So happy about Australian election result

Australia has just thrown out its tired, misogynistic, racist and corrupt government and elected a Labour Greens coalition with an agenda for action on climate, social cohesion and implementation of the First Nations Uluru statement.
This is huge. It happened despite a Murdoch dominated press. Our new Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese, was brought up in public housing by a single mother with a disability. Finally a new era. Lot of celebration at our house!

I’m not so sure about that @YorkshireDude (I mean I hope not!) - Labour have talked a lot about investment and development of technologies for the environment and as part of their manifesto they haven’t said they will raise taxes.
The Greens got a lot of votes but barely any seats so they don’t have that much power, and as soon as their real agenda becomes more well known they’ll lose votes again. People like the environmental stuff but don’t want nationalised industries, banning private schools and especially not banning private healthcare (which is much more prevalent over here than in the U.K. and works really well).

anyway, time will tell - the thing is, I’ve lived long enough now to see that within a fairly short period of time this lot will be out of favour too and the cycle continues.

Pretty much all Western governments are now full-on green radicals, and Australia will be the same. Here in the UK, households are being squeezed with high road fuel and energy prices under the banner of net-zero carbon. We're allowed to burn imported gas at high prices, but we're not allowed to exploit the natural reserves under our own feet. We import wood chips from across the atlantic to fire out power stations, resulting in huge amounts of heavy fuel oil being burned in cargo ships, but we're not allowed to burn the coal reserves under our feet.

Sales of new petrol and diesel cars will be banned, but we will create other environmental impacts:

  1. The lithium for electric car batteries comes from huge open cast mines, and requires vast amounts of fresh, clean water for processing
  2. Rare earths mining and processing in China for electric vehicles and wind turbines has created massive areas of heavily contaminated land
  3. Cobalt mining for electric vehicles is using child labour in the Democratic Republic of Congo
  4. The environmental impact of manufacturing electric vehicles is greater than for petrol and diesel vehicles
So we are going to throw away one hundred years of petrol and diesel engine development, and achieve little to nothing. And there will still be particulate emissions from vehicles, because many emissions originate from tyre and brake wear. On top of that, many people will be priced out of car ownership because they can't afford an electric vehicle. In short, it's scientifically illiterate, will damage social mobility, and is totally barmy, but it will all be done anyway, and everyone will congratulate themselves on being green.

I'm willing to bet that Australians will soon experience a large decrease in quality of life due to similar policies being implemented in Australia. And I note that Australia has soaring inflation, same as the UK, which will pile on the pressure.

As an outsider looking in (NZ) I’m worried for you. Not about Albanese, he seems a perfectly pleasant man, but about the coalition. I fear you will end up where we are - a left wing government obsessed with identity politics and lacking a strong backbone in traditional labour/ class politics. I hope this is the case.

Labor is not part of the coalition. And Albo is not a woke bloke, thank god.

SD1978 · 22/05/2022 03:20

Huge increase to the deficit, promises that most likely can't be kept, and money thrown around to appease the masses......along with a OM who can't answer simple questions. It's gonna be great...........although in fairness, neither was a winner.

TheSandgroper · 22/05/2022 03:20

A vote for Labor is a vote for the Greens. Adam Bandt has made quite clear that Trans Women Are Women. That he supports unfettered, free gender affirmation with no mention of scientific probity.

There goes fairness in womens sport, in comes the opening of womens toilets and organisations to any bloke fetishist who cares to walk in, and paedophiles may have open slather.

My state swung over 10% to Labor. I agree ScoMo had to go but I am in considerable despair over what the future holds for women.

SD1978 · 22/05/2022 03:23

Also wasn't a huge Scomo fan- but the assumption that suddenly
All will drastically improve in Australia suddenly seems unlikely!

I'm not giving into the TWAW bullshit either just because I voted Labor.

As a pp said, we have to pick the best out of usually a shit bunch. We just need to be vocal on this too.

Ozgirl75 · 22/05/2022 03:25

That’s interesting @YorkshireDude - I’ll have to read more on it. And yes, I know it’s Labor but my English phone always corrects it to Labour 😁

milkyaqua · 22/05/2022 03:25

I think it helps to have a PM with a functioning conscience, a basic kindness towards those who are struggling in life, a belief in climate change, and hope for a better future for all, for starters.

So correct it back so that we can at least assume you know something about politics. 🤨

Ozgirl75 · 22/05/2022 03:26

I think women will need to educate themselves quickly about the Greens ideas on the trans issues as we haven’t even begun to see the impact of this.

YorkshireDude · 22/05/2022 03:28

StartupRepair · 22/05/2022 02:35

Conservative politics and denial of climate change has seen people's lives and homes wiped out in fires and floods. Some still living in sheds and caravans 2.5 years on. Their living standards pretty comprehensively destroyed.

The fires were because the old tried and tested policies of creating fire breaks and clearing brush and undergrowth were stopped for environmental reasons.

Those whose homes didn't get destroyed had an adequate fire break and/or had cleared brush and undergrowth. If I recall correctly, one of those people was a firefighter, and he got into trouble for taking action to protect his home, but when the fires began his home was one of the few that was not destroyed.

Unfortunately many environmental policies are driven by ideological beliefs rather than science and tried and tested methods.

I'm particularly happy that the Pentecostal influence in government is over.

Me too. This is a great result.

milkyaqua · 22/05/2022 03:39

“Labor is the party of mainstream Australia and the values of mainstream Australia are that we look after each other and that we aspire to a better life for future generations,” he said.

“Labor’s historic task is to move more people into the middle-class, to appeal to small business and if we don’t do that Labor won’t be successful.”

Nothing particularly controversial about that, you might think. Nor would most people think there was anything controversial about his response in a more lighthearted rapid-fire round of questions when asked if men could have babies.

“No,” he replied. ...

The woke left turned on Albo with a ferocity and viciousness that would have left Genghis Khan reaching for his pronouns guide.

And it was then that I knew he had won the election.

not a woke bloke

I'm not sure why you think this. It is looking very likely Labor will achieve a majority government.

HoppingPavlova · 22/05/2022 03:55

I’ll start by saying I think Morrison is a complete and utter dick - but I’m not happy. Several decades of working life has shown Labour will screw me to the hilt and I’ll go backwards under their term.

The are the complete Masters of economic mismanagement and for those who have not been on this rodeo before, what will happen is they will fuck the economy like nothing else, and that will be the sole reason the Libs will be voted back in down the track, to fix the mess.

They make great noises about education and health but don’t seem to achieve anything in practical terms so if you believe changes are coming there 🤣, nope. If anything their economic mismanagement will mean even less $$ for these down the line.

YorkshireDude · 22/05/2022 04:05

Meet the new boss, same as the old boss.

I'm absolutely amazed that anyone thinks anything much will change!

Hmm, did okay during the global recession in 2008...

Flatandhappy · 22/05/2022 04:14

It has just flashed up on my iPad that Labor has secured a majority. Tbh I think what we needed most was change, the idea of ScoMo getting in again was unbearable. Let’s give Labor a chance to see what they do.
