Like the bloke on QT last night said, there's a lot of anger building up inside the public and it will find a way of coming out.

Luckily we have had the party of laws for others and order for others in charge for many years who have been busily reducing police numbers and stoking up hatred, so there is nothing to worry about.

Noisyprat · 20/05/2022 19:46

@L1ttledrummergirl , yes great post. What crossed my mind last week was the change in various 'laws' and rules. Police now have increased stop and search powers. The announcement about shop lifters being 'let off'. Anyone would think that maybe they expecting an upturn (from the shockingly high) in the level of crime and disorder. Sad I know, but I am watching this!

An interesting thought.

The news has just been talking about pitch invasions and violence against football players being on the increase. They are asking what can be done to prevent it and why clubs aren't stopping it.
They are not asking why its increasing now.

Imagine, you are feeling disenfranchised from politics, aware that the poorest in society are getting poorer, bills are going up, you may not be able to afford a ticket in the future.
You are worried about your job, your home, feeding your family.

You can see the government and their families avoiding paying taxes, building swimming pools, giving millions to their mates in dodgy contracts.
The prime minister attended multiple gatherings for which he received no penalty as the met declined to investigate his attendance, whilst the junior staff at the same events received fines.

It appears that the government and police are both corrupt, and you have no way of squaring the circle.

Civilisation is a veneer, a mask we wear to avoid killing each other. When the population feel that being civil is pointless, they get restless.

I think that the violence at football is a pressure cooker letting of steam but unless things change drastically at the top of government this is just a start.

I hope I'm wrong.

You’re not wrong sadly, we’ve seen it happen in other countries in very recent history; it’s perfectly possible it could happen here. It can happen anywhere.

(there’s an interesting podcast - ‘it could happen here’ that explores this. It’s America-centric but it’s transferable in some respects. It’s by Robert Evans who also does ‘behind the bastards. He’s very listenable)

"Exc: Sue Gray met Boris Johnson some weeks ago to discuss partygate handling

Details scarce but everyone trying to play down its significance

And there’s been no attempt to be transparent about it until now"

Wonder whether that meeting came after the assurances that he'd only get 1 FPN.

I wonder if junior officials will start leaking what happened at these parties if they are the ones who end up carrying the can?

I very much hope so.

Veralil · 20/05/2022 22:15

L1ttledrummergirl It has been worrying me for some time now , will anyone in Government be prepared to acknowledge how very angry most of the population are ? I watched a clip of Mhairi Black calling out the Tories , she actually used the "F" word.

Fascism. She said we were sleepwalking towards Fascism now , her speech is worth a watch , it is thought provoking.

I've watched it. Twice actually.
Impassioned and needs to be seen

On Twitter it's being reported that Boris Johnson and Sue Gray had a meeting to discuss how to handle party gate.
Of course they did.

Roussette · 21/05/2022 07:07

Just watching BBC news on this now. Downing Street are saying BJ says it is up to her (SG) if she includes the photos or not in the report. Yeah right...
The validity of all of this is now being questioned.
Those who are going to be named have been told and they have until 5pm on Sunday to dispute that happening.

Report due early next week.

If the Sue Gray report is critical BJ will cling to the fact he "only" got one FPN like a drowning man. "Yes, she says none of the parties were excusable/I lied to Parliament, but remember the police didn't think I broke the law".

I wonder what he will say when asked if he misled Parliament about guidance being followed in Downing Street at all times?

prettybird · 21/05/2022 09:23

Re BJ getting away with being at the parties on the technicality that he didn't attend as he both lives and works in No 10.....

....doesn't the PM technically in practice live at No 11 and works as much as BJ works Wink at No 10? Hmm

Menomadness · 21/05/2022 09:37

@L1ttledrummergirl
Great post. Funnily enough I was talking about the exact thing with my partner last night.
We are both amazed that there is so little open shows of unrest publicly such as riots, mass demonstrations etc. I guess Social media platforms such as Twitter in some ways helps alleviate this. As we see these platforms can and do add fuel to fire but also give people an opportunity to vent their frustrations, have their voices heard and recognised in a way that maybe wasn't possible without direct action we have seen in the past.
I do think people are overall becoming more and more angry about the lack of accountability and the differing standards applied to some. If this Government continue on this path I think we may see more direct action taken by the public.

ADadInDisguise · 21/05/2022 14:20

"Like the bloke on QT last night said, there's a lot of anger building up inside the public and it will find a way of coming out."

The huge Brexit protests were ignored. People then were told that they were Citizens of Nowhere and that they were disenfranchised.

Patel has just made brought in laws against peaceful protest.

We are seeing attacks on the institutions of democracy, anything that can hold the government to account.

So maybe it will boil over? The gutter press are keeping many appeased, and many are apathetic at the moment. Online I see both echo chambers but I can't assess the comparative size of each and how things are in the wider public.

Notonthestairs · 21/05/2022 16:02

Interesting article about a Wakefield focus group. Cost of living obviously a major theme. But Partygate had already poisoned the waters.

balalake · 21/05/2022 16:15

Football disorder at the end of the season is sadly not new and has happened several times with play-off matches.

The other forms of disorder more likely to be protest/anger about the government being expressed in some way.

However, the level of drug consumption in this country, not just in the House of Commons, may reduce the likelihood. Too many people smoke cannabis.

Adil Ray OBE
@adilray
It’s simply not good enough for Met Police to issue just one fine to the PM and close the case without explanation. He holds the highest position in public office. He works for us. We deserve accountability and transparency. Anything else could easily be seen as complicity.

Agree with this.

Stokey · 21/05/2022 16:54

There's an interesting article in the Times today about David Canzani, the man who has now become Johnson's adviser and is Lynton Crosby's protégé. He's pushing a strong hard right message and is behind some of the PM's more liberal policies on climate, trans rights etc being dropped in favour of things like the Rwanda refugee centre. So we can definitely expect to see more of the "war on woke".

Presumably Lyndon Crosby is winging his way to the UK to perform similar magic for Johnson Grin

Notonthestairs · 21/05/2022 17:57

Lynton!

Blossomtoes · 21/05/2022 18:31

Matthew Parris (former Tory MP) describes Johnson in The Times today as “a weird windbag of an entertainer”. And concludes “Of government we have very little”.

Zonder · 22/05/2022 09:07

So much drama on twitter today. Was Zac Goldsmith at any of the parties? Or the Tory MP allegedly involved in nipplegate?

What a mess.

ClaudineClare · 22/05/2022 09:22

I hadn't heard about #nipplegate until I saw your post Zonder. Honestly it is just🤯. What next?

DuncinToffee · 22/05/2022 09:44

I missed that one as well

A Senior Tory MP is caught up in allegations swirling around Westminster that he plied 4 victims with date-rape drugs.

It is claimed the man used the substance on a fellow Conservative MP, who awoke to find his nipples being licked

One MP said the suspected person “has been looking terrible recently”

And there is more

Two Tory MPs have also been accused of proposing a threesome to a minister’s girlfriend, which she refused
