If you were at a party and, in making small talk with a randomer, asked them what they did for a living, and they came out with this before instantly changing the subject, what would you think that'd mean?

Works in a GUM clinic maybe. (If they are still called that).
I used to have people asking me for advice all the time. I would refer them to someone that could help them or give them my card if it was something I could help with and suggest they made an appointment.

I feel like if you work in sexual health you wouldn’t be embarrassed about saying what you do, you’re probably quite used to talking about sexual health.
And It’s not like other medical professions where people are going to show you their rashes (hopefully!).

But people get nosy about sexual health, so understandable not to want to discuss it when not at work.
