Agree with some of that as I'd never thought of it that way.

But the thought process of many has been it's done to exclude those more likely to vote Labour as they often don't holiday and can't afford passports or driving.

They've also reinstated overseas voting for brits abroad. I assume they're banking on this hidden resource of tory voters. Except we all fucking hate the bastards for what they've done to us.

Dashdotdotdash · 27/05/2022 22:11

I'm wondering a bit why Raab continues to support Johnson. You'd think he might work out that he has nothing to lose by speaking up: it's inevitable that he will be out of Parliament after the next election if Johnson stays, he'll probably be out even if Johnson goes, but either way he has very little to lose by speaking out against him.

In a Cabinet of dullards, Raab stands out as being particularly stupid.

Roussette · 28/05/2022 06:59

Raab will never be forgiven for holidaying whilst Afghanistan falls, and never apologising. Just disgusting.
He'll be out at the next GE, his majority is only 1,000.

I don't think Raab would have a job under another leader which is probably why he's supporting Boris. Also none of the cabinet have broken ground and isn't looking like any of them will.

The vast majority of this cabinet of dolts would not get another job with another leader - that is why they are there, they are welded to the PM.

yougov.co.uk/topics/politics/articles-reports/2022/05/28/yougov-mrp-boris-johnson-set-lose-seat-labour-swee

Latest YouGov polls will make interesting reading for MP's over the weekend.

"From the 88 constituencies which the Conservatives either (a) won from Labour in 2019, or (b) currently hold with a majority of less than 15pts over Labour, our modelling predicts that just three would remain in Conservative hands: Ashfield, Bassetlaw, and Dudley North."

prettybird · 28/05/2022 09:00

....the shame for Ashfield, Bassetlaw, and Dudley North. Confused

I know Ashfield from years back (first went there during the miners strike - my Uni boyfriend was from there). The fact that it is now Conservative is Shock

I think changes like this happen when the demographic changes.

I have no idea what it's like in Ashfield but in areas where (for example) miners will have moved from and a different demographic moved in and have no experience if that then the voting can change.

The Labour Party have an uphill battle ahead winning back the old 'red wall' voters.

National opinion polls are 1 thing - but it's the differences at local level that matter - Tories that think they are in those marginals and even those where the Lib Dems pose a challenge should be worried.

Notonthestairs · 28/05/2022 11:21

Anne-Marie Morris (Newton Abbot) has resubmitted her letter.

DuncinToffee · 28/05/2022 11:27

Steve Brine, Winchester and Chanlers Ford, as well.

ancientgran · 28/05/2022 11:29

Anne Marie Morris has had the whip removed so her letter doesn't count. She voted with Labour on something, VAT on fuel maybe? So she's no longer a Conservative MP. Amazing isn't it, daring to vote with your conscience and your out, break the law and it is OK. We live in a mad mad world.

Notonthestairs · 28/05/2022 11:31

She's had the whip restored and promptly put her letter in!

"Update: 34 Tory MPs publicly questioning PM's position. 24 now calling for him to go asap. That's up 9 since Gray report was published.

Brine: "Will not defend the indefensible"
Marie Morris: "Frankly insulting"
Heald: "Dismayed and appalled...discussing what happens next"

I didn't know she'd been reinstated, that must have been fast. I live locally but she isn't my MP but I'm surprised that wasn't on local news. I can't even find it if I google her, just coming up with her losing the whip and her letter not counting.

Notonthestairs · 28/05/2022 12:03

Party whip was restored 12th May according to her Wiki page.

ancientgran · 28/05/2022 12:06

I'm surprised they reinstated her when they knew she was calling for Johnson to go. Maybe that's a bad sign about how many letters they have?

Notonthestairs · 28/05/2022 12:50

Tom Larkin (Sky) points out that when May was challenged the known letters of No Confidence numbered about 20 (threshold was 48).

ilovesooty · 28/05/2022 12:52

I wonder how near May is to sending one in herself.

Tory by-election candidate Helen Hurford is said to have been ordered not to do press because party bosses believe she will struggle when asked about Boris Johnson’s law-breaking"

Roussette · 28/05/2022 12:57

Surely there are only the letters we know about. The ones that MPs are happy to make a statement on.
There will be anonymous letters, there must be. We know of 25, it could be far more than that like Theresa May

If it was really close to the number (is it 54?) then it would seem odd to reinstate Morris wouldn't it? I mean she could just tip it over.

Great misprint in the article. I love the reference to shindogs at Downing Street.

It maybe that she has good support from her local constituency and Tory HQ don't want her to stand as an independent in the next election and split their vote. So an attempt to bring her back under their roof? I don't know.
