So happy about Australian election result

Australia has just thrown out its tired, misogynistic, racist and corrupt government and elected a Labour Greens coalition with an agenda for action on climate, social cohesion and implementation of the First Nations Uluru statement.
This is huge. It happened despite a Murdoch dominated press. Our new Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese, was brought up in public housing by a single mother with a disability. Finally a new era. Lot of celebration at our house!

Would that be the Labour Party who released the costings of their manifesto pledges just two days prior to the election and who plans to add $7.4 billion to the budget deficit?

Would that be the Green Party that wants to cut defence spending to the bone, cancel the AUKUS treaty, not permit US troops on Australian soil and be best friends with China?

7.4b you say? Did you check how much of that was added childcare support? About 5b, and economic modelling shows the spending on childcare will be recouped more than twice over - 11b worth of workforce boost a year according to the highly regarded Grattan institute. I’ll go for that. But you stick with the govt that blew an extra 40 billion dollars of waste in their jobkeeper scheme (they said 27b waste, but the fin review analysed it at 40b)
the Green Party get a say, they don’t hold party. The bigger numbers in the balance of party are teal independents who have a climate mandate and are from traditionally economically conservative electorates, including mine. I have high hopes of this. Watch Albanese in Japan next week, he’s not going to kowtow to China, and I doubt he’ll cancel Aukus either. It would play badly with the us and the French will consider spit roasting Scott as adequate compensation for his shafting them so albanese gets a relatively fresh start there.

timeisnotaline · 22/05/2022 09:13

Also, Albanese and Penny Wong both sounded so genuine with their acknowledgment of country and his pledge to the Uluṟu statement from the heart (which had widespread business involvement and support). It’s a day of hope.
Maybe Josh will move to state politics and Victoria will get a liberal opposition that’s not a joke which will be a nice change from the past few years as well!

aurynne · 22/05/2022 09:28

Elated that slimy ScoMo is out. But at the same time saddened that the Labour Party wasn't brave enough to move away from the tried-and-tested pale, male, stale candidate model. Perhaps next election...

Gremlinsateit · 22/05/2022 09:31

You know that the Coalition only released its costings on Tuesday, right? And that Labor’s timing was consistent with the Coalition’s timing in the last 3 elections when it was in opposition?

AdmirablePlatypus · 22/05/2022 09:34

Love your comments @Gremlinsateit

@Shade17 , please stay where you are, we get enough Tory-worshipping xenophobes migrating here as it is.

Amazing that right wingers on here are - as per usual - making claims without a shred of evidence.

milkyaqua · 22/05/2022 09:38

And bloody coalition governments are often a disaster IMO.

It's not a coalition government.

I know @Pickabearanybear. The amount of misinformation spread about on this thread is an eye opener.

As an outsider looking in (NZ) I’m worried for you. Not about Albanese, he seems a perfectly pleasant man, but about the coalition. I fear you will end up where we are - a left wing government obsessed with identity politics and lacking a strong backbone in traditional labour/ class politics. I hope this is the case.

That is my concern too. Also the greens defence spending position makes me worried with the emergence of China and the resurgence of Russia.

I'm so happy to know that we now have a government which will be diverse, represent and listen to women, reverse the gratuitously cruel cuts for disability funding and address climate change with urgency. It's a really happy day.

I’m just holding my breath waiting to see the Murugappan family home in Biloela :)

TheSandgroper · 22/05/2022 10:26

@Pickabearanybear You can negotiate all you like in the lower house but the Senate has long been a sticking point.

Adam Bandt is pleased to have company in the House of Reps but will be working his senators to get everything he wants. And transrights and gender affirmation will be on that list. He might say at the outset that Supply is guaranteed but that will probably be the only concession he gives.

Then there’s Jacqui Lambie who appears to be of a more sensible bent.

StartupRepair · 22/05/2022 10:30

Jacquie is a bit of a wild card. Just heard there are going to be 6 Labor reps who are Aboriginal. This is historic.

@StartupRepair do you know what Labor’s plans are for climate change policies? I’ve been reading the paper today but haven’t seen specifics.

SerendipityJane · 22/05/2022 10:57

We can only hope it's part of a wider shift in the West.

Wow, that is terrific - I didn’t know it was as many as 6. And the wonderful Linda Burney as Indigenous Affairs Minister :)

TheSandgroper · 22/05/2022 11:08

Well, Ken Wyatt has been Indigenous Minister for the last five years. He was the first indigenous person in the House of Reps, first to be appointed minister and not just for Indigenous Affairs. No, I’m not from Hasluck. I think he is the biggest loser out of our redistribution. It did him no favours.

Here is a summary - it’s not terrific policy, but hopefully the influence of the teal independents will help to improve it. Greens may or may not help given the history around carbon reduction and the carbon price under the Rudd and Gillard governments.

The policy is disappointing, but not surprising given how Labor has been hammered on climate policies previously. www.abc.net.au/news/2022-05-18/federal-election-climate-change-policy-labor-liberal-greens/101074924

I'm not sure that the Greens would get to influence defence spending to such a degree. They can have a position and the ALP may need to negotiate and adjust some bills to get them approved in the Senate, but that would be the extent of it.

I think Ken Wyatt is quite admirable in many ways, but I think his hands may have been tied by his choice of party, and I’m a big fan of Linda Burney.
