Eh?? Sweet Caroline has been chosen as the song of the Jubilee?

I mean WTF?

Radio 2 listeners were polled and chose this old song (now associated with football and irresponsible gambling advertising on TV) as the song we're all supposed to sing to Elizabeth on her jubilee?

I should have put this in AIBU. AIBU to not be able to get my head round it? I find it embarrassing actually.

Seriously! How odd. I associate it with football - so hooligan behaviour, drunk men shouting, fighting, flag waving, racists etc.

I’ m surprised! I live close to a rugby pub where this is always the last song played and assumed it had some king of rugby club connection.

Rugby clubs now sing it, but it was being sung at football first.

Smartsub · 01/06/2022 14:01

I Googled. It's apparently been used by American Football fans since 1996 and in Association football since 2005. Interestingly it was first adopted by NI fans after they beat England!

Kite22 · 01/06/2022 14:03
is the song written for the Jubilee. A competition ran across the Commonwealth - though I have to say this compilation doesn't sell it Grin
BlanketsBanned · 01/06/2022 14:09

Are they changing it to Sweet Lillibet. I have an earworm now.

Wow. I actually hate football, but I think this sweeping generalisation of football supporters is horrid.

AuntieMarys · 01/06/2022 14:12

ihatewasps 🤣

TheGetaway · 01/06/2022 14:13

I’ve never heard this song played without everyone joining in singing.

Great choice

DinosaursEatMan · 01/06/2022 14:13

It does seem an odd choice and one that I loathe the suggestion by a pp of a Queen song was genius!

CarlCarlson · 01/06/2022 14:16

Everything to do with the jubilee is pathetic/embarrassing little englander rubbish so this is apt

Wheelyweddingwipedout · 01/06/2022 14:18

RewildingAmbridge · 01/06/2022 13:55

Why does radio 2 get to decide? Surely it should be the national anthem or something by Queen

Yeah - Under Pressure would be a good choice on a couple of levels ……..

DinosaursEatMan · 01/06/2022 14:20

Or maybe I Want to Break Free?

DogsAndGin · 01/06/2022 14:21

Hate the song. Completely inappropriate for the jubilee

Wow. You have a weird view of the world.
I go to football every week - often 2 matches. This isn't my experience.

It's been sung at cricket matches for years

TheDogsMother · 01/06/2022 14:37

Weird choice and I am sick of hearing it already.

I live in a bit of a crappy place right now and that's exactly who will be fighting and pissed up this coming weekend. If I go anywhere it will be out of town.
Boris' government loves em, needs em, they probably want to go back to imperial measures too so keeping us properly British!

But it is a shit song isnt it? Poor Liz.

No it isnt a weird view of the world, just a different one to yours. If you try hard, really hard, you can find a way of accepting that, it will reward you with an easier life and a new found level of emotional intelligence.

Orangesox · 01/06/2022 14:44

My word what a shocking choice 😂Surely it should have been "Queen - Killer Queen"

littlefirecar · 01/06/2022 14:49

Disgusting that they're taking a perfectly good sports song and attaching it to the queen

I have fond memories of this from the euros and past FA cup wins

Now its being tainted because the monarchy need to find yet another way to parasitically attach themselves to everything the British public enjoy

FlibbertyGiblets · 01/06/2022 14:55

No one knows the words apart from the Sweet Caroline BAH BAH BAAAAAHHHH bit.

the80sweregreat · 01/06/2022 15:01

RewildingAmbridge · 01/06/2022 13:56

I also think Baddiel and Skinner's three lions is a more appropriate football song

Me too, but on lbc Nick Ferrari show a few weeks ago they said that this might be banned from this years World Cup !! I hope that any fans that go over to Qatar for the football sing it loud and proud and ignore any silly bans! It's one of the best England football songs ever and I hate football.

Octomore · 01/06/2022 15:01

This is why things like this should never be decided through a public vote*. It's a shit song.

Weird choice! I do like the song but it has nothing to do with anything. I do like the suggestion of Killer Queen though.

This may shock you, but LOTS of people have that view of football. It's really not uncommon or weird.

You're obviously a fan, but many people hate the culture that surrounds the game.
