr (also lovely) and in the Black Forest.

I went on several coach holidays (very cheap, we were poor!) The hotels we stayed in were something else as well: timbered and painted fronts, beams, lots of woodiness, huge beds, bar in the cellar... this was in the eighties, though, they've probably all been taken over by chains!

I’ve been to Hamburg and Berlin. Thoroughly enjoyed both.

DriveInSaturday · 04/06/2022 16:30

If you are going this summer, there is a current offer of unlimited travel on local trains for a month for 9 euros. You might not fancy it after yesterday's news. So you could base yourself in a major city and visit places nearby as day trips. You can't use

DriveInSaturday · 04/06/2022 16:31

Posted too soon.

You can't use it on intercity trains. I'll add a link in a few minutes.

DriveInSaturday · 04/06/2022 16:35

Here's the link.9 euro tickets

We've had many fab holidays in Germany. Lake Constance (Bodensee) is amazing, especially the many thermal baths/pools. Easily accessible from Zurich or Basel, so you can get a bit of Switzerland too.
We have been visiting since the late 90s & English is now a bit more widely spoken than it used to be.
Very good public transport for getting around the lake - and boats, of course!

Bavaria, Munich, Heidelberg, Berlin also all excellent.

slippysept · 04/06/2022 21:50

I've just come back from Freiburg. Very pretty. Xmas market is supposed to be good. Very walkable.

Not sure if the scheme will be extended but at the moment you can buy a 9 euro tram/train ticket which you can use to get around for an entire month. Really affordable public transport (you can't use it on fast IC trains though).

Be aware that if you are a non EU passport holder, getting through passport control to come back home takes forever. We arrived at Frankfurt airport at 1pm for a 5:30pm flight back to the UK. We eventually got through baggage drop/security/passport control with only 45 minutes spare. Factor that in to your time plans.

Just a note - very difficult for vegetarians or people who don't eat pork. Yes there are vegetarian restaurants but we eat meat, dd doesn't and many normal (meat) restaurants do not have a vegetarian option, even the fried potatoes and macaroni were cooked in/with pork fat. She lived on baked potatoes and veggie burgers (which often had freezer burn)

I'd say it's not really the case anymore, yes, lots of pork, but we live in Germany and my DS is veggie and we have no problems eating out at places which suit us all.

MidwichCuckoo · 08/06/2022 17:52

I'd love to. I've only been on a school trip there. I continued French much longer than German and studied in France for a year, but I've recently got it into my head that I'd like to have tried living in Germany. My grandmother worked there for a year or so as a young woman and my grandparents had lifelong German friends that would visit.

Leftbutcameback · 01/07/2022 15:19

Just back from a week in Austria (so not quite Germany!) but wanted to report back - it was so beautiful and we had a great time. Lovely food and lots to do. This is our view from hotel garden

Would you ever fancy Germany for a holiday ?
waterlego · 01/07/2022 15:30

We’ve had several family holidays in southern Germany with our caravan, staying near Freiburg. I absolutely love the landscape (sunflowers, forests, rivers and vineyards), the architecture, the weather, the people and the food and would recommend that area to anyone. There is also an excellent theme park called Europa near Strasbourg which is cheaper and quieter than Disney and- according to my kids- better.

ATrifleofFun · 01/07/2022 15:53

Had a fabulous weekend in Dusseldorf and Cologne a few years back. Lots to do and see, Dusseldorf shopping is amazing and Cologne has a chocolate museum that makes Cadbury look sad.

Oldraver · 01/07/2022 17:26

Yes I would love it, no sandy beaches lots of lovely scenary, castles etc

Summerwhereareyou · 01/07/2022 17:37

@Leftbutcameback
Where abouts is that please

SnowWhitesSM · 01/07/2022 17:39

I really want to go for Christmas there! I love the sound of the Black forest and the castles.

Leftbutcameback · 01/07/2022 17:42

@Summerwhereareyou we stayed at Lake Achensee which is about an hour outside Innsbruck - we were in a village called Pertisau. I'm missing it today!

Heytheredeliah · 01/07/2022 17:42

I haven't been to Germany yet, but I would definitely consider it for a holiday. I would love to visit Dusseldorf or Cologne Bonn
