How far would you walk to a bar / restaurant from your house?

For example if a bar or restaurant was 10/20/30 mins’ walk from your home - would you walk it?

How far of a walk would it have to be for you to decide to get a taxi instead?

I have 4 really good restaurants within 5 minute walking distance and 3 more within 10. So I’m rather spoilt for choice.

I live a 20 minute walk from the city centre and we always get a taxi or bus in for dinner.

Where are those stats from and how many of those 1 to 2 mile trips are to the grocery shop, so people take the car to bring shopping home?

Or are part of a longer journey that would be too time consuming to walk, eg drop children at childcare or school on the way to work.

Yes, I'd like to know what counts. If I stop at the petrol station or supermarket half a mile from home is that another journey even though it's on my way?

BarbaraofSeville · 07/05/2022 07:10

Cycling is a good way to do a shortish journey that would take too long to walk, but you would obviously need a bike, somewhere you could leave it at the destination, where you are likely to find it still there when you return, and space to keep it at home too.

I have a bike but it's a very nice electric mountain bike and while it would also be more than suitable of making a 30 to 60 minute walk into a 10 minute cycle, there's no way I'm leaving it chained to a lamppost outside a restaurant.

UnicornMadeOfPinkGlitter · 07/05/2022 07:13

A lot of factors to consider. Younger days I would walk home from town. Easily an hours walk. Probably more whilst drunk as not walking in a straight line.
now in my 40’s maybe 20-30 minutes. Again different factors. Could my son pick me up, or one of the others husbands sometimes will pick up people enroute, can I afford a taxi, is the bus running. Etc etc.

Chaoslatte · 07/05/2022 07:19

I’d walk up to 40 minutes. I only get a taxi if I’m on my own and it’s after 10pm.

Oblomov22 · 07/05/2022 07:26

20 minutes. Or get. Cab.

Bretonbear · 07/05/2022 07:37

30 mins

Surprised at the "never get a taxi" people. Is there a reason for that? Can be a similarish price to a bus for a shortish journey if 2 people, and cheaper if there are more.

I don't like walking at night, so whereas I would walk to a daytime even I wouldn't for a night out unless 10mins or so. But I don't really drink so would probably drive/share lifts in real life. Or a taxi...

...

Taxi prices depend on the rates your local authority have set.

A 4 mile journey at 10pm here would cost about £17.

There are no buses at that time of night they stop at 7pm and the price is £5 return for that 4 mile journey.

Chewbecca · 07/05/2022 11:04

I have a lot of places within a 30min walk & happy to walk to those (if dry).

Another fave is about 50 mins walk away & we take a cab there, it costs about £8. No bus route.

ALWAYS wear comfy shoes!!

ifonly4 · 07/05/2022 11:07

We regularly walk 30 mins to two nearby pubs - both walks are nice though whih makes it a pleasant trip out whatever the time of year.

noborisno · 07/05/2022 11:25

It just depends on whether I have cash spare for a taxi and wish to treat myself. Whether I feel like a walk or feel I need the exercise, and then if I'm going to get sweaty on the way.

I would do a 30 minute walk no problem but only if I had trainers on. If I had anything but trainers this walk would always be a cab so I didn't feel flustered... unless I didn't have spare money to be throwing around on cabs.

I got a cab from the shops today cause I had spare cash.

DinosaurOfFire · 07/05/2022 11:29

I'd walk about 30 minutes, and get a bus home- the night buses are £1.50 one way after 7pm here.

bigbluebus · 07/05/2022 11:37

We live in a village with no pub. We often walk 30 mins to the nearest pub down a country road and then across fields (all gated rather than stiles). We tend to go in the daytime though.
We also walk 20 mins down the country road to the station to catch the train to town (30 mins ride away) to go to bars and restaurants. We take torches to walk back from the station. Always need to wear decent footwear though - wouldn't do it in heels!

Waxonwaxoff0 · 07/05/2022 11:39

I have no car so I'm used to lots of walking. If it was dry weather and daytime I'd happily walk around 45 minutes there and back. I live in a town with a few bars and restaurants, I'm a 10 minute walk from the town centre. The nearest big city is 30 minutes on the bus and there are night buses so I usually get the bus rather than a taxi. Bus stop is a 6 minute walk from my house.

ChairOfInvisibleStudies · 07/05/2022 11:44

Depends on the dress code and the weather - posh or pouring with rain I'd not want to walk far. Casual and reasonable weather I'd definitely walk up to 45 minutes, maybe longer if the walk itself was particularly pleasant.

Geranium1984 · 07/05/2022 12:18

20 mins to local restaurants on a regular basis. If it's a really nice evening we would walk further but might get a taxi for the return journey.

PanettoneMoly · 07/05/2022 12:43

Happily walk 20-30 mins to a restaurant or pub. Our nice local is a 20 min walk and think nothing of it. If I had to walk in heels though, all bets are off, however I’m used to commuting in a pair of flats then whipping a set of heels out of my bag on arrival.

TheCanyon · 07/05/2022 12:47

All our twins pubs and restaurants are within 11-13 minutes of home. So I guess that's how far I would walk. Probably get a taxi home though.

KateMcCallister · 07/05/2022 12:48

The 10 min walk home from town seems to take about 30 mins when I'm pissed 😂🙈

So on that note, 15 mins tops 😬

Recaffe · 07/05/2022 15:08

Thanks all. We have offered on a property and one of the compromises that we’ve had to make is that it’s a touch further out of the centre than we had ideally wanted.

I don’t think we’ll have much money spare for a hectic social life anyway once we’ve moved it but it’s good to see that the new walking distance seems to be reasonable! Smile

An Uber for a short-ish journey here is cheaper than two bus fares. And for a slightly longer journey it’s just a few £ more and worth that for the convenience of being door to door.

In my case, it just wouldn't occur to me. I've only ever been in about 6 taxis in my life, it just isn't something that really comes on to my radar.
I'm pretty sure that taxi's are a lot more expensive than the bus for 2 people here though.
In my dd's case - she has a bus pass so any extra journeys are considered free, so, compared to paying out for a taxi it is a no-brainer when you are on a limited budget.

I'd like to know how they got the stats for IvyKate's figures about the journeys too. Apart from the obvious, of not being able to count all the journeys that are walked, how does it count a day like today, where I have done 7 journeys so far, most of which would be under two miles, but in total would add up to a heck of a lot of walking, even before taking into account I couldn't have carried what I was taking on one of them.

No Uber and no busses where I live, so it’s walk or bike. Or drive if somebody is happy to stick to soft drinks.

gothereagain · 07/05/2022 19:18

Comfortable flats? Nice/ dry weather? Then 45minutes, maybe longer home. Rain or high heels maybe 10 minutes.

ImInStealthMode · 07/05/2022 19:19

Our town centre is a 15/20 minute walk from our flat so we most often walk in for a night out, but depending which shoes I'm wearing or how lazy we are sometimes get a taxi home.
