How far would you walk to a bar / restaurant from your house?

For example if a bar or restaurant was 10/20/30 mins’ walk from your home - would you walk it?

How far of a walk would it have to be for you to decide to get a taxi instead?

Used to sometimes walk home from Reading town centre after clubbing or pubbing, over eight miles. Sometimes cycled it.

There's more night trains these days, luckily.

Magicfeet11 · 06/05/2022 23:33

Anything up to 45 minutes I'd walk unless it was very late or I was in a hurry etc...

Regularsizedrudy · 06/05/2022 23:34

i would walk up to 30 mins if the weather was okay

HumourReplacementTherapy · 06/05/2022 23:34

It's not the walk there that's the problem GrinGin

2pinkginsplease · 06/05/2022 23:36

Furthest I’d walk depends on what shoes I’m wearing, heels then it’s probably about 10Mins and flat shoes I’d walk 30 mins.

User6761 · 06/05/2022 23:36

These days, I'd walk up to 20-30 mins without thinking about it. Anything longer I'd probably get the bus. In my younger days I walked far more. Rarely ever get taxis - like once a year!

mocktail · 06/05/2022 23:39

I'd definitely walk 20 minutes. Much over 30 and I'd probably drive or get a taxi. It depends really on time of the evening, how much time I've got spare, whether it's raining etc.

MintJulia · 06/05/2022 23:44

Our two locals are 2 miles and 4 miles. The closer one is easy anytime, the further one is better for Sunday lunch. It's a long walk at night (no street lights), better with company and not fun without a torch.

Taxis round here are for getting to airports. 😊

Jalepenojello · 06/05/2022 23:45

30 minutes, walk it. I’d do twice that when I was younger

bellsbuss · 06/05/2022 23:46

Depends on footwear

ZarquonsSandals · 06/05/2022 23:46

Up to 45 minutes. Depending on how much I had eaten/drunk I might get a taxi back.
Am meeting friends for a meal next week, and it's easily a 30 minute walk for me to get there, but mostly through open spaces and a park, which makes it very pleasant.

watcherintherye · 06/05/2022 23:47

It takes us 25/30 mins to walk into our city centre, so have often done that. Any further, we usually drive.

TooBigForMyBoots · 06/05/2022 23:48

I'd walk up to 30minutes return. An hour+ if I could get a taxi back and the walk was worth it.

OhLordyWhatNow · 06/05/2022 23:48

There are no bars or pubs within 20 minutes walking distance of where I live.

So... yes, 30 minutes is a reasonable walking distance.

Haudyourwheesht · 06/05/2022 23:50

30-40 mins if it's not raining. Otherwise I'd get the bus or a train. Taxis unreliable and expensive so I never rely on them.

Zazdar · 06/05/2022 23:53

We sometimes walk to the pub (and back) which is three miles away. I have no idea how long it takes.

I have never considered a taxi, although we do sometimes use bikes.

withiceplease · 06/05/2022 23:55

I walk 5k to middle of city if nice weather for cinema or restaurant. I just adjust my clothes so I can wear smart trainers if fancier restaurant.
Walk 4k round trip after work with DH to bar regularly when nice weather

Depends on footwear

Actually yes.

With walkable shoes, about 30 minutes.

Antarcticant · 07/05/2022 00:01

If it's there and back, 30 mins. Would go to an hour for walk there, taxi back.

Zazdar · 07/05/2022 00:12

With walkable shoes, about 30 minutes.

I wear sensible shoes for the walk and change them when I get there.

Kite22 · 07/05/2022 00:14

Depends on lots of things
Mostly how much time I had, but also what the dress code was (trainers - yes, heels-no)....what the weather was doing....what the walk was like / what is passed through.....who I was with..... if I was in credit in favours to get someone else to drop me.......what else I'd been doing that day......

Like others, it wouldn't occur to me to get a taxi. I'd get the bus or train, or, as I said get one of my dc, or my dh to drop me (as I would do for them occasionally).

BarbaraofSeville · 07/05/2022 03:31

What @Kite22 said.

But here there isn't usually a convenient bus/train option and a taxi won't be much more anyway and could well be cheaper if there's 2 or more people.

I'd probably walk there and get a taxi back unless it's literally 5/10 mins walk and I'd feel safe doing it, which I might not if it's dark.

Snowiscold · 07/05/2022 03:36

I would never get a taxi. It wouldn’t occur to me. I’d get a bus. 30 mins’ walk sounds OK, in theory.

Sunnytwobridges · 07/05/2022 03:49

15 mins or so

OutlookStalking · 07/05/2022 03:52

Surprised at the "never get a taxi" people. Is there a reason for that? Can be a similarish price to a bus for a shortish journey if 2 people, and cheaper if there are more.

I don't like walking at night, so whereas I would walk to a daytime even I wouldn't for a night out unless 10mins or so. But I don't really drink so would probably drive/share lifts in real life. Or a taxi...
