Shameless follow.

Depending on your interests, cities such as Dresden, Leizip and Weimar are well worth a visit.

Alps and Allgäu are brilliant for hiking or skiing.

Cycling along the Donau.

Passau, Regensburg, Ulm, Augsburg have great Xmas markets.

Nuremberg has the most famous Xmas Market, but most big towns have lovely ones too.

I agree that Düsseldorf is not that great as a tourist.

Agree with all suggestions above. Such a varied country and great climate.

Hamburg’s a great destination too, especially if you go when the Dom (huge traditional funfair) is on (3 times a year). Lovely walks round the old town and the two massive lakes, and the dock area in particular is great for bars, food and music venues. Miniature Wunderland for families. Also close to Lubeck for marzipan lovers.

Brilliant country - so much going for it and further south you go weather can be very good in summer - we've had 42 degrees in Munich and Stuttgart - Berlin is a great hipster city - as is Hamburg -- Rhine valley is gorgeous and there are some extremely good Eurocamp style sites- it's also in my opinion cheaper than Uk

We had a brilliant holiday at Lake Constance a few years ago, with a couple of days in the Black Forest. Seriously, so good. Just don't expect everyone to speak English (and I only met one other Brit family all holiday long) and know a few German phrases and you will have a wonderful time.

MrsDamonSalvatore · 03/06/2022 23:55

I wholeheartedly agree with previous posters that there are so many fantastic places to visit in Germany. Black Forest, Bavaria, Moselle Valley, historic cities, picturesque villages, snow capped mountains, all stunning. This thread is making me want to plan another trip!

Germany - fantastic hols. Prepare to put on weight - but also get fitter!

Volterra · 04/06/2022 00:04

I have German family and haven’t been able to get over since 2019, serious withdrawal symptoms.

Sswhinesthebest · 04/06/2022 00:09

Wonderful holiday touring round southern germany. So beautiful.

stayathomer · 04/06/2022 00:11

My best holiday was in Germany-fab food, great people, shockingly stunning scenery. We stayed at a hostel … but it was a castle really. Blew me away!!!

Sswhinesthebest · 04/06/2022 00:12

Also been to a German centre parcs which was ace. Several city breaks too.

Hawkins001 · 04/06/2022 00:13

Regardless of history, and politics, every country has various historical places of intrigue.

ThreeLocusts · 04/06/2022 00:36

German citizen here. The most famous Xmas Market is in Nuremberg. If you go there, don't miss the main churches, St Lirenz and St Sebald, either. They're stuffed full of beautiful wood carvings of a kind that that Cromwell and his troops mostly eradicated in the UK. There is also an exhibition explaining the city's role under Nazi rule, when it hosted the party congresses. And: eat Elisenlebkuchen. And Bratwurst.

Nuremberg is a long way though, whereas Cologne is about two hours from Brussels main station by the fast train, has an impressive cathedral, the Rhine, and by all accounts also a nice Xmas market. Local beer, called Koelsch, is the thinnest in the country and served in rather smaller portions than in Bavaria. Oh, and there is a chocolate museum, as well as good contemporary art collections.

ThreeLocusts · 04/06/2022 00:37

Lorenz, sorry, not Lirenz.

Anoooshka · 04/06/2022 00:44

Our best ever summer holiday when we were kids was the Black Forest. We drove down from London and camped at a Eurocamp site. It didn't rain at all (looking at you, France) and we went to Europa Park too. We did a day trip to Switzerland from there, as I recall.

I lived in Germany a few years ago with my family in the same area, and it was just as good. DS even went to school there.

Fidodidit · 04/06/2022 00:47

Absolutely loved Berlin when we visited pre-DCs. Since then have camped in the Black Forest and it was great. Massive snails at camp site, sausages of all varieties, SO HOT (40+ degrees), public swimming pools which served beer, Playmobil Land and a “bare foot” park which took us over terrain which ranged from normal woodland walking paths (where we’d have been wearing “sensible” footwear if in the UK) to lightly tumbled glass chips. Happy days.

It's been years since I spent proper time in Germany - bar one day in Hamburg spent at Miniature Wunderland on a cruise stop off.

I visited a bit when I was younger and stayed in the most beautiful places. I remember staying two nights in a small town somewhere, the name of which escapes me, but we arrived when it was getting dark, we were exhausted and it looked so beautiful and unreal I thought I'd just landed in a Grimm's fairy tale and started crying; and I never cry at anything!
I wish I could remember the name of that town... all timbered houses and medieval looking.

Leim · 04/06/2022 03:58

Never really on my bucket list but after reading all comments maybe it should be on my list.

Rothenburg ob der Tauber?

ifonly4 · 04/06/2022 07:49

I've visited Bavaria on a day trip, it's stunning. Also, Berlin and Hamburg. DD currently on a year abroad with uni in Germany, she's living in a lovely town, full of character, cafes, restaurants - it's not a tourist town, but has a real vibe. She visited seven european cities in her life and Berlin is her favourite (keeps going back as not too far away) - this is over Amsterdam, Budapest and the beautiful views of Nice.

balalake · 04/06/2022 07:50

Have done many times, Berlin a unique and interesting place, Bavaria beautiful.

Brokenseas · 04/06/2022 08:25

Thank you for the Landal recommendation converseandjeans! We have yet to take DCs abroad and I've been looking for accommodation like that as a starting point. They look lovely.

Have always wanted to go back to Germany since a very happy trip to the Erlangen beer festival years ago.

motogirl · 04/06/2022 08:55

It's lovely, been several times. Black Forest and a trip to europa parc is highly recommended or Bavaria is good for a few days (do a road trip!)

motogirl · 04/06/2022 08:59

Just a note - very difficult for vegetarians or people who don't eat pork. Yes there are vegetarian restaurants but we eat meat, dd doesn't and many normal (meat) restaurants do not have a vegetarian option, even the fried potatoes and macaroni were cooked in/with pork fat. She lived on baked potatoes and veggie burgers (which often had freezer burn)

Volterra · 04/06/2022 08:59

Landal are good though we haven’t used one in Germany. We had a great holiday on a farm when the DC were little, quite a few Ferienhof around.
