Last time they broke the bed

In a dilemma, married family couple (not saying too much because don’t want to get caught out and have nc) want to come and stay. Haven’t seen them since before pandemic but have ‘seen’ them on video calls.

Both were very obese last time we saw them and after they left I realised that our spare bed was broken, fortunately DH repaired it but he doesn’t think it will take their combined weight and we are very sure they’re a lot bigger than last time.

Just had a message asking to come and stay, how on earth do I word it politely that the bed will not take their weight.

My obese BIL, 27 stone, broke my garden furniture, he just went straight thought it. Garden furniture (some of it) isn't designed to hold large weights. My egg chair can only hold 85kg and although I'm not where near that, a lot of people are that big.

Well, they’r rude inviting themselves to stay. Surely you wait to be asked?

Do they ever invite you.

Say the bed is broken.

Not sure why you need to say you weigh nowhere near 85kg?!

85kg is not necessarily obese, especially in men.

Kind honesty is required. Say you can't host them as the bed is broken but if they book into a hotel you would love to spend time with them X

This is what I was thinking

I’ve told them the bed is broken and we don’t have the money to buy a new one. I’ve said we can put mattress on floor but they’ve declined and they are going to book into local b&b and come to us during day for meals and going out etc.

if they ask whether we think they broke it I’ll come clean, but otherwise I think I’ll say nothing. They are both lovely. I’m going to try and get a second hand frame but doubt I’ll get one by this Friday.

for those that asked, yes they do ask to come and stay, we are happy with this and want to see them, and yes apparently our spare bed is a bit small for them both and the b&b’s got a king size.
