It's all part of the evil plan. They are creating a hideous system of socialism and state dependence, where even people who previously did not struggle will have to beg for handouts just to get by,

TBF, the Conservatives- and Rishi really is a true blue - aren’t famous for wanting state dependence - hence not uprating benefits and public sector pay or some other longer term measure.

What they want is not to be completely thrashed in the polls.

LesLavandes · 26/05/2022 18:21

I'm grateful to be getting the £400 and whatever you get, you should too be grateful. Mine will go directly to credit my energy account.

You should be pleased!

BluTangClan · 26/05/2022 18:21

They're giving you the money so you can pay them and their friends the money.
It's just another way of them getting their hands on public/more money and making sure the rich get richer, while looking like they're helping you.

Not benefit bashing but I think anything that is given to all pensioners (eg winter fuel allowance) ignores the fact there are some very rich old people around who don't need this ..

I know this thread is long, but this has been addressed many times. Means testing is incredibly expensive on admin costs and time. It's cheaper to give the payment to all pensioners.

Many of us who don't feel we need it, plan to somehow donate it to those who do. That will be more effective.

StupidUsernameUnavailable · 26/05/2022 18:22

@Youreatragedystartingtohappen

Snap. My SIL and BIL will get the £400 and £650. Lazy bastards who refuse to get off their arses and work and the vast majority of that will go up their noses or pay off their existing drug debt. I can tell you now it will not pay ANY bills. But they will see it as "Yay! Boris is the man he gives us lots of free money let's vote for him again"

(I know this is not reflective of all people in receipt of benefits)

Whereas DH and I both work full time, mortgage, 2 kids in wrap around. Never miss a bill yet struggling with the food shop each week. No holidays, no social life. Literally just bills.

We are not high earners, we are not low earners, yet somehow we, the people in the middle, the ones who are quite frankly just existing at the moment to pay their fucking bills that are the ones that are going to get squeezed the most (well, that's what it feels like anyways).

The UK government should have taken actions ages ago - these increases have been known about for a long time.

Last year when setting the benefits rises for the year they said that the inflation was a “blip” so moved away from their own triple lock system given people who rely on benefits a de facto income cut.

so all todays £650 is really is what those people should have had already, less for those who get disability benefits/pension but not the other benefits.

but announcing it like this helps add to the anti benefits attitude a lot better helping them.

BadWolf2022 · 26/05/2022 18:23

I'm happy with the support but I do think they should of stopped the £800 increase in energy bills! £400 doesn't quite cover it. Also think they needed to do more for pensioners on state pension.

worriedatthistime · 26/05/2022 18:24

@Catatemyhomework they are financing it by taxing the energy companies si if they put prices up and make more money they pay more tax in simple terms

Dementedswan · 26/05/2022 18:25

Off topic I know.... but how's the national insurance increase going to effect people receiving benefits? Will they no longer be entitled to full state pension because they no longer pay contributions?

worriedatthistime · 26/05/2022 18:25

@Maggiethecat you could always donate to food bank or another charity of not needed
It costs more to means test it all

Hipla · 26/05/2022 18:26

Extremely expensive way for the treasury to deflect from Boris and Partygate….they must be fuming.

My mum is 76 and gets AA.
Will she get both the £400 discount and £650?
I'm confused.

She will automatically get the £400 - everyone will.

The AA will qualify her for the £150 disability payment.

Assuming she already gets a Winter Fuel payment as a pensioner, she should also get the £300 payment for pensioners.

So that’s a total of £850.

IF she gets pension credit or housing benefit, she will also qualify for the low income payment of £650, making a total of £1500.

HTH.

RaspberryToo · 26/05/2022 18:26

@StupidUsernameUnavailable The 400 WILL pay bills because there is no other option available than it going to your utilities as it's paid by the utility companies and there only option is to credit your bills with it.

