How far would you walk to a bar / restaurant from your house?

Recaffe · 06/05/2022 23:31

For example if a bar or restaurant was 10/20/30 mins’ walk from your home - would you walk it?

How far of a walk would it have to be for you to decide to get a taxi instead?

When we lived in a city it was about a 30min walk to downtown. We did it almost weekly for nights out. Never got a taxin

BarbaraofSeville · 07/05/2022 04:01

Maybe they're somewhere where buses are frequent and cheap or they have a travel card.

Here it's at least ÂŁ3 however short the journey and might be 30 to 60 mins before there's one due, plus nothing at all after about 10 pm so it's a different decision to a bus that comes every 5-10 minutes and costs ÂŁ1.50.

Snowiscold · 07/05/2022 04:02

A bus would always be much, much cheaper than a taxi, where I am, at least. Eg, last taxi I took was ÂŁ15. Bus fare for the same trip would be ÂŁ1.50.

OutlookStalking · 07/05/2022 04:37

Ah that's interesting. 20-30min walk so about a mile/quick taxi would never be ÂŁ15 here!

Areas vary so much. I wouldnt want to catch a bus at night where I live but have done in busier areas!

ImplementingTheDennisSystem · 07/05/2022 04:43

40 mins. Any longer and I wouldn't get a taxi, I'd just choose another restaurant!

ShadowPuppets · 07/05/2022 04:52

Town is 30 mins walk from our house and I would always walk in and bus or taxi back unless it was pissing it down.

That said my parents and my sister (who live in the same town) think I’m mad and they wouldn’t dream of walking in! I think part of it is that until recently we lived in London and the idea of driving or taking public transport along a road for two miles seems really silly as often it wouldn’t be any quicker than just walking it.

Autienotnaughtie · 07/05/2022 05:24

Night out dressed up 15min tops. Appropriately dressed anything upto a couple of hours!

Cervinia · 07/05/2022 05:31

A Mile to a restaurant on an evening when I’m dressed up and don’t want to get there a bit sweaty or creased.

to a pub restaurant during the day, after a hike so 7 miles or more.

jay55 · 07/05/2022 05:33

I live a 10 min walk to the tube, and there are 2 bars between home and the tube.

I'd not think of doing a 30min walk to dinner living here. But have done when living in a city with less good public transport.

willowstar · 07/05/2022 05:58

@OutlookStalking I live in a small market town in Norfolk...taxis have to be booked days in advance, or a week or so for weekends.so for us they are never an option unless something very well planned. Buses go by/through a couple of times a day, never at night.

Svara · 07/05/2022 06:04

Summer evening with company, up to an hour/three miles. Longer than that and I would drive and not drink. I've never called my own taxi, always something I viewed as unaffordable.

Svara · 07/05/2022 06:09

OutlookStalking · 07/05/2022 03:52

Surprised at the "never get a taxi" people. Is there a reason for that? Can be a similarish price to a bus for a shortish journey if 2 people, and cheaper if there are more.

I don't like walking at night, so whereas I would walk to a daytime even I wouldn't for a night out unless 10mins or so. But I don't really drink so would probably drive/share lifts in real life. Or a taxi...

I usually avoid the bus for less than a hour's walk, they are never on time so I'd be waiting at a bus stop in the dark anyway. I'd rather be walking than waiting.

Camomila · 07/05/2022 06:10

Half an hour/45mins...that's how long it takes to get to town from my parents house. I'd usually walk to save the bus fare when I was younger. I'd still do it now if It was the Sunday bus service and I didn't want to be late.

KatherineJaneway · 07/05/2022 06:14

Would depend on other factors; weather, what else I was doing that day, is it not near public transport etc.

PurBal · 07/05/2022 06:16

Up to an hour. Occasionally get a taxi home, no bus though, there are like 3 a day

Doingmybest12 · 07/05/2022 06:19

It depends on other factors other than the distance.
What sort of venue , ie what clothes are needed.
Weather.
Time available
Nice walk, safe walk
Traffic
How late will we leave to come back
Any walking partners or alone
Time of year, is the walk part of the evening
Parking issues or not
Is anyone offering a lift back.
Do I want to roll up looking/feeling like I've had a good walk
Dog friendly
Only way to be able to have drink.
Etc

motogirl · 07/05/2022 06:32

It's 20 mins walk from one of our frequent haunts, good luck if you want a taxi - they are as rare as hens teeth, you need to prebook here, as in a week before

motogirl · 07/05/2022 06:34

Ps buses are non existent that late

ivykaty44 · 07/05/2022 06:38

50% of car journeys are under 2 miles

62% of all journeys are by car either as passenger or driver

68% of trips in car are under 5 minutes

23% of journeys in cars are under 1 mile

people don’t seem to walk for transport

CornishGem1975 · 07/05/2022 06:46

Up to an hour, we do it quite regularly.

LizzeyBenett · 07/05/2022 06:48

I'd walk 3k maybe more if in flats but heels forget about it taxi all the way

Where are those stats from and how many of those 1 to 2 mile trips are to the grocery shop, so people take the car to bring shopping home?

Or are part of a longer journey that would be too time consuming to walk, eg drop children at childcare or school on the way to work.

See that may be the average but it's not how I live at all. Work is 7 miles (10 journeys a week) family 12 and 34 miles (less often), only a mile for shopping twice a week, but all other short journeys I walk.

TenoringBehind · 07/05/2022 06:59

I’d never get a taxi. Really expensive here (rural area so they have to come from the nearest town) and I don’t like the idea of going in a car with a stranger,

I would walk if it was on safe roads (non rural with pavements) for up to 45 minutes. Otherwise I’d drive. Realistically, given where we live, driving is the only option.

Pourmeanotherwine · 07/05/2022 07:00

We have a lot of restaurants within 30 mins walk, so normally choose one of those. If i was meeting friends further than 30 mins walk Id cycle or drive.
