Please suggest me a European city for a weekend away with a (girl)friend

As the title says, I'm after ideas for a destination, in Europe, for a weekend away with a girlfriend. We have already done a few places (Lisbon, Barcelona, Madrid, Marrakesh, Munich, Ibiza, Reykjavik, Paris, and a few others) and are a bit stuck for ideas. We would like to be able to rely on public transport and taxis, so nothing too remote. I'm thinking Dublin would be nice. We like walking around, experiencing a few local things, shopping, but no museums. Any recommendations please?

I've always fancied Palma, on Majorca. Never been but have heard good things

Florence is beautiful this time of year and great food. Good music and art, too, obvs

ConsuelaHammock · 05/05/2022 15:47

Amsterdam is lovely and has an excellent tram service.

Dynamicsloth · 05/05/2022 15:49

The Hague has great shops and also the seaside at Scheveningen (if weather permits). Short tram ride to Delft as well which is pretty.

Have to been to Berlin? Loved it there.

Dynamicsloth · 05/05/2022 15:50

Budapest and Bergen are next on my list.

Budapest is lovely for a trip with a friend. Beautiful city to stroll around, so much to see. Excellent public transport connections, a weekly unlimited ticket for metro/tram/bus citywide is about £10, less for 24/72h. There is a decent taxi app like Uber called Bolt. Gorgeous thermal baths to enjoy and lots of excellent restaurants. It's also currently even cheaper than usual as the Forint has fallen dramatically against £.

Prague is lovely

Berlin is amazing, so much history and things to do.

LaBellina · 05/05/2022 15:55

Berlin, Napoli and Antwerp are my favorites that aren’t on your list yet. All of them are beautiful and old cities with lots of things to do and see and what they have in common that they have a bit of a raw edge to them. Antwerp and esspecially Napoli because they’re harbor cities, Berlin because of the tumultuous history of the city. They’re also quite affordable but be very cautious of petty crime if you choose to go to Napoli.

Therealpink · 05/05/2022 15:55

You can’t beat Rome!

LaBellina · 05/05/2022 15:57

Amsterdam is overpriced, overcrowded with tourists and dirty. Better and cheaper options that are also relatively close to Amsterdam are Utrecht and The Hague.

If Ireland, Cork or Galway is nicer than Dublin.

emmathedilemma · 05/05/2022 15:58

Another vote for Budapest!
I don't think Dublin is a particularly pretty city for "wandering" and a lot of the shops are similar to what we've got at home. It's also really expensive.
On home turf but Edinburgh is nice for that sort of weekend and Belfast is very interesting.

Copenhagen

I always recommend Funchal on threads like this, it's an absolutely brilliant place for 3/4 nights. A little further than most of the suggestions but definitely worth it. Its a great, compact city with loads to do - in 4 days there i saw Whales and Dolphins on a catamaran, took a cable car up a hill and tobogganed back down, went to a terrifying glass view platform, had afternoon tea at Reids Palace, visited where Churchill retired to to paint, ate fabulous food, drank too much poncha and found some brilliant rooftop bars.

fruitbrewhaha · 05/05/2022 16:04

Another vote for Berlin. We did a walking tour there which was fascinating.

bakermummy21 · 05/05/2022 16:08

Dubrovnik in Croatia is on our list

caringcarer · 05/05/2022 16:08

Saltzberg. Go on the boats that waltz along the river. Trick gardens. Lots of castles.

iggybop · 05/05/2022 16:09

Budapest?

user1497787065 · 05/05/2022 16:10

Palma is lovely and so is Seville. Both a short easy bus ride from the airport.

iggybop · 05/05/2022 16:10

Oh yes, Seville!

hellcatspanglelalala · 05/05/2022 16:10

Porto is lovely, very easy to get to the city centre by metro and is pretty compact too.

Malaga is great, also an easy trip from the airport by train and easy to get around when you're there. If you like the beach for a day you can catch a bus or train to one of the resorts along the coast.

Krakow - best city break I've ever been on
