SatinHeart · 11/05/2022 13:17

I (and pretty much everyone I've met) say 'broccol-ee'

PILs say 'broccol-eye'. I think my grandaprents used to as well.

Who is actually right? Is it an age thing?

I used to know a posh old couple who said brocco-lye.

Ah, then I wonder if it's a bit of a Hyacinth Bucket type thing

I don’t think the Irish agree with the people on the island of Great Britain on the pronunciation of primark.

it’s a controversial topic. Very.

In Wales I've heard both Pree-mark and Pr-I-mark (I say Pree-mark).

Anyway, how TF did someone manage to get deleted on a thread about broccoli?

stuntbubbles · 11/05/2022 17:32

Primark themselves say it’s Pr-eye-mark!

fluffiphlox · 11/05/2022 17:33

Spelled here at the local market as ‘brokley’ but I think they might be having a laugh.

I used to know a posh old couple who said brocco-lye.

They may have been my parents.

But they would have followed up by offering you one tiny floret and asking if you'd like a broccolus.

Snowiscold · 11/05/2022 17:38

Three distinct syllables - the last ending in an ee sound.

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 11/05/2022 18:03

@stuntbubbles they're quite simply wrong. Grin

SoggyPaper · 11/05/2022 13:47

It’s clearly unreasonable behaviour.

Extremely unreasonable but for him it's one of many words he says wrong. One day I'm going to flip!

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 11/05/2022 18:42

Brockle-trees.

Started by a young dc and it’s stuck.

StCharlotte · 11/05/2022 18:48

VintageGibbon · 11/05/2022 15:58

I'm from Surrey. We pronounce it Romanesco. Grin

😃

My proud Londoner MIL says broccolye but then she says bargayne and mountayne, God love her.

We're not far from Ardingly which is pronounced Ardinglye. I can't bear it!

ErrolTheDragon · 11/05/2022 18:54

VintageGibbon · 11/05/2022 15:58

I'm from Surrey. We pronounce it Romanesco. Grin

That's the variant which we pronounce 'fractal veg'.
'Normal' broccoli is calabrese, I suppose, if you want to be precise?

LowlandLucky · 11/05/2022 19:21

Little trees is much easier

YorkshireDude · 11/05/2022 19:24

brock-o-lee

BertieBotts · 11/05/2022 19:28

EE ending.

The only person I know who says broccol-eye is my grandad and he's 95.

BertieBotts · 11/05/2022 19:30

StressyMcStressFace · 11/05/2022 14:51

Do they pronounce microwave "mee-crow-wa-vay"?

No, don't be silly. A microwave is a poptyping.

SpeedofaSloth · 11/05/2022 19:33

Boood · 11/05/2022 13:22

Your husband is wrong. Such a useful sentence in so many contexts.

I say Brok-lee. Never heard it said as Broke-lee in Australia ever.

Worked for Birdseye in Australia (Victoria) and they definitely pronounced it broco-lye.

depression941 · 11/05/2022 19:35

Brocco(lay) Scottish and I've never heard it pronounced any other way Grin

merryhouse · 11/05/2022 19:45

oooh @StCharlotte my MIL says moun-tayne as well! I thought it was just her Grin

Throwing a cat among the pigeons, when I was younger I used to say bruCOLly (but I'm pretty sure my sisters used to tell me not to).

Longdistance · 11/05/2022 19:48

My mil says broccol eye. Really gets on my nerves. I set broccolee and so does everyone else I know.

Gwenhwyfar · 11/05/2022 19:52

Am I the only one who says brockley then ie as two syllables and not three.

Gwenhwyfar · 11/05/2022 19:54

Ok so I've RTFT now and I'm not the only one who drops the 'o' in the middle.

"I don’t think the Irish agree with the people on the island of Great Britain on the pronunciation of primark."

I thought it was called Pennies over there. It can be Pree-mark in GB too.

GreyCarpet · 11/05/2022 20:00

FreezerBird · 11/05/2022 17:37

That's the sort of thing I say to my children for the sole purpose of securing a 🙄🙄🙄

🤣

And, fwiw, I'm West Mids and have only ever heard 'ee'. Never heard anyone say 'eye'.

Made me laugh far harder than it should.

But yes. Broc-o-Lee.
