As a plus size woman I have something controversial, potentially shameful to admit

I have slim muscular arms without a bingo wing in sight and i would never wear a cold shoulder top. I am sure they are very popular in Benidorm and Blackpool but they are not for me. I really do wish women's tops were a few inches longer, at 50+ with big boobs i don't want a crop top and neither do i want floral.

failing40s · 31/05/2022 08:30

You see a similar phenomenon in petite clothing. Not necessarily cold shoulders but other weird stuff that designers/buyers?? assume that you'll like just because you are short. TU is pretty bad for this - their petite tops often have "petite moi" on them?? Why?!? I'm 46 not 4!

amusedbush · 31/05/2022 08:32

You would all love chubbymermaids' content on TikTok, she has a long-running series of skits about plus sized fashion designers and it's all 100% spot on Grin

@Tibtab I actually just picked up a few of the basic tops in M&S at the weekend and they're surprisingly nice. I've always found their t-shirts to be too thin or too short but these are a good fabric, a decent length and, best of all, they have a rolled sleeve that flatters my (disproportionately fat for no discernible reason) upper arms without being a cap sleeve. The hem of the sleeve sits about 4" from my elbow, which I like; I usually buy mens t-shirts and just style them as "oversized" because I can't stand having my arms exposed.

I cross-posted with you in the most hilarious way - I'm so happy for you and your beautiful Michelle Obama-esque arms EnvyGrin

Are they being particularly pushed at plus sizes then?
All the shite gets pushed to plus size women. It’s absolutely tragic. I tried to buy some new clothes recently and couldn’t find a single decent thing. Everything adorned with flowers or butterflies, weird shaped clothing that looks like tents, horrible slogans on everything. I gave up.

CornishPorsche · 30/05/2022 23:54

Why can't they just make longline, plain black, fitted, deep V neck tops. That's all I want. Not oversize, not with a pocket on the boob, not a high neck, not a short body cut, not bloody floral.

Plain. Black. Fitted. Covers my belly. Deep V neck.

This!

This is true. I have decided this year that I am only going to wear cotton trousers and plain tshirts (Tesco has some really nice ones in blue and white. I avoid the horizontal stripes and that awful khaki colour that is everywhere).

LunaAndHerMoonDragons · 31/05/2022 08:37

I'm plus size, I don't like them, I didn't like them when I wasn't plus size either. My likes haven't changed. There seems to be general belief that plus size women aren't short with a flat chest. I don't have the breasts for most of the plus size clothes I like, can't fill the cups on bras that are long enough to fit around me and even the petite jeans are too long now I need them in larger sizes.

fruitbrewhaha · 31/05/2022 08:44

I hate the cold shoulder tops. Especially for kids clothes, they were everywhere. Why would I want to dress a seven year old in a top thats got "oooo look at my sexy top falling off" shoulders?

I do like a bold print though. Lots of colour.

IsabelHerna · 31/05/2022 08:45

As a plus-size pregnant woman, I like the cold shoulders too, because they allow me to breathe a bit BUT they cover my huge horrible arms

Oblomov22 · 31/05/2022 08:46

I had to look them up. I didn't even know they had a name.

Octopus47 · 31/05/2022 08:49

I love cold shoulder tops (runs away and hides). I've got a black one that I've had since I was 40 (I'm now 47) that I still wear loads.

This is the precise question I have been struggling to articulate all these years!!!

I sense a gap in the market here, quick! Someone please start a business!!!!

FlemCandango · 31/05/2022 08:50

I am size 18 and 5'8" - I have been known to alter cold shoulder dresses to turn them into a sane single wide strap. I alter things regularly now as I have a sewing machine e.g. have added pockets to a dress recently. My next project is working out how to adjust waistlines / or simply making dresses from scratch as most dress waistlines seem to circle my rib cage - I have a long body. I am ok with prints but prefer more eccentric styles (get cutie) or vintage. I have a large collection of band t-shirts - some of those have been altered as I don't like the high round necks and have sometimes created a cold shoulder affect with layering a vest underneath. But I think that is ok?

namechangeanonymous · 31/05/2022 08:59

God forbid you don't want 'core ranges' you will never be able to physically shop, maternity is like a dirty word, plus sized with exception of #bekind flowery sacks from yours can't really think of anywhere else to go and petite (THINK they get a bit easier a ride as can wear core but not in proportions needed)
I don't want to wear something shapeless that looks like it's ran out of its allocated fabric quota so missing bits in the arm/let's over reveal the boobs in this sack I want nicely shaped proportional clothing in nice colours/I do like a pattern but not a pineapple etc thank you.

Diplidocus4 · 31/05/2022 09:03

Cold shoulder tops were way before 2019 ?
I have a black t shirt with cold shoulders from Next that's at least 8/10 years old !

I don't wear it much these days .....

TheGonnagle · 31/05/2022 09:06

I would like a range of well cut, neutral coloured tops in a non ‘synthetic shit and shiny’ fabric.
I would like them to be the right length, not square so I look like a fucking square.
I would like necklines that don’t make me look like a ship coming in to dock. I’m looking at you, stupid round necks - give me a V!
I would like armholes that don’t reveal my bra.
I would like sleeves that stop near my hand, not half way down my arm and make me cold.
I would like clothes that recognise where my waist is. I’m tall as well as curvy, my waist isn’t immediately under my tits.
I don’t want to wear the shit on the high street.

Bah.

EggRollsForever · 31/05/2022 09:08

Always hated cold shoulders but love a Bardot top!

Yes, yes and yes again.

ssd · 31/05/2022 09:11

I didn't know what these were till i googled them. Ive seen them in asda but i can't imagine wearing one. Im short fat and booby and dont need any more attention drawn to that area, with the flappy sleeves and extra material.
Just no.

MedusasBadHairDay · 31/05/2022 09:13

Lesperance · 31/05/2022 07:13

Can somebody PLEASE explain what this has to do with being "plus size"?

I agree, they are really old fashioned now, didn't last long, it's all puffy sleeves now.

I suspect the prevalence of cold shoulder tops in plus size clothing is because they've realised we might want to feel a little cooler in summer, but that we absolutely aren't allowed to traumatise the general public with the sight of our fat arms, so they've compromised by allowing us to show our shoulders.

sadfacee · 31/05/2022 09:15

I find it really sad that people can't just wear what the fuck they want without other people - other women - judging them for it.

Just because something is unpopular or has had it's moment, or you or whoever the fuck else doesn't like it, can't we just support other women to be confident enough in themselves to wear whatever the fuck they like?

purplesequins · 31/05/2022 09:19

I bought by mistake a running shirt with cold shoulders.
why?
I've sown it shut, would hate to put it in landfill.

I think it’s human behaviour to judge when others wear or do something we don’t like. It doesn’t mean we’re taking it to the next level. Am I not allowed to dislike certain kinds of clothes? And at what point does my dislike become a judgment of the person wearing it?
