I (and pretty much everyone I've met) say 'broccol-ee'

PILs say 'broccol-eye'. I think my grandaprents used to as well.

Who is actually right? Is it an age thing?

SatinHeart · 11/05/2022 14:40

Interesting! PILs and my grandparents both from SE England (as am I) so I don't think there's any regional variation going on to expain it.

This is turning my stomach as I read on here a few weeks ago that broccoli and cauliflower have worms in them they you cannot see. Now I will never eat it again so cannot help with the pronunciation sorry to go off piste

Enb76 · 11/05/2022 14:56

Broc-lee in public but actually, broc-o-lie in a pretend Dudley accent at home.

I say broccol-ee.
Annoyingly my husband says brock-ly and it infuriates me 😀

Which is fine if he wants to steam a leafy suburb of South London for dinner.

RedRec · 11/05/2022 16:31

The purple version was 'purple sprouting broccolow' to my Norfolk grandparents.

stuntbubbles · 11/05/2022 16:31

Brocco-lee. It’s from the Italian, so the I is like piano, not Primark. And came over after the great vowel shift so we kept the “ee” sound.

I don’t think the Irish agree with the people on the island of Great Britain on the pronunciation of primark.

it’s a controversial topic. Very.