There are probably multiple reasons why your Brother and his partner are addicts; and there's currently zero fucking support in most parts of the UK for addicts who want to stop thanks to the horrendous battering that the NHS mental health services have taken with funding.

I really could not begrudge an addict / addicts.

And then when it comes time to claw back some of the money they can use that anti-benefits rhetoric to justify savage cuts to the most vulnerable.

worriedatthistime · 26/05/2022 18:27

@Franklin12 houses don't have to be over £500k to be in e tax band around here
My parents are retired they are band e they live in a 3 bed detached , nothing majorly special and its not worth £500 k
A 2 bed bungalow would cost a similar amount to their house
And selling and moving isn't cheap or easy when your older either

Sortilege · 26/05/2022 18:15

No but you did say “that can’t be right unless <very common thing or other very common thing>”.

It is wearying seeing so many people suffer under this system and then watching loads of people online cores scepticism.

Maybe you meant it slightly differently?

I did say that because it is true. It cannot be right unless rent is very high. I then went on to explain why and say if it is due to high rent pp should look at DHP. Stop picking holes where none exist.

Svara · 26/05/2022 18:28

anniegun · 26/05/2022 14:13

It definitely should not be pro-rata on your bill. That would mean millionaires in mansions would get more than a pensioner only heating one room

Agree it certainly shouldn't be pro rata. It'll be half our bill but with the cost of living increasing in general we still need it. Would be a kick in the teeth to do all we can to keep the bill down, minimal heating, two minute showers, to then get less help.

worriedatthistime · 26/05/2022 18:28

@RaspberryToo its not a wfh handout and its pennies and a pain to claim

Thats so helpful, thank you.
No she doesn't get pension credit.
She'll be relieved.
She feels the cold terribly (she is under 7 Stone atm)

Not every disabled person gets PIP. It's actually very hard to get.

UC is around £77 per week. But many are having to pay anything up to 20% council tax and the shortfall in rent.

The pp must be getting PIP (or equivalent depending on age) because her father is receiving carer’s allowance for caring for her, which you cannot get without receiving PIP (or equivalent).

worriedatthistime · 26/05/2022 18:29

@caringcarer won't many disabled be on UC thoigh so will get both and many carers will also be looking after someone who gets the payouts
It towards heating the home not extra cash per person
So if one person gets it that benefits all that live ther e

What they want is not to be completely thrashed in the polls.

I don't see any conservative values from the current lot. Conservatism is supposed to be about a small state, self sufficiency, and personal responsibility. But the covid lockdowns, including forced business closures and furlough, have shown that this lot are not conservatives. Rather, they are authoritarian socialists. Add in the commitment to Net-Zero carbon, and they are also radical green activists. I will never vote Green/Lib/Lab/Con again. I've seen them for what they really are. It's independents, fringe parties, reformist parties, and spoilt ballot papers for me from now on.

And I can't understand why people are getting so excited about these handouts. It's not free money, we're all going to pay for these handouts eventually. What we need is a coherent energy policy that gives us cheap energy, and independence from what happens elsewhere in the world.

worriedatthistime · 26/05/2022 18:32

@FlySwimmer so are many people who will get the £400 as well , many pensioners also scrape by or struggle but just above pension credit
My nan won't get as she had 2 private pensions that she paid in for , still pays tax
But yes her £1000 a month is too much and she shouldn't get anything else

Sortilege · 26/05/2022 18:34

PurpleButterflyWings · 26/05/2022 18:36

@Hrpuffnstuff1

Who the chuff is paying £2800 for energy. What the hell are people heating.🤔😂
We pay about £100 a month for electricity, and £35 a month for gas PAYG-4 story cottage. Family of 4, with partial work from home.

My room stat says it's 20.8c in winter the house never drops below 16c.

Hmm

Not sure what's so hilarious about peoples bills skyrocketing. LOADS have gone up to £2500 to £3000 a year. What an ignorant post.

A friend was telling me last night that her energy DD is now £900 a month, although it is a £2 million barn renovation.
