SatinHeart · 11/05/2022 13:17

I (and pretty much everyone I've met) say 'broccol-ee'

PILs say 'broccol-eye'. I think my grandaprents used to as well.

Who is actually right? Is it an age thing?

I only ever heard John Cleese say 'broccoleye' in aMonty Python sketch about funerals...!

Plump82 · 11/05/2022 13:19

I say broccol-ee.
Annoyingly my husband says brock-ly and it infuriates me 😀

Boood · 11/05/2022 13:22

Your husband is wrong. Such a useful sentence in so many contexts.

XenoBitch · 11/05/2022 13:22

Is there a regional dialect coming in to play here at all? I say broccol ee but when I say broccol eye it sounds sort of Midlands ish to me.

chickyellowcute · 11/05/2022 13:23

Brocco-lye seems to be a brum adjacent thing, I used to live in an area close to it where people said that

I'm southern and say brocco-lee

Pieceofpurplesky · 11/05/2022 13:24

My midlands friend says brocoleye

Broke-lee for Australian English then. I’ve never heard that pronunciation before. But also can’t think when I’ve spoken to an Australian about broccoli.

mummyh2016 · 11/05/2022 13:29

I'm West Midlands and it's definitely with an 'ee', 'eye' is not a thing.

nearlyspringyay · 11/05/2022 13:30

eyesandearsandamouth · 11/05/2022 13:31

It’s clearly unreasonable behaviour.
