I live 6 miles from a major British city and…

…we don’t have Deliveroo. Nor do we have Uber Eats. The Just Eat app tells me that I’m able to order a curry from a nearby town and…that’s it.

I LONG to order a kebab/burrito/Vietnamese/Thai/something delicious for dinner, but I’m stuck living in the 1980s.

You’re saving a lot of money OP. Since moving out of Deliveroo Central to the sticks we are now 🙀🙀at how much we used to spend!!

miss it though on occasion 😏

HundredMilesAnHour · 16/05/2022 21:52

To give a slightly different perspective, I live in inner London and when I just checked Deliveroo after reading this thread, I have 2,922 places that will deliver to me right now. That blows even my mind - and that's just from one app.

cherrypiepie · 16/05/2022 21:58

@Tee20x we try to have just one takeaway a month so it is the choice that is mind blowing to me.

we have pizza /kebab delivery and Chinese takeaway In The village, nearest Indian from the market town and maccies kfc Burger King and subway 10ish minute drive.

Obviously we do have take away a and drive to collect them but I don't think g that is OPs point.

BelleTheBananas · 16/05/2022 22:11

Dominoes often leave us a leaflet…they don’t deliver to our area Grin

I used to live in Zone 2 but this was in the days before smartphones/takeaway apps. I mean, you could always pick something up on your way home from the tube.

We don’t even have a village shop anymore. We’re in the SE, unbelievably.

My point I suppose is that I’ve seen MNers talking about the ‘bad old days’ when you had to <gasp> USE A TELEPHONE to order a takeaway. Which is what I still have to do Grin

I lived in the suburbs of a city of 200,000 people - but apparently we were “remote and rural” and therefore didn’t get deliveries. Go figure.

Neverendingdust · 16/05/2022 22:19

Believe me, after you’ve seen the bikers with their deliveries bouncing around on their backs in filthy dirty backpacks you wouldn’t be ordering. Im in a city that’s swamped with them and I’d never order in a million years.

We live in the middle of a triangle between 3 towns - no idea of their populations, but they're decent size - one is the county town. All 3 towns are well served by Deliveroo, Just Eat and Uber Eats, but until a couple of weeks ago none of them would deliver to here - within 2 miles of the centre of all 3 towns!

We have always just ordered takeaway by phone and then go and collect it. It never seemed like a big hassle. And then we thought we'd give Deliveroo a go - from ordering from our favourite local place to it arriving at the door was 20 minutes (and we could sit here with a glass of wine whilst watching the driver move along the map) - fabulous!

I'm not sure how often we'll use it - we always order from independent places, and I know they pay a huge commission to the delivery apps. I'd rather they kept their money themselves, so unless we really can't go and collect (or really can't be bothered) then we'll probably still collect. But it's nice to have the option finally.

Well not to piss you off or owt, but I can see a good chippy from my driveway and the closest pizza place gets here so quickly for delivery coz I'm too lazy to walk round that the cheese will take the roof of your mouth off Grin

DorritLittle · 16/05/2022 22:29

We can get deliveroo but my DH calls and collects anyway!

bloodywhitecat · 16/05/2022 22:30

I'd love a takeaway now and again but no-one delivers here and with two young children going and collecting isn't really an option. I do miss a good Chinese or Indian. When DH was alive I did bedtime and he'd collect the meal then make me a gin when he got back. It is one of the minus points about rural living I suppose.

AngelicaSchuylerAndHerSisters · 16/05/2022 22:30

I live in a large village 12 miles from Glasgow. Nothing delivers here at all! There’s a subway, Dominos, Pizza Hit, chippies, Greggs, McD’s, multiple Chinese, Thai and Indian restaurants a few miles away.

AllThatFancyPaintsAsFair · 16/05/2022 22:34

Tee20x · 16/05/2022 21:50

How odd!! I've never really thought about this - to those of you who can't get Uber/Deliveroo, does that encourage you to try and cook takeaways to recreate them?

Tbh these apps just suck money out of you & im guilty of ordering Starbucks instead of walking for 10 mins.

No, I cook normal meals and if we ever do have a takaway I go and pick it up I literally can't remember ever having food delivered

The concept of someone bringinga coffee is bizarre to me.

bedsidetab · 16/05/2022 22:34

You’re not missing anything. I’ve tried deliveroo twice; both times the food was cold when it arrived.

I think the apps are amazing, I had Wagamama's yesterday & small Sainsbury's shop via another app today.

Ragwort · 16/05/2022 22:40

Nothing here either, can't even get a taxi after 9pm Grin. We are actually a tourist destination town Hmm ... I overheard some visitors saying 'we'll just get an Uber' ... I thought 'no, you won't' Grin Grin. The differences between city and rural (even small town) living is really quite striking.

Piemam · 16/05/2022 22:45

Same! Less than 5 miles to a major massive city centre and no Deliveroo! So rubbish.

Booboobibles · 16/05/2022 22:47

It’s so expensive though. A takeaway from local Chinese is about £17 for two and anything from Deliveroo is at least £30.

And why do people order food from Subway?! It’s just a sandwich on rubbish bread!

Saladd0dger · 16/05/2022 22:49

Non of thst here either. We have the choice of chip shop, kebab, Chinese or Indian.

TenoringBehind · 16/05/2022 22:53

Same here. 6 miles from nearest town, 12 miles from two cities. No takeaways that deliver at all, Uber isn’t a thing, and taxis are barely an option either (£80 one way from nearest city).

Manekinek0 · 16/05/2022 23:03

Same but I try to think about the money and calories saved!

RampantIvy · 16/05/2022 23:07

We can get Dominoes and some Just Eat takeaways, but as they have to drive over 6 miles to us the food is never hot. We don't get any other food delivered and we don't have Uber. Unfortunately most of the local taxi drivers have gone over to Uber so taxis are as rare as hen's teeth round here.

We rarely eat takeaways these days as the portion sizes are too big for us now (old gimmers), so it isn't something that we miss.

Threetulips · 16/05/2022 23:12

Perfect excuse to learn to cook your favourite takeout meals!

We’ve been cooking all sorts of Chinese dishes - and sesame seed chicken was amazing! I do a few good curries, and naan bread is fairly easy and lovely and fresh!

I’ve also been testing a few Italian pasta dishes as well.

once you get the hang of it they are quite easy.

RampantIvy · 16/05/2022 23:17

I cook a lot of ethnic food. We had a satay chicken curry tonight.
