Things you've forgotten to take on holiday

We bundled DD up in the car at 3am, successfully got her back off to sleep. It's now 6am and we're half way into our journey. I've just realised we've only bloody forgotten DD's shoes.

We're in the UK and can buy some but I can't believe we overlooked them completely.

Anyone else forgotten something so obvious?

I once forgot to pack a refill gas cell for my heated hairbrush, and remember panicking when the one I had ran out, and unsuccessfully trawling the streets of Argostoli on Kefalonia, with now dh in tow, searching for a shop which might stock one. It really mattered to me then (30 years ago), probably still would, tbf!

FlySwimmer · 02/06/2022 09:52

Forgot my bras once! They were in a smaller packing cube to the rest of my underwear for some reason. Had to make a dash to M&S. If it had been a short trip I would have coped, but it was 3+ weeks, so…

drspouse · 02/06/2022 10:01

Just had to go back for DS teddies.
My whole bag (canal holiday, got a full wardrobe at Asda, but contact lens solution was harder).
Overnight bag with all my and the DCs wash stuff and pyjamas (but we'd all taken spares, only at the bottom of the case).
DCs tablets (Tesco to the rescue that time with new books and craft stuff).
Pyjamas often.

My husband and daughter are away visiting his parents (I stayed to mind the cat). They forgot her hairbrush, bobbles and the charger for the Switch.

I remember on more than one occasion we forgot to pack a corkscrew, back in the days before screw top wine was commonplace, and ended up having to buy an overpriced shit one in a tourist shop because we couldn't find one in the supermarkets.

And the part of my brain that remembers contact lens cleaning fluid seems to be missing as I always, always forget it.

Hadenoughofbloodycovid · 02/06/2022 10:15

At the departure lounge on the way to Egypt my husband remembered he hadn’t packed any shirts (dress code for evening meals at hotel).
spent the first day traipsing round the souk in boiling temperatures looking for bloody shirts!

Ribb · 02/06/2022 10:22

@SunThroughTheCloudsAt6am
Im in Portugal now and did the same! As well as numerous other things. In my defence, life's a bit hectic atm!
The resort shop sold one though luckily.

SundayTeatime · 02/06/2022 10:22

My friend left her driving licence - particularly unfortunate, as she had to pick up a hire car at the airport abroad.

NoToLandfill · 02/06/2022 10:39

Omg I love the idea of a master list in Excel and sort for the type of trip. Why didn't I think of that! Love it, will set that up

BFPDec21 · 02/06/2022 11:01

I did do a list and everything else is here. Somehow, I overlooked the fact that DD wouldn't have shoes on and expected everyone to have theirs on their feet. Thankfully, I found a pair of swim shoes in the boot which will have to do for our short stay.

Got to say, I've never forgotten Kevin or a baby so I'm not doing to bad!

When we did our very first trip with DD as a baby, we did forget to pack nappies though.

Son forgot to put on his coat and shoes (so arrived with no coat or shoes) and the suitcase with Xbox in. After deciding that his holiday happiness was more important than the experience meals out DH and I had planned we bought a new Xbox. Can't remember about the coat and shoes.

BlueThursday · 02/06/2022 11:36

we were approaching Amsterdam airport by train when our friends realised they’d left their passports in the hotel safe in Utrecht.

we had the hotel put them in a taxi to meet us at the airport as it would have been quicker than going back

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 02/06/2022 11:39

I once got a panicky call from DH at work as he had forgotten his passport and travel permit and the bus to the airport left in 40mins.

I was in the supermarket, just bu get what I had through the till, drove home found the stuff and drove to his office, making it with minutes to spare.

spiderlight · 02/06/2022 11:42

Toothbrushes and toothpaste! We discovered this at bedtime on the night we arrived. Grim.

On the same trip, we got to the bottom of the mountain we had to walk up and I handed DS his walking boots, at which point we discovered that I had packed one right boot that fitted him and another right boot from the previous year's (identical) pair that was a size too small.

goodplanbatman · 02/06/2022 11:45

Pants for my DS. On a cruise. Nowhere to nip and buy any so had to make use of the laundry every other day!

SommerTen · 02/06/2022 11:50

Epilepsy medication- luckily I was in Lanzarote near a clinic with a dr who spoke English & the pharmacies do actually stock the drug I needed.
That episode cost me £110!!

StrawberryLipstickStateOfMind1 · 02/06/2022 12:00

Meds and my phone charging cable the other week.
I managed the charger thing, but felt extremely weird when I got home the following day having not taken my meds.

A coat when going to Skye, it was bloody freezing and I ended up wearing my pj's under my other to keep warm.

Karatema · 02/06/2022 12:22

We forgot our currency, cash and travellers cheques (before CCards became widely used). Luckily, my s-i-l worked for a bank and had currency sent to a local bank for us. We had 2 days not able to spend any money (weekend)!

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 02/06/2022 12:29

We managed to leave behind all the toys I'd packed for ds1, when we were going to visit my parents. I had put them in the front room and shut the door - so he couldn't unpack them as fast as I packed them - and both dh and I forgot about them. We bought him some toys in a charity shop near my parents, and mum found a load of empty plantpots, which he had a lovely time with.

After that, I took to making lists of everything I needed to pack - and one year, I carefully wrote T-shirts on dh's list, and then equally carefully forgot to pack any! It's just as well supermarkets sell cheapy t-shirts.

I have forgotten DS coat. My phone charger and universal plug, left home in same bag. I've forgotten Euros before but had debit card so not an issue. I once forgot my Thyroxine medication when I was in France for 6 weeks but my son sent it through post to me.

DialsMavis · 02/06/2022 13:51

DDs swimming stuff, she went to Turkey with none a few years ago and had to buy her 2 hideously tacky bikinis for about 25p that would never have been allowed other wise, she loved them so much.

We recently went on holiday again and had a good laugh about it and packed ample cossies this time. Mid holiday we went away to an island for a few days, she didnt pack anything at all to swim in. Had to spend nearly 50 quid on the only swimwear on the island that was age 11, again she loves it so much.

satelliteheart · 02/06/2022 14:05

Once forgot my pjs, wouldn't normally have been a problem as I don't mind sleeping naked but it was a hen do and I was room sharing with someone I'd never met before so would have been really awkward. Also we were arriving at 11pm in an area with no late night supermarkets. Fortunately another girl in the group lent me some spare joggers and a vest top. I'd obviously only packed going out clothes/nice day clothes not at all practical for sleeping in

Dh recently forgot to pack spare underwear for a long weekend away. Luckily it was in UK so we nipped to Tesco to pick up a multipack of boxers. In the same holiday we very nearly forgot my entire suitcase. All bags and cases were in the hallway but the kids love playing with my small wheeled suitcase. I hadn't realised ds2 (2 years old) had wheeled it away and left it in the utility room. Fortunately did a final sweep to check all windows closed and spotted it

I now use lists for myself and the children (similar to pp, different lists saved for different types of holiday) but like the idea of adding a to do including each bag/case that needs to go in the car

Topseyt123 · 02/06/2022 14:22

DH often forgets to pack chargers and European adapters for his phone and other devices. Always wants to use mine, and always gets a firm "not until I have finished with them" back from me.

ILoveAllRainbowsx · 02/06/2022 14:42

TigerRag · 02/06/2022 07:25

I keep forgetting charging cables. Got so many that I've only used once!

@TigerRag

I just keep things like that in my suitcase permanently.

I also have a long list.
