For me it's a few things:
-Learning what past trauma is and how it plays out in relationships
-Learn to say no to things and people and not feel bad about it
-Realising no one really notices or cares what I do or look like; felt liberated to not always wear lots of makeup, dress in a new outfit or have my roots done, or eat out alone, or do anything alone.
-Not watching much current tv and picking up a book instead
-Listening to James O' Brien on LBC ( I know he's not everyone's cup of tea- but I learned alot)
-Waking up v early to have some me time. This was hard as I was a night owl for many years.
-Declutter and only buy when I need something. To be honest this started as I had to downsize to an empty flat after my divorce and am on not much money but it has helped with not worrying about possessions and all the cleaning involved.
-Divorce my ex husband- biggest impact haha

What improved yours?

Can I ask what bone conducting headphones are?

i love reading all these though am grateful I don’t live next door to the pp who takes their Bluetooth speaker into the garden on sunny days. Our NDN did this and we endured it for years until we were finally driven to speak to him and he was fine: had no idea that it was so loud. I’m still triggered by even reading such stuff though!

So that’s been life changing: speaking to our NDN about his music in the garden

Haha that was me with my music speaker in the garden. I promise I don't play it loud and asked my lovely NDNs to check one day when we were both in the garden and they said they couldn't hear it so all is good (lucky to have quite large gardens and only a neighbour on one side of us). I'm glad you finally plucked up the courage to speak to your NDN though, loud music can be really anti social!

  • yoga and Pilates
  • cutting down on sugar (did completely cut it out but now I have it as an occasional treat!)
  • meditation
  • write 3 things I am greatful for in the morning and then in the evening
  • journaling
  • cutting down on alcohol
  • going to sleep between 10-11 and rising very early to enjoy the peace and quiet
I feel all of this has given me more energy, helped massively improve IBS and cleared mind fog

K E T O

after long covid, brain fog - loads of utter shit being honest. I can’t recommend it more.

Are you 100% keto all the time? No fruit or alcohol ever?

How long did it take you to get used to it?

Sorry for all the questions

crystalize · 24/05/2022 16:59

I've been reading bits of this thread since you first started OP, it's been a real pleasure!

Mine: Stopped dying my hair during lockdown - My once dark hair is now a lovely variety of silver streaks - I call it nature's highlights and people compliment me all the time on it!

Also similar to yours @piddocktrumperiness learning about past traumas and how they shape you growing up. Saying no to people.

I love hearing about the people who have moved away for a more peaceful life too. Something I've been wanting to do for years but not quite there yet!

  1. "F*UCK IT" list (not to be confused with bucket list). Includes everything I'm voluntarily not going to do. Very liberating! (Idea is from an excellent book "Getting over being young")

2.Making own bread (water, salt, flour).

3.Making energy balls including chocolate ones (no more store bought chocolate).

4.Library card + audiobooks

5.Supplying mum with Bluetooth headphones, unlimited audiobooks, sewing machine and knitting supplies when she stays. Transformative!

6.Upcycling

7.Not stressing about being hungry (better scheduling/timing meals)

8.Market shopping, minimize supermarket

9.Kick ass underwear at all times.

I love all your points especially the one about supplying your mother with supplies I need to do that when my mother comes to stay!

Nothing at the moment but this thread has seriously made me even more change my current circumstances. I want to :

Change my shitty NHS job

Move to somewhere a bit smaller more financially manageable. Currently house just going on market but I'm struggling to let go as its the last home my late husband and I shared but I need to move on for financial and emotional reasons.

Take up drawing and painting again, not done it for years but used to sell portraits

Sort myself out fitness wise, I've always done some sort of exercise but lately I've lapsed and I've gained weight so I need to get on it again

Be content on my own I'd like to meet someone eventually but husband passed 4 years ago suddenly at 52 I need to process first

Yoga....can anyone recommend a free app please

Lindisfarne1 · 24/05/2022 19:35

Hysterectomy, losing 30kg, strength training. All in mid 50s. Feel like I’m in my 30s now.

@Scottishflower65 that’s awesome. How did you lose the weight and keep it off? Thanks

Reginaldina · 24/05/2022 21:37

A dryer. I've got two young children and it's a life saver.
Aiming for 15,000 to 20,000 steps a day.
Giving up feeling embarrassed by my accent.

Fab018 · 25/05/2022 08:09

@Lindisfarne1

I use yoga with Adriene, on YouTube
or recently I've been doing stretching with Daniela Suarez, 21 day challenge. Again on YouTube.

Hope this helps :)

Adrienne is brilliant.she does all sorts.from short vids to teach u poses.a few meditations and often has a monthly theme going so 30 days of peace, strength etc.and her vids are done more than not with her dog! And varying degrees of difficulty but never too hard.

Mine was fixed by my osteopath. Stretching the diaphragm gives room for the stomach to drop back down apparently. Two sessions and some ab exercises for a bit and it was done. That's after 10+ years on omeprazole and a tube down my throat.

I love reading these!
So interesting to see what are internal and what are external factors

Feel really inspired after reading all these posts about giving up alcohol.

I avoided the wine tonight and went for an evening walk with a flask of chai latte!! My Saturday night treat!

crystalize · 29/05/2022 07:06

@jessicaemily The giving up alcohol is a big theme on this thread. I've given up the red wine... but switched to white 😆I drink much less white though and use lots of ice... gonna try the chai latte, is it an instant one? I've never bought it before.

ShirleyJackson · 29/05/2022 07:32

Chai latte replaced booze for me, too! Top tip is to leave the bag in and add a little bit of honey along with the milk.

pippinsleftleg · 29/05/2022 07:40

I had decided to give up booze just before reading this thread, which has helped keep my resolve! Two weeks now and it’s wonderful to feel clear headed and wake up with fewer headaches (and I really am not a big drinker - a couple of glasses of wine a couple of nights a week and always with food). I can feel the difference.

unfortunately I think it is a ‘women of a certain age’ thing - maybe I’ll be okay with it again when I am past the menopause!
