Hi
I'm looking for some non campsite (wild) camping places near Rhayder / Elan valley where I could park up my camper van overnight. Its really small , not much larger than an estate car.

Car parks , lay by, etc

Happy to pay for parking.

Any ideas much as appreciated.
Thanks

If you are happy to pay, why not go on the wild campsite? The only place you can legally wild camp in the U.K. is actually Scotland!

Possibly because that campsite appears to be tents only and the OP has a campervan?

Thanks for the link , I realise it's not actually "allowed" to sleep overnight in a vehicle in England (unless you are a lorry driver) but that aside , if I "happen" to fall asleep in my camper van where , near , Rhayder might be a good place 😁

Oh right, okay, let me see if I can drop a pin in a map for you, hang on.

Head up the old Aberystwyth mountain road. Tons of places.

it’s rhayAder for the win…

Wren77 · 02/06/2022 18:52

The search for sites app is really good for this sort of thing! Stick an area in the search bar and it will give you all kinds of options - lay-bys/ carparks - and you can wild camp in some spots! You get reviews too from other campers - helpful to know if the layby is used by.... others

Rhayadr (or Rhaeadr) is in Wales, not England.

FlibbertyGiblets · 02/06/2022 18:59

There is a small car park adjacent to the Elan bridge on the way through the mountains (vague)

Yep there are a few decent sized pull-ins (not passing places, not advocating parking up in a passing place)

exexpat · 02/06/2022 19:06

Caban Coch car park? It's a free car park just up from the Elan Valley visitor centre, so quite handy for the loos in the morning, but not the paid car park which might ban overnight parking (I'm not sure).

Nothingiseverything · 02/06/2022 19:08

Have you a working toilet?

ShadowoftheFall · 02/06/2022 19:15

Yeah, why not. Post it here and we’ll all turn up for a big p-aaa-r-t-aaay! I’ll bring Buckfast, weed and a really loud speaker. I’ve got a banging playlist on my phone, and in the morning we can skinny dip in the nearest pond! Yay!

Well that's fine then, because you'll be in Wales, not England.

SpinningCat2 · 02/06/2022 19:34

Apologies for the "England" reference and the misspelling.

Thanks for the links / ideas etc.

I do have my own toilet, fully self contained , can keep any waste water from the sink in side etc.

Shitty tourism
contribute nothing and expect others to find your tourism

just pay for a site Contribute to the local economy and don’t be a burden on those locally who pay taxes

I have choices ,

Limited funds

Go to the area , limit my spending on the campsite and have money to spend in several of the local cafes / tourist spots etc spread it around a few of the local businesses.

Or

Can't afford to camp AND actually visit anything in the area so, stay home, and spend my money there.

Aka , not "shitty tourism"

Actually there are quite a number of initiatives around this country and Scotland where overnight parking is allowed/ actively encouraged to bring tourism. The national trust have just started to join in too! Usually, but not always, a nominal fee is charged.

MartinReubyUnsungHero · 02/06/2022 22:45

If I had a drive big enough you could stay at mine but I don't sadly. I know a couple of people who live in Rhayader but the town itself is really tight so you can't park up unobtrusively there.

There is a car park by the dams about half way up (not the main visitor centre one). Not sure if they'd check there.

Some people recently stayed overnight in a car park in Brecon and the locals started a Facebook post about them and tracked them down and demanded they apologise so be warned. Curtains twitch even in the middle of nowhere.

SpinningCat2 · 02/06/2022 22:48

Thanks so much for all the ideas, I'll keep looking.

Apparently the wardens at the Elan Valley Trust are hot on people parking up overnight so the Elan Valley might not be a good idea. There is loads of space in mid Wales though where you could go unnoticed.

I wouldn't have thought a campsite for the night would be that expensive though would it?

taybert · 03/06/2022 12:56

Unfortunately a campsite for a night can be more than you would think nowadays- a lot of sites have upgraded a lot, put in Glamping units and won’t allow one night stays at a weekend which pushes prices up a lot. We don’t wild camp but I can see why people do when they’re self contained and don’t want to pay for bells and whistles they won’t use. Are you a member of briststops OP? Worth a look for a night.

Themusicis0utside · 03/06/2022 13:01

Hi, I work in the area and camping/overnight stays are not permitted anywhere on the Elan Estate.
