I live 6 miles from a major British city and…

…we don’t have Deliveroo. Nor do we have Uber Eats. The Just Eat app tells me that I’m able to order a curry from a nearby town and…that’s it.

I LONG to order a kebab/burrito/Vietnamese/Thai/something delicious for dinner, but I’m stuck living in the 1980s.

Oh, and I've never used Uber either - black cab every time for me & I love them.

Roselilly36 · 17/05/2022 07:38

One of the reasons we moved! We live 3miles out of the city centre now, we can have anything delivered, subway, dominos, maccy ds, five guys, Krispy Kreme, KFC, Indian, kebab, Chinese, Thai any of the big chain Italian restaurants also deliver to us. We have adult sons living at home, so it’s quite a novelty, where we lived before this wasn’t possible, we would never move back. Not good for the waistline, but very convenient.

The amount of judgement on this thread from those suggesting you could just cook yourself 🤦‍♀️

People suggesting doing this - you do realise most people who use take away apps can cook they just don’t fancy it?

@BelleTheBananas we live in a small town with no Deliveroo but a few of the local takeaways have online order and delivery options. Have you looked to see if that’s possible?

Exactly.
I'm sure I couldnt cook Indian food as well as my local takeaway but even if I tried it would orobably take half the day to cook 3 or 4 dishes and the other half to clear up!!

And a take away pizza cooked in a pizza oven is not the same as one I cook at home in a normal oven whatever DH tries to insist

TibetanTerrah · 17/05/2022 07:45

Same OP. I live in the city centre and can get anything delivered in 20mins. DM lives six miles away and has only just got deliveroo in the last couple of weeks in her area, with a corner shop and a Chinese on it.

The thing is these outer areas would love the work, both increased business for restaurants and deliveroo riders. Its pretty short sighted.

sashagabadon · 17/05/2022 07:49

You need to have people in your area willing to get on their bike / scooter and deliver it to you. Students for example. Are there any?

carefullycourageous · 17/05/2022 07:56

I wonder if the labour shortage is also an impact on this - harder to get people to do the shittiest jobs and there are few jobs more shitty than being a Deliveroo rider.

I never use the services because the companies are exploitative of their workers.

Whooshaagh · 17/05/2022 08:02

I live in rural France.
I have to travel 20 miles if I want Indian food.
The only takeout at our nearest town is pizza and i have to fetch it myself.
On the upside I now am a whizz at making curry.

Letsrunabath · 17/05/2022 08:12

We have no delivery services, just do it the old fashioned way, phone and pick up. I actually prefer it as it saves my waistline.

MeanderingGently · 17/05/2022 08:15

Ha ha.....one of the reasons why I love being in rural England. No deliveries out here, no takeaways, no Deliveroo. Tesco has been known to deliver shopping if the van driver can find us, that's about it. I think the local market town (some few miles away) might have an over-the-counter pizza place, not sure. Major town is 30 miles away, no-one comes out this far down our tiny lanes. Some of our lanes are so narrow they have passing places, many have grass growing up the centre, we're well off the beaten track.

Long may our peace and quiet last.....!

Exactly. Surprised how so many on here are comfortable with using the likes of Deliveroo and Uber Eats.

Terrible business model with people doing endless little fetching and carrying jobs for people who CBA to leave the house (yes I know they're useful for some if disabled or home alone with DC but a lot of people who use the service don't fall into that category).

Uber has only just started making a profit and all the others lose money because it's not possible to do so while paying a decent wage to the people who actually do the deliveries at a price that people are willing to pay to use it.

There's a whole load of financial jiggery pokery behinds the scenes that keep these shows on the road and it seems to be all about extracting a load of money for investors before selling the idea on to someone else.

IntricateRhyme · 17/05/2022 08:18

We can't even get Ocado where we are, let alone Deliveroo or UberEats. JustEat lists a deal handful of local chippies and an Indian restaurant but that's it.

NightmareSlashDelightful · 17/05/2022 08:27

Well I live in the middle of a capital city and stopped using Deliveroo because the food was always cold when it arrived.

I got banned from UberEats because I complained about cold food too many times. Yep — complain more than twice and they dump you off the platform.

Dreadful businesses with a manipulative, exploitative business model.

CheshireCats · 17/05/2022 08:29

No food delivery at all here 😢

Tilltheend99 · 17/05/2022 08:30

9 times out of 10 those guys are using bikes so you have to think is it a distance that can be cycled while still keeping the food warm.

I don’t use Uber Eats either. I complained twice in a row that they had forgotten some items twice in a row and they accused me of trying to steal £2 worth of chips or whatever it was and threatened to ban me from the app. I screenshots the convo and one day when I have the energy I might send it to one of those consumer rights shows

eggsellentwork · 17/05/2022 08:37

I'm the same! We did a family trip to London recently and my parents asked me if we were going to get breakfast in the hotel. Nope! I'm ordering delivery of lovely local cafes every single day!
It was even worth the crumbs in the bed!

Ticksallboxes · 17/05/2022 08:42

The quality of the food has gone so far downhill since these companies started that I don't think you're missing much tbh.

I've ended up teaching myself to cook my favourite takeaways as we were so fed up of disappointing (and expensive) meals.

NightmareSlashDelightful · 17/05/2022 09:20

@Tilltheend99 Such a racket, isn’t it? Don’t get me started on Airbnb…

Unfortunately for my health and finances, I find the quality of takeaways near me has improved exponentially over the past five or so years. I don’t think it’s to do with delivery companies, but the explosion in food halls and markets.

I live about six miles from a big city, but no one delivers from there - the best takeaways are in the hipster areas a few miles away. Now, if I want a vegan Detroit-style pizza, for example, I have more than one option.

sashh · 17/05/2022 10:42

I have just had a look at mine, 55 available to deliver now, another 35 open later.

OP

Do you want to visit?

sashh · 17/05/2022 10:43

Sorry that was just eat.

MakeThingsRight · 17/05/2022 10:49

Your thighs will thank you! Mine are currently being very ungrateful and are giving zero thanks for my just-eat input to them.

On a serious note that is a pain. I used to live in a village, probably only 2 miles from a very large suburb. Could they manage to go that extra mile (see what I did there 🙄🤣 ) no clearly they couldn't.

I'm a lot closer to town now but there are some rough areas they refuse to go to.

MajesticallyAwkward · 17/05/2022 11:13

OP I live in a town with something like the 2nd highest takeaway:people ratio in the country. 4 different apps for ordering food and can get pretty much anything in half an hour... it's too tempting and I have no willpower.

My friend lives a village further north and has one takeaway they have to phone to order from and the walk to collect it 😵 or they order dominoes and the meet the driver in a car park a couple of miles down the road. Practically Stone Age!

sashh · 17/05/2022 11:49

Just waiting for my shepherd's pie to be delivered.

standoctor · 17/05/2022 11:52

OMG how dreadful
How can you survive like this
