Why are people so quick to get angry, without checking?
@Sortilege

That's Mumsnet!

caringcarer · 26/05/2022 16:53

@franklin12, I live in a house valued at approximately £375k but band E and I did not get £150 either. Don't assume all band E houses are worth over £500k because they are not.

It just says 'disabled people' on the fact sheet so hopefully children will be eligible too.

Yes all I can see is “people” (getting PIP or DLA) or “individuals” (ditto).

It is worth keeping an eye on BBC & Guardian news coverage over the next two days, if you’re affected. They are usually the best two media outlets for getting the fine details of budgets etc clarified by the exchequer, and then explaining it to the rest of us.

I’m on universal credit and haven’t received anything or heard of anything like this ? I feel bad for working families who are worse off than me they should get
extra top ups .

RaspberryToo · 26/05/2022 16:54

@Threebutterflies it was only announced today...

BensonStabler · 26/05/2022 16:59

Oh Wow! That is great @SpittinKitten Smile

Thank you so much for letting me know that. I had been trying so hard to keep up with that but health problems got in the way.

great news. Flowers thanks again

Thank you @uncomfortablydumb53 [smlle]

RaspberryToo · 26/05/2022 17:03

@angieloumc PhDs don't usually stop for summer; is he still getting his stipend?

Wrongkindofovercoat · 26/05/2022 17:03

So the government is taking money off the energy companies, but at the same time allowing then to continue to increase prices and standing charges ?
Everyone then get's the £400 credited to their energy accounts ?
So instead of paying £2800 for energy, they then pay £2400 ? Which is still a heck of a lot more than most people were paying before the price cap rises ?
How much will this scheme cost to deliver ?

So the squeezed middle get little help then in comparison to the low paid or jobless. I get a bit annoyed by it tbh, we pay more tax now and get little to no assistance ever. We’re not eligible for anything at all, no FSM or help with uniform/school trips/school transport. Little help with childcare costs either. With this we’ll most likely be eligible for the lowest amount of help, it’s always the way.

Would you prefer to be low paid or jobless? Or maybe disabled?

caringcarer · 26/05/2022 17:06

I think I have read before that it costs so much money to means test a benefit like pension it works out cheaper to just give it to all of them. This is why they all get the winter heating allowance. It would be more expensive to means test with all admin involved.

BensonStabler · 26/05/2022 16:50

There are some people who resent the unemployed disabled so much, saying there are roles out for them?!

What would you suggest?

If their disability is so severe that they are entitled to these notoriously hard to get (meeting exacting stands with proof from Dr’s) then they are not fit for any type of work.

People like this would have people with paraplegia licking f*ing stamps!! ffs 🤦🏻‍♀️

I remember a discussion programme on this very subject a few years ago. Someone on the panel actually voiced the opinion that if Stephen Hawking could work, so could all other disabled people. He was jumped on and had it pointed out to him that Stephen Hawking had a team of people who met his needs so that the country could benefit from his intact intellect. We see a lot of people glibly suggesting that all disabled people are capable of ‘some work’ no matter how severe the disability, but issue is not whether someone with a severe disability could do a job of work, it’s more about how much help they would need to achieve that, who would provide it and how would it be paid for. Who helps them get ready for work, travel to work, and cope while they’re actually there ? Who helps them get changed after accidents if they’re incontinent - quite apart from the embarrassment this would cause ? I love it when people who have no disability and no experience of it try to tell those with a disability how to live.

So who gets UC on 43k?!

And since when is that "low to middling" 43k is not a low income..

Someone posted a few weeks back about getting uc on a salary of £40+ - just looked but can’t find the thread to post.

I didn’t get it either, and my house is worth around £400k (maybe I need to get my council tax band re-assessed).

I never usually agree with means testing- but I have single friends who’s yearly fuel bill is barely £600, so to think they basically get it paid whilst others sink is madness to me

Oh do fuck off with your single person prejudice.

Who the chuff is paying £2800 for energy. What the hell are people heating.🤔😂
We pay about £100 a month for electricity, and £35 a month for gas PAYG-4 story cottage.
Family of 4, with partial work from home.
My room stat says it's 20.8c in winter the house never drops below 16c.

A friend was telling me last night that her energy DD is now £900 a month, although it is a £2 million barn renovation.

MarmiteOnToast · 26/05/2022 17:15

What is classed as the lowest incomes? I think we may be border line

caringcarer · 26/05/2022 17:15

@purplebutyerglywings, with respect pensions may be biggest cost for DWP but those claiming pension now, paid into that pot for 35 years in most cases and many over 40 years worth of contributions. Pension is not a benefit. Those who have not paid in can't claim it. The money paid in now in taxes pays today's pensioners. The money they paid in paid for previous pensioners. Money to be paid in the future will go towards pensions of those working today. Not the same for those claiming benefits. Some have either never worked and paid tax or only worked for a few years and some have taken out far more than they have contributed and continue to do so. The two are not at all comparable. Pity they were not run under different departments.

Lots of us are. Or even more. Has your rate not gone up yet?

Nat6999 · 26/05/2022 17:15

They are using the inflation figure from October for the benefits & pension increases next year, the way things are going inflation could be as high as 12.5%+

RaspberryToo · 26/05/2022 17:16

@MarmiteOnToast -it's if you are on certain benefits re low income, including universal credit.

BensonStabler · 26/05/2022 17:16

@LilacPoppy

I don’t have a husband working who can financially support me. He is my full time unpaid carer. He gets a pittance of caters allowance.

Apologies to everyone as I hadn’t read the full thread before my posts. Just reacting immediately.

To those saying I should switch to UC, thanks for the helpful advice, but I have since read from PP posting a government link the qualifying benefits, that income-related support and allowance is one of the qualifying benefits. I think that is what I am on. I am unsure as claimed 8 years ago and my memory from my dementia is shockingly bad, as is my understanding of complex information hence me getting the facts muddled up, and trouble communicating.

I need to go and check for sure though. Fingers crossed I am on that one. Thanks everyone who helped clarify the facts, my queries and worries.

Receiving Universal Credit or a similar “legacy” benefit.
