Worth a brief glance - I would imagine there are many Russian's like this man. Very brave to speak out, the Russian regimes hand of revenge reaches far.

Interesting tweet

OD: There's reports of DNR soldiers shooting at Russian soldiers as well.

SL: Why would they be doing that?”

Presumably the DNR soldiers are forced conscripts from DNR occupied regions who have been press-ganged into fighting for Russia. They probably felt they had nothing left to lose.

I feel for the Ukraine forces as well and don't blame individual soldiers if they are also deserting. The fighting in Severodonetsk has been absolutely relentless. It must feel like a suicide mission. They may feel abandoned and sacrificed like those in the steel plant in MariupolSad

Thank you, that does make sense. I had forgotten a lot of DPR were conscripted.
I agree with the rest of what you say. The Ukrainians must in many cases feel that way.

Thank you for that article. It is brave of him. I was interested by what he said about the dead way Putin & Co use the Russian language.m; and, related to that, the Russian film he mentioned called ‘Loveless’ about the lovelessness of everyday Russian lives. Also interesting was his reference to the difference, which favours him, in his having a Russian name and Slavic face compared to some of his friends from other regions.

LoveLarry · 31/05/2022 08:57

Yes thanks for the link and I too am interested in the comments about language

I am rubbish at languages so have nothing but admiration for those who are bi or multi lingual. However the tweets from official Russian sources are so hard to read that I wonder where (and when) they learned English. Word salad

MMBaranova · 31/05/2022 09:05

"Our main goal right now is to liberate Severodonetsk and Lisichansk [across the river to the west]. According to the military, the Ukrainian forces group on these directions is about 10,000 people..." - Luhansk breakaway head Pasechnik.

The Russian side claims 1/3 control of Severodonetsk, which is credible I suppose.

These are grim days with the concentration of Russian forces.

tass.com/defense/1458189

There's a reasonable amount of Russian video supposedly from within Severodonetsk.

I'm noticing a lot of spelling errors that suggest the B Team posting in haste.

The underlying fragility of Russia and the generational timebomb Putin can't stop.

Chechnya's place in Russia. Why no Russian sees it as part of Russia. Why the Chechans are Putin's last line of defence and are personally loyal only to Putin.

Here is a nasty piece of work, Shamanov, talking about Russia’s plans for Ukraine with mention of the Baltic states and Poland thrown in.

He also speaks of the ‘international’ tribunal of war criminals. He says they would invite China and other BRIC countries. He then describes the criminals squirming on the benches on their bottoms - those bottoms given haemoroids by hammering nails into them.

Imagine having a mind that quite openly comes up with a metaphor like that.

The Kyiv Independent, [31/05/2022 10:27]
⚡️Official: Russian troops seize half of Sievierodonetsk.

Oleksandr Stryuk, head of the Sievierodonetsk military administration in Luhansk Oblast, said that Ukrainian troops keep defending the city. Sievierodonetsk has become the focal point of fighting in the Donbas in recent weeks.

BTW, it might be worth keeping eyes on the 1922 Committee. There are growing and significant rumblings today. The quarters this is coming from is eyebrow raising - its not the usual suspects. Political Twitter is starting to think it might lead to action for once. It could well have significant implications for the war in Ukraine - I think the cross party support in the UK is only in part because its difficult to say differently. In power its more possible to be softer and have empty promises like Germany. I would very much depend on who might replace Johnson.

MMBaranova · 31/05/2022 09:46

Before I get my head down to shift a pile of work, this video posted an hour ago definitely shows a location in the centre of the Severodonetsk built up area. When the lens pans back near the start to the Russian side fighters the circular edged area is below the word Hall in my zoomed in Google image and then the Yellow / Blue flag colours structure and the building ahead are part of the Sports School.

Part of me thinks its worrying. Part of me thinks its the polar opposite of virtue signalling, where people spout a lot of shit on social media then go eat their dinner and get on with Real Life and do precisely fuck all about the things they've 'shown their commitment' to.

The breakaway Russian controlled region of Georgia have ditched their planned referendum on joining up with Russia.

Agree very much with @RedToothBrush suggestion that we should be keeping one eye on the 1922 committee. Andrea Leadsom has just become the 40th Tory MP to come out against the PM. These are not insignificant numbers anymore.

That twitter video - they are saying

This is the centre of Severodonetsk. Earlier Germans came here (I'm assuming he means "Nazis", so Ukrainians), left some "presents". He then says they ran very quickly over there [next to blue and yellow dome], and left their "presents". We are going to clear this out now. He said they ran so fast, they should compete on Olympics, they would definitely win.

OwlsDance · 31/05/2022 11:24

OwlsDance · 31/05/2022 11:46

Well I couldn't disagree more. While a lot of people (myself included) hoped sanctions would stop the war, they very obviously didn't. The war will stop through military and diplomatic efforts, maybe internal political tensions in Russia will be a factor too. However, stopping the war isn't enough. We also need to make sure that same thing doesn't happen again, and that's what sanctions are for. Russia needs to be weakened economically, so that a threat of another invasion like that doesn't come for good few decades, hopefully ever.

There needs to be a change in regime as well, but we can't make that happen. It can happen from within, hopefully as a result of economic collapse.

Alexandra2001 · 31/05/2022 12:04

Completely disagree with Jenkins.

So because we (uk/eu) are still buying gas/oil from Russia and hence funding its war effort, we should give them even more by reversing sanctions?

Sanctions will and are hurting Russia but they are long term, which is what the EU have said from the outset.

Meanwhile European Govt's, receiving billions in extra taxation from the rising prices, could cut fuel duties to help consumers and still get similar amounts in tax as pre invasion.

Thank you for the translation OwlsDance. How interesting that they even go so far as to call the Ukrainian army ‘Germans’.
