Intermittent rumbling in the house

Wonder if anyone can shed some light.

When I woke up yesterday morning, I could hear a very notable, intermittent rumbling sound throughout the house. At first, I put it down to next door snoring after a night shift.

It hasn't stopped for 24 hours. Partner confirmed last night that he could hear it too, so I know it isn't just me. It was really frustrating me and I struggled to get to sleep. Eventually I got up like a woman possessed, standing in various spots around the house, in my dressing gown, trying to find the source. No such luck, but I feel that it is louder in the bathroom, so I'm assuming it might be something to do with the pipes? I've no idea.

Partner is being quite blasé about this, but it's driving me nuts in case case it's something sinister. (I've also got pretty bad anxiety).

Any ideas?

Is your boiler near your bathroom? We recently had what sounded like a helicopter rumbling away overhead the whole time I was cleaning the bathroom, turns out the boiler was fecked.

Are you in Bristol?

We had a mysterious intermittent scraping noise years ago. Turned out to be an old tv aerial that had partially detached and was moving in the breeze, scraping against the chimney and making a huge racket in our room because the chimney went up through that wall.

If it's intermittent, just wondering if it's mice or rats (my Mum had rats in cavity walls and also loft - obviously they're not always active. If your DH checks the loft for wasps, might be worth checking everywhere for droppings in case they've got up there. If you're concerned it's an infestation of any time, try not to worry. My Mum paid for pest control to come out - the chat said it was a one off fee no matter how often he had to come out to eliminate the problem - it was easily sorted.

Update: still don't know what it is!

However, DP's been up the loft (which is tiny, empty and not used for anything), and it appears whatever the noise is, is most likely coming from next door. Waiting for them to get back to see if they know what's up.

Wasn’t there an earthquake in the UK yesterday, possibly aftershocks 😁

We had this and it was that next door had bought an exercise wheel for their cats! Big metal thing that has a low level rumble.
