Eh?? Sweet Caroline has been chosen as the song of the Jubilee?

I mean WTF?

Radio 2 listeners were polled and chose this old song (now associated with football and irresponsible gambling advertising on TV) as the song we're all supposed to sing to Elizabeth on her jubilee?

I should have put this in AIBU. AIBU to not be able to get my head round it? I find it embarrassing actually.

I don't mind the song, I hear it at the football regularly (where no one who sits around me and has done for years and years is drunk or racist, waves a flag or fights (though we do all shout, obv, as they do at any sporting event). Maybe the person who thinks football is like this should try going to a match!

I think it is wholly inappropriate though, 'good times never seemed so good' - WTF we are in appalling times and everything is a pile of shit!

No one knows the words apart from the Sweet Caroline BAH BAH BAAAAAHHHH bit.

We do at the cricket, where it is sung regularly Wink

No it isnt a weird view of the world, just a different one to yours. If you try hard, really hard, you can find a way of accepting that, it will reward you with an easier life and a new found level of emotional intelligence.

I don't accept ridiculous generalisations of any groups of people. My emotional intelligence has reached a level where I purposefully will challenge anyone who thinks that "Everyone who is ... {insert description of choice} ... must therefore be ...."
We call it racism, sexism, ageism in some cases, but the same principle applies to people on here saying "all boomers" "all MiLs" "all teens" "all HVs" "All GP Receptionists" etc etc etc.

So yes, perhaps weird is a subjective word, but "factually incorrect" for the majority of people that watch football would apply.

S0upertrooper · 01/06/2022 15:33

@the80sweregreat 3 lions is an English football anthem. England is not UK and as much as I'm happy for England to take financial resonsibility for her and her subjects, Elizabeth Winsor is not the Queen of England, she is the Queen of the UK.

Octomore · 01/06/2022 15:06

This may shock you, but LOTS of people have that view of football. It's really not uncommon or weird.

You're obviously a fan, but many people hate the culture that surrounds the game.

and LOTS of people have odd views about people who move to live in another country
LOTS of people have weird views about people who look different from themselves
LOTS of people have weird views about people whose sexual preferences are different from their own
etc
etc
etc
Which strikes me as all the more reason to point out that their judgements and generalisations are so often very wrong.

the80sweregreat · 01/06/2022 15:38

I wasn't writing about the Queen. I was just saying that the 3 lions song is on a banned list this year at the World Cup as someone had mentioned it.

midlifecrash · 01/06/2022 15:53

????
if they want people to sing along it should have been Come On Eileen

Mariposista · 01/06/2022 15:56

I think it's horrible. Why could they have written a new special one to mark the occasion.

Myworhl · 01/06/2022 16:01

IHateWasps · 01/06/2022 13:44

I'd prefer Black Betty.

😂😂

Witchofthedales · 01/06/2022 16:03

I hate that bloody song and am already sick of hearing it, it's everywhere! Absolute crap.

AuntieMarys · 01/06/2022 16:06

At least Elton John isn't rewriting I'm Still Standing....or is he????

CrunchyCarrot · 01/06/2022 16:11

"I'm Still Standing" would be perfect! I honestly don't get what Sweet Caroline has to do with anything. Bizarre choice.

Pegasaurus · 01/06/2022 16:17

Agree...v odd and crap choice. Not sure what I was expecting but not that.

TambourineOfRepentance · 01/06/2022 16:21

It's a definite improvement on God Save the Queen. Even if people are a bit foggy on the lyrics of Sweet Caroline, it has a discernible tune.

Handsnotwands · 01/06/2022 16:21

My DD (reportedly) has been learning the queen’s favourite song at school. Which is apparently “anything you can do I can do better” which seems kind of gloaty of her Maj given her unlimited budget and assistance

caringcarer · 01/06/2022 16:23

The Queen has her own song. God save the Queen. Sweet Carine is used at sporting events. I hear it at the cricket a lot.

FictionalCharacter · 01/06/2022 16:24

littlefirecar · 01/06/2022 14:49

Disgusting that they're taking a perfectly good sports song and attaching it to the queen

I have fond memories of this from the euros and past FA cup wins

Now its being tainted because the monarchy need to find yet another way to parasitically attach themselves to everything the British public enjoy

The monarchy didn’t choose it!

QuebecBagnet · 01/06/2022 16:26

I could understand it if her name was Caroline but it isn’t. Very odd.

FictionalCharacter · 01/06/2022 16:27

Wtf does that (shite, overplayed) song have to do with the Queen, the jubilee or the UK? Radio 2 listeners voted for it, really?!

TargusEasting · 01/06/2022 16:28

I am not sure what the fuss is about. It's just a low number of listeners voting on a radio station. It's not an official appointment or has been passed by an Act of Parliament.

noirchatsdeux · 01/06/2022 16:36

A piece of fucking shit I've hated all my life.

So quite fitting for the fucking Queen, as far as I'm concerned.

balalake · 01/06/2022 16:41

It does not say much for the listeners of Radio 2.

diamondpony80 · 01/06/2022 16:42

That song just reminds me of drunken nights out. Because of that it seems inappropriate to me.

ColadhSamh · 01/06/2022 16:43

Smartsub · 01/06/2022 14:01

I Googled. It's apparently been used by American Football fans since 1996 and in Association football since 2005. Interestingly it was first adopted by NI fans after they beat England!

Will it be sung with the sectarian 'add ons' used by NI football fans and others?

Antarcticant · 01/06/2022 16:46

It's totally irrelevant to the occasion.

It should at least have been a song originally written by a Commonwealth member. So many to choose from, and we pick that one.

On a personal level, I was never a fan of it and I got totally sick of it during the football tournament last year; with the aftermath of all the bookies adopting it for adverts.
