Intermittent rumbling in the house

Wonder if anyone can shed some light.

When I woke up yesterday morning, I could hear a very notable, intermittent rumbling sound throughout the house. At first, I put it down to next door snoring after a night shift.

It hasn't stopped for 24 hours. Partner confirmed last night that he could hear it too, so I know it isn't just me. It was really frustrating me and I struggled to get to sleep. Eventually I got up like a woman possessed, standing in various spots around the house, in my dressing gown, trying to find the source. No such luck, but I feel that it is louder in the bathroom, so I'm assuming it might be something to do with the pipes? I've no idea.

Partner is being quite blasé about this, but it's driving me nuts in case case it's something sinister. (I've also got pretty bad anxiety).

Any ideas?

Just to add, I can't feel or see any physical vibrations, even in the bathroom. So I don't even know if it is indeed our house making the noise. Clueless.

Wasps nest somewhere?

When I was a kid I could hear rumbling in my room, worse at night when it was quiet. I thought it was some evil demon...so did my dad for a few days. i remember him doing some woo stuff to try and "exorcise" the room😂

There was a nest in the wall...

Have you turned all your taps on?

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 31/05/2022 06:53

There is a phenomenon that some people experience...

... then again, it might be a giant bee stuck in your loft?

Horsemad · 31/05/2022 06:56

Is there gas piped to the house?

ParrotMug · 31/05/2022 07:01

Hadn't considered bees/wasps! Do they "hum" as intermittently as this? I genuinely thought it was next door snoring. It's as consistent as that!

Will have to wait for partner to get home from work to check out the loft. Royally buggered my ankle recently and don't want to risk doing any further damage as I'm on my own!

Is it bad to say I've no idea? It's my partner's house. Ex-council, mid terrace if that makes any difference. How would I go about finding this out?

Sounds like my Dad's dishwasher. It quietly rhythmically hums. I had no idea what it was at first.

fedup078 · 31/05/2022 07:06

Maybe it's something next door like some sort of machine they are using ?

Hot tub?

That was one of my thoughts. Clearly hear so much about the noise from them on MN! I've looked out the windows into neighbour gardens and can't see any new ones that have cropped up.

No dishwasher, so can't be that. Though I'd love the reason to be something as easy to source as this!

mineshaft underneath perhaps?

There was some drilling going on across the road during the day, think they're doing a bit of work inside the house. Though this noise started early hours of yesterday morning, so I don't think they're linked.

If it carries on I might pop round the neighbours and see if they're hearing the same thing. Don't want to unduly worry them if it's something we can sort.

Will give this a go! No harm in trying.

I had this one morning it woke me up it started at one end of the house and worked its way through scared the life out of me it sounded like something was in the walls like a rolling noise then a thud. Im assuming something rolled off the roof.
I hear noises in the kitchen everyday, it sounds like walking around upstairs like a vibrating noise but i have no neighbour next door and theres just me and my daughter in the house it happens when where in the same room.

Jeansgoals · 31/05/2022 07:19

Maybe neighbours are using a generator.

majorquimby · 31/05/2022 07:25

Hmm I was going to ask if you're menopausal as I often hear rumbling sounds that aren't there (and apparently this is fairly common as a symptom!) but if your partner can hear it too clearly not that.

Any factories close by? We have one on the edge of our estate and although we can't hear it where we are it's very audible a couple of streets away and one of our neighbours actually sold up and moved because of it. It wasn't all the time, just when they were doing certain things.

Undertheoldlindentree · 31/05/2022 07:26

Have your neighbours been running a dehumidifier to deal with damp or a washing machine flood? They can created a low hum/rumbling that travels through walls and floorboards.

Ducksinthebath · 31/05/2022 08:01

How can you not know if there’s a gas supply?! Is there a gas hob, can you see standard radiators, are there two meters?

I can't believe I even said that. Yes, there is a gas supply. Christ knows why, but I was thinking that something more elaborate was being suggested. I'm going to blame the lack of sleep.

Bees could be it. We had a neighbour make repeated noise complaints about us (and hammered on our door at 2am) when we lived in a flat, for a noise that could only be heard at night.

Turned out to be a bees nest in the bay window.

MargaretThursday · 31/05/2022 09:48

Have you gone outside to see if you can hear it? In our old house we used to get odd reflections of noise. For some reason the drain cleaner cleaning the drain next to the front of the house was quieter than the one a street away at the back.

swapcicles · 31/05/2022 09:55

Anything with a motor would make that kind of noise.
Recently I've notice the extractor fan (would explain the bathroom location) fish tank filter and wind creeping through a gap in the window.
Even a forgotten kids toy, hidden somewhere, lotso huggin bear creeped me out one night by whirring and moaning!!
