Lavrov to meet Turkish Foreign minister in Turkey on 8th June, accompanied by a military delegation. Amongst topics for discussion is the potential for a humanitarian corridor for vessels carrying food.

Lavrov to visit Saudi Arabia this Wed to meet with FMs of Saudi, UAE, Oman, Kuwait and Bahrain. The Gulf ministers also to speak with Ukrainian FM. - agenda for meeting unclear.

The Kyiv Independent, [31/05/2022 12:41]
⚡️German defense committee chief urges Scholz to unblock supplies of armored vehicles to Ukraine.

Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann, head of the German parliament’s defense committee, has called on German Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s office to deliver 50 Marder infantry fighting vehicles to Ukraine as soon as possible. German media reported earlier that Scholz had blocked Marder supplies for weeks.

If this is accurate and there isn't a good reason - Fuck Scholz.

@Alexandra2001 great minds and all that 😉😃

OwlsDance · 31/05/2022 13:17

I think it's time someone started looking into his bloody accounts.

Alexandra2001 · 31/05/2022 13:33

Bad but with only a 20mm gun as its main weapon, its not what Ukraine needs... which is Artillery and Rockets, both of which the West seem reluctant to supply in large numbers.

I am fearful the West is weakening its resolve and will seek peace with Russia, rather than want their defeat.

Sky reported on a front line unit that had mlaws, they were ineffective as the Russians never come within range.... but it was uplifting to see that the Ukrainians had raised a flag on land Russian armour was operating from!

Can anyone seriously believe Russia will allow grain exports?
More likely they want to ensure Turkey will keep the BS closed off.

On Arab states, again, make sure they do not increase oil/gas production.

All smoke and mirrors, just like their so called peace talks with UKraine.

My sense was more whether Russia consider Turkey to be the weak link in the NATO chain.

Zelensky however tweeting 17th a ago that he had spoken again to Erdogan and thanked him for his help in the process to restore peace. So clearly something is happening.

I'd have to check but I don't think anybody in the West has promised to supply western produced Armoured Fighting Vehicles with large calibre weapons attached.

As for artillery and rockets, yes I agree I'd like to see more deployed now but it might be worth bearing in mind that for most countries (US aside) providing say even a dozen XX type long range guns or twenty yy type long range rocket launchers is actually donating a sizeable chunk of that country's inventory.

Yes, Turkey is making a shit load off Bayraktars but the cost of grain is going through the roof and tensions are rising between citizens and refugees in part because of this...

Igotjelly · 31/05/2022 14:30

What do we make of Russian media’s sabre rattling? More empty threats, a sign of weakness or something more?

The sensible part of me things the former but I can never help but have a bit of a worry.

Yeh the stuff around WWIII having started. Also comments around a desire to kidnap a NATO leader whilst they’re on their way to Kyiv.

katem98 · 31/05/2022 15:01

Have to admit @Igotjelly, they've worried me a little today. Not sure if it's because I'm paying more attention as been less busy with work but they seem to have upped the sabre rattling again?

Igotjelly · 31/05/2022 15:04

I suppose it’s no worse than simulating an attack on the UK, which we saw a few weeks ago. It gets attention in the Western press and worries people who in turn are likely to put pressure on their Govt. to take their foot off the gas in terms of supporting Ukraine.

MagicFox · 31/05/2022 15:04

Re the kidnapping: I've seen the footage and it is mental, they're laughing their heads off at how insane their own comments are.

MagicFox · 31/05/2022 15:07

I didn't see the WWIII comments, just the one about a nuclear attack on the US (by the white haired guy that looks like an evil elf - whenever he talks it's nuclear maximus and he's usually having to be calmed down). The only other comment I've seen is the one about demilitarising NATO which isn't really saying anything. Have I missed a big one?

OP posts:
Igotjelly · 31/05/2022 15:09

I think it was rolled up in the statement about demilitarisation of the whole of NATO.

I believe this is the WWIII comment, unless I've missed something else!

MagicFox · 31/05/2022 15:14

If you think about it, they're not saying anything different to what they've been saying for weeks. The idea that Russia are just doing their nice thing in Ukraine to help out their brothers and now the evil West is turning it into a war. It's a threat about weapon deliveries. That's what's precipitated it. 'Oh well not the US is delivering these super duper weapons we might have to admit this is a war with them'. It's nothing different to what they've already been saying. They ramp up the rhetoric when something is reposted they don't like.

The new pres of Russian occupied South Ossetia, Gagloev, who was favored by the Kremlin during second round of elections suspended the referendum on joining Russia that was set for July. Interesting that Russia is easing the pressure on Georgia for now

The Times AT thetimes
Ministers delay closure of coal-fired generators over fear of gas shortages caused by Ukraine war

Six million households could face blackouts this winter because of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, ministers have been warned, as they look to bolster electricity supplies by prolonging the life of coal and nuclear power stations

The Times has been told that the government’s “reasonable” worst-case scenario, which has been drawn up by officials from across Whitehall, says that there could be widespread gas shortages if Russia goes further in cutting off supplies to the EU

A minister said the briefing suggested that electricity could have to be rationed for up to 6m homes at the start of next year, mostly at peaks in the morning and evening.

The curbs could last more than a month, causing energy prices to rise again

Kwasi Kwarteng, the business secretary, has written to the owners of Britain’s three remaining coal-fired power stations to ask them to stay open for longer than planned.

They were due to close in September under plans to phase them out entirely by 2024 to reduce emissions

The worst-case scenario is understood to raise concerns that Norwegian imports of gas, on which Britain is reliant, could more than halve because of increased EU demand.

Imports of liquefied natural gas could also halve because of greater competition

The modelling is understood to assume that Britain will receive no imports of gas from “interconnectors” in the Netherlands and Belgium as both countries face their own emergencies

The closure of the plants would lead to a shortage of electricity, forcing the govt, in effect, to ration.

It would be turned off on weekdays at peak times in the morning, between 7am and 10am, and in the evenings, between 4pm and 9pm.

Gas supply to homes would be unaffected

Officials are also said to have drawn up an even bleaker strategy in the event of Russia cutting off gas entirely to the EU.

It suggests that energy blackouts could start in December and last for three months, with blackouts both on weekdays and weekends

The govt is in talks with Centrica about reopening a natural gas storage facility off the east coast of England, with more than £1bn of subsidies.

There are concerns in govt that gas prices could remain high next year as the war between Russia and Ukraine becomes more entrenched

Is this catastrophising talk or is this actually likely to happen? That the UK might have to do electricity rationing?
