Lighthearted - do you think school will be open tomorrow?

Much argument here this morning, DS thinks school is off tomorrow as the online term dates show it as a BH, as the BH has moved to next week I would expect school to be open (there are other inset days coming up).

I’ve emailed school to check and I’ll be gone anyway but what would you expect?

@girlmom21 they are getting a "random extra day" because of the once in a lifetime Platinum Jubilee celebrations.
Yes - gazillions of people will be working those days but schools are always closed on bank holidays.

Why is it ridiculous? Confused

Selecting a day and calling it a bank holiday, when it isn’t?

And the schools are closed - next week - when it's the jubilee.

They moved half term for that reason.

@Intrigueddotcom why? All schools in the country are doing this.

Calling days that aren’t bank holiday, bank holiday?

Whataplanker · 26/05/2022 08:37

Yep, schools could choose when to take their extra jubilee bank holiday as it fell in half term. DD's school had hers in November! I am on mine today as we already had an INSET day tomorrow. Setting myself up for a day of report writing.

MsJuniper · 26/05/2022 08:38

This explains it well. The DfE have put measures in place which actively encourage schools to do this.

The same thing happened in 2012 and 2011 for other additional bank holidays.

Lighthearted - do you think school will be open tomorrow?
purplemunkey · 26/05/2022 08:38

It's in lieu of the bank holiday - rather than them just calling it a bank holiday. Our school added theirs on to the Easter break. Not ridiculous at all.

I'm in Scotland and our schools are off tomorrow and then again on 2nd and 3rd of June.

Although I think our schools normally have a long weekend at the end of May so they have moved the 30th May holiday to the start of June for the Jubilee.

Only in your area of Scotland

Needmorelego · 26/05/2022 08:39

@Intrigueddotcom it's basically a day off in lieu of the bank holiday. Schools aren't just naming a random date as a bank holiday.

I meant the schools in my area, sorry for not being more specific! North Lanarkshire

Matchingcollarandcuffs · 26/05/2022 08:40

Just to be clear it was the wording that threw me, if they said’carried over Bank Holiday’ or ‘day in lieu of extra BH’ I’d have got it but it was the fact they just called it BH.

This school have 11 inset days a year, he’s got a 4 day weekend in 4 weeks time, so it’s not an inset.

Interesting how differently schools are splitting the day though.

itrytomakemyway · 26/05/2022 08:43

Why do they have 11 inset days a year? Is that a state school?

Dreamstosell · 26/05/2022 08:45

Our schools are off tomorrow and Monday (this is our usual May weekend holiday) and then off again next Friday

dementedpixie · 26/05/2022 08:47

My dcs school only has 5 in-service days in a school year

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 26/05/2022 08:50

There are supposed be 195 school days... 194 this year

Matchingcollarandcuffs · 26/05/2022 08:53

It’s an academy, who I believe can set their own, DC has more than a week more insets than the other dcs at another school in a different trust, all secondary

the OP’s one did

balalake · 26/05/2022 11:35

If the dates schools have chosen have varied, perhaps you might be able to visit somewhere without long queues.

Needmorelego · 26/05/2022 15:05

@Intrigueddotcom are you normally this picky? I assume they just didn't put the words "day off in lieu" on the school calendar.
Schools abbreviate all the time...
GCSE
SATS
.....etc

Matchingcollarandcuffs · 26/05/2022 16:46

@Needmorelego but at no point have they emailed us or otherwise explained that they’ve added this extra day, it’s been on the website only which was actually added last year hence the query as I know I’ve bought calendars/diaries that have come with an addendum saying the BHs for Jubilee were confirmed so late they’d already gone to press.

If school had emailed to explain, or even remind us that they were closed tomorrow it would have been fine, they normally do.

OP posts:
Waxonwaxoff0 · 26/05/2022 16:54

DS has inset day tomorrow, they usually have one before the May half term. Then they're off on the 6th as well for the extra bank holiday.

Needmorelego · 26/05/2022 17:46

@Matchingcollarandcuffs so have you actually had confirmation from the school that they are closed Friday? Every school is having this extra day at different times. It might not be this Friday.
If the school hasn't confirmed it then it will all be a bit embarrassing for them if kids turn up tomorrow.
If you haven't had confirmation from the school phone them NOW before the office closes (or it might be too late - you will have to call them in the morning).
