I live 6 miles from a major British city and…

…we don’t have Deliveroo. Nor do we have Uber Eats. The Just Eat app tells me that I’m able to order a curry from a nearby town and…that’s it.

I LONG to order a kebab/burrito/Vietnamese/Thai/something delicious for dinner, but I’m stuck living in the 1980s.

Well the Chippy van parks up outside the Community Centre on a Thursday night so it’s only a 5 minute walk to fetch my fish and chips … that’s as good as it gets. Also 6 miles from a major city.

Or I can phone for a curry or a Chinese and fetch it, only 3 miles away. There is also a local pub that does takeaway roast dinners on a Sunday which I rather like (not delivery though!)

DPotter · 16/05/2022 23:35

4 miles outside Reading - no take away deliveries, no Uber, can't even get standard taxis to collect us but they will bring us home from the station, no buses and at least 1 mile walk to nearest bus stop, along roads with no lighting or pavements (I don't actually want street lighting, even so) and buses only one an hour anyway (with nothing between 7.20 and 9.20 in the mornings).
Dodgy broadband too.

Oh the joy of rural life

TimeToChangeItUpNow · 16/05/2022 23:36

We have to collect. Closest town 5 miles.

When we moved here (from London suburbs) I opened Uber and was shocked to see an empty map!!

We are in a village. I still haven't figured out how to get an actual taxi!

Mummyoflittledragon · 16/05/2022 23:38

Same, except even closer to the nearest city.

RampantIvy · 17/05/2022 06:36

You post asking for advice on your local Facebook page. I often see questions like this on our local Facebook pages. I use Facebook for local information it is an extremely useful resource.

BackflandedCondiment · 17/05/2022 06:48

Same here. No delivery options at all. The closest thing we have is a fish and chip van that comes round once a week!

milkysmum · 17/05/2022 06:50

I live live 3 miles from a large town and nothing will deliver to our village. We have a fish and chip shop in the village that is open Monday to Friday 4.30pm-6.30pm!

BalloonsAndWhistles · 17/05/2022 06:51

Having recently moved from a large city, I was amazed to find that my new (smaller) city doesn’t have Uber. I mean, come on??!!

BobbinThreadbare123 · 17/05/2022 06:52

I'm in Cumbria too @CatDogMonkeyPOW. We've got nothing on Just Eat either!

QuebecBagnet · 17/05/2022 06:53

Same here. I work in my local city and sometimes consider ordering a deliveroo for lunch just for the experience 😂

Pascha · 17/05/2022 06:54

Our local chippie (3.5miles) has just started doing deliveries on a Friday and Saturday. Shame its crap though. I'd still rather do a 10 mile round trip to the good one in the nearby town.

The Indian in the next village did lockdown deliveries but it obviously didn't pay very well for them cos they stopped soon after everything opened back up and they do well on collection only.

I don't think Deliveroo or Just Eat etc could make the business model work outside of big towns and cities really. The time and distance involved around rural areas would make lots of food unpalatable by the time it arrived.

I've never used Uber. We tried once to see if it was available anywhere locally. The only area within 20 miles at least is the small University city. If we ever need one we'd ring for a taxi the old fashioned way.

Newnormal99 · 17/05/2022 07:05

I have about 15 takeaways / restaurants within about a 5 minute walk. Chinese, Indian, Thai, pizza, chicken, fish & chips, kebab, burgers.

I do use delivery service but generally only just eat. I don't think they mark up the prices as much. I have been known to order McDonald's but they usually want £3.99 delivery fee if it's a small order which I refuse to pay.

As an aside it's now a bloody nightmare - the end of my road goes onto the main road which all the takeaways are on. All the delivery drivers double park at the end of the road to pick up and it can now be a nightmare to pull out.

Dearmariacountmein · 17/05/2022 07:09

The amount of judgement on this thread from those suggesting you could just cook yourself 🤦‍♀️

People suggesting doing this - you do realise most people who use take away apps can cook they just don’t fancy it?

@BelleTheBananas we live in a small town with no Deliveroo but a few of the local takeaways have online order and delivery options. Have you looked to see if that’s possible?

balalake · 17/05/2022 07:10

OP a good incentive to not have takeaways.

I expect that there are more important things you may not have, or will not have too soon, such as a bank or post office.

namechangeanonymous · 17/05/2022 07:11

I know of somebody who can order but their neighbour two houses down cannot.

I'm approximately a mile from a small rundown town and then about 20 either way from two cities and I have a reasonable delivery variety available.

Keladrythesaviour · 17/05/2022 07:13

We are 8 miles from a major city, and about 5/6 from multiple towns, Cotswoldsish. Absolutely nothing here either. We can get a takeaway)delivery from the local Indian and I think one Chinese delivers too if you buy some extortionate amount. I always get very annoyed at the McDonald's adverts who seem to suggest everyone can get McDelivery, yet 6.4miles (I just checked) is insurmountable.
In fairnes I don't actually want a McDonalds delivered! But I would like the option. Not enough to move out of my village and into suburbia though!

We haven’t got those either 🤷🏻‍♀️. Our only bank closed 4 years ago and the Post Office a year later.

Perfect excuse to learn to cook your favourite takeout meals!

We’ve been cooking all sorts of Chinese dishes - and sesame seed chicken was amazing! I do a few good curries, and naan bread is fairly easy and lovely and fresh!

I’ve also been testing a few Italian pasta dishes as well.

once you get the hang of it they are quite easy.

I can cook all our favourite takeaway meals. The point of a takeaway is that it’s for the times I don’t want to cook!

ReadyToMoveIt · 17/05/2022 07:22

Neverendingdust · 16/05/2022 22:19

Believe me, after you’ve seen the bikers with their deliveries bouncing around on their backs in filthy dirty backpacks you wouldn’t be ordering. Im in a city that’s swamped with them and I’d never order in a million years.

The food is in plastic containers.

carefullycourageous · 17/05/2022 07:24

You should complain to your MP and demand the government subsidise it in rural areas

ferneytorro · 17/05/2022 07:29

I was discussing this with my husband as there was a programme on about deliveroo. We are in Lancashire, suppose semi rural so no Uber eats , deliveroo etc but we also have never had a takeaway delivered, through choice as I think some curry houses do it. We ring up, order and then go and get it. It just never occurs to us (we are generally late adopters so perhaps when we are 70 we may get deliveries!).

Fizbosshoes · 17/05/2022 07:30

We are 15 miles from the nearest takeaway and have always done our own pick ups.

Is the food still hot when you get back?
We live about 5 miles from Macdonalds and sometimes I bring one home but I'm always a bit meh because it's not hot!

I've never ordered deliveroo or uber eats,Blush not sure if you get them where I am (not in the sticks) although I heard someone locally recommend its better(financially) for independent business to order direct from them, so we normally do that. We don't have many takeaways (maybe 3 or 4 a year) and usually collect.

TheMadGardener · 17/05/2022 07:31

I live in a market town in the darkest SW.

In 2019 we had American visitors. They started talking about ordering an Uber to go somewhere and wondered why we started laughing. Had to explain that Uber doesn't exist here.

Also no Deliveroo etc. But one good result of Covid is that previously no local eateries did home delivery. Now the Chinese, the pizza shop (not a chain one) and the pasty shop will all deliver to home. They started doing it during Covid and have decided to continue as we locals are making it worth their while!

Hbh17 · 17/05/2022 07:35

I live in the middle of a city that has all these companies but I have never ordered a takeaway - I really don't want lukewarm cheap food that has been joggled about on the back of a bike! I'd much rather go to eat in a proper restaurant.
