I'm thinking of going down & wondering what time to arrive to bag a view. Any ideas?

Directly opposite the parade hound is blocked off to the press. Hundred of police. Sniffer dogs. 1 group of people at barriers just to the side

We're heading to the museums, best time to go as it will be empty with everyone at Buckingham Palace.

What about other area to visit?
Chelsea? Notting hill?

For the flypast?

Either would be fine, but of those two I'd choose Chelsea

That's because although they look as if the fly straight over the balcony, they're actually very fractionally to the south, and then keep going straight on, beginning the turns (to go back to their respective airfields) more or less over the Thames (less than a mile from the Palace). So that's pretty much directly over most of Chelsea

Mspw thank, I was thinking of atmosphere as well.

If we went to the mall would st James park be best tube?
Will everyone else be getting that tube?

SquirmOfEels · 02/06/2022 08:21

Check the TfL page for transport updates. There are planned closures of some tube stations (to avoid the entirely predictable overcrowding, by forcing people to fan out to other means) St James's Park is one of them, but looks like not today. There might be closures in addition to those if there's need.

Chelsea is looking very pretty at the moment, as 'Chelsea in Bloom' is still going on (lots of displays, most on shops, many featuring floral corgis) and there's bunting all over Sloane Square.

There's going to be a 'spot the corgi' trail round central London over the summer. I'll see if I can find the link again.

Westminster or st James.

It'll be very busy, so check with TfL to see if they have any crowd management measures in place. Might be worth getting the CityMapper app in case you need to devise new routes on the hoof.

Green Park station is also close, but you'll probably be stuck on N side of the Mall. Hyde Park Corner and Knightsbridge are also only an easy walk away.

Fizzgigg · 02/06/2022 08:34

Sounds like it's going to be busy! I lived in a flat about 3 min walk from Buckingham palace until last Dec (was there 16 years) and the flyover would go right over our balcony every year. It was awesome although frightened the crap out of my the first year as I wasn't expecting it and just heard the roar of the engines coming. Not going near the place today though.

Ithoughtsummerwascoming · 02/06/2022 08:48

Thank you👑

Ithoughtsummerwascoming · 02/06/2022 08:51

Which side of at James park should I head for ? Is there a pub or cafe for reference?

Ithoughtsummerwascoming · 02/06/2022 08:57

Maybe if we went to Piccadilly a s walked down from there?

SquirmOfEels · 02/06/2022 09:09

You wont be able to cross The Mall until its over, so from Piccadilly you'd end up on the north side of it (park is on the south side). If you want to be in the park then walking round the west side is probably the shorter route (down to Trafalgar Square, then along Whitehall to Parliament Square, then turn right on to Great George Street that becomes Birdcage Walk and goes all along the south side of the park.

You'll be able to get through Admiralty Arch from Trafalgar Square (probably) once the police start to re-open The Mall to pedestrians to let everyone get up towards the Palace
