Eh?? Sweet Caroline has been chosen as the song of the Jubilee?

I mean WTF?

Radio 2 listeners were polled and chose this old song (now associated with football and irresponsible gambling advertising on TV) as the song we're all supposed to sing to Elizabeth on her jubilee?

I should have put this in AIBU. AIBU to not be able to get my head round it? I find it embarrassing actually.

I heard that as I drove out this morning and assumed I had misheard something.

Cos that's just fucking weird!

orwellwasright · 01/06/2022 13:41

I can't bear Neil Diamond songs. Really set my misophonia off. Give me the rage.

Smartsub · 01/06/2022 13:42

I think rugby had it before football?

It's become a patriotic song....for some unfathomable reason.

ShaunaTheSheep · 01/06/2022 13:43

Bizarre.

StripeJacket · 01/06/2022 13:44

I didn't about the association, I don't like the song much and shall not be singing it.

IHateWasps · 01/06/2022 13:44

I'd prefer Black Betty.

A580Hojas · 01/06/2022 13:44

Yes, just fucking weird is exactly what I think! Wasn't it played endlessly during the men's football World Cup last year?

Yes it's truly weird. I saw a news segment about it, it was a popular football song (?) and now apparently we all love it. Very British and I'm sure the Queen loves it

ShippingNews · 01/06/2022 13:48

About as appropriate as Tom Çruise turning up at her horse conce

It was The Euros last year.

(Sorry for being that person.)

iklboo · 01/06/2022 13:50

It's ridiculous and was SO overplayed / sung that it's actually now grating to listen to.

ExtremelyDedicated · 01/06/2022 13:50

I have always liked it and even more so now it's associated with football, I'll sing along quite happily.

Love the song. Thought it a shame to use an American song to celebrate a unique British event. Have we nothing ourselves?

A580Hojas · 01/06/2022 13:53

And quite agree - Tom Cruise? so random!

Loobyloo68 · 01/06/2022 13:53

At least alot of people know it and will join in with the singing. I loved it when England played.

JangolinaPitt · 01/06/2022 13:54

I’ m surprised! I live close to a rugby pub where this is always the last song played and assumed it had some king of rugby club connection.

Floralnomad · 01/06/2022 13:54

It’s a boxing song to me , they play it before the main bout at most televised boxing events - can’t fathom what it’s got to do with the jubilee .

RewildingAmbridge · 01/06/2022 13:55

Why does radio 2 get to decide? Surely it should be the national anthem or something by Queen

StripeJacket · 01/06/2022 13:55

I don't think we are allowed to, we had to be inclusive of the Swiss and Italians when it came to trufle 🤣

RewildingAmbridge · 01/06/2022 13:56

I also think Baddiel and Skinner's three lions is a more appropriate football song

StripeJacket · 01/06/2022 13:56
