Please suggest me a European city for a weekend away with a (girl)friend

As the title says, I'm after ideas for a destination, in Europe, for a weekend away with a girlfriend. We have already done a few places (Lisbon, Barcelona, Madrid, Marrakesh, Munich, Ibiza, Reykjavik, Paris, and a few others) and are a bit stuck for ideas. We would like to be able to rely on public transport and taxis, so nothing too remote. I'm thinking Dublin would be nice. We like walking around, experiencing a few local things, shopping, but no museums. Any recommendations please?

Vienna

Berlin and Granada are both great.
Berlin for history and great bars.
Granada for the Alhambra, street life and warmth.

Tallinn is a beautiful, medieval, walled city. Bordeaux is lovely too.

TheDogsMother · 05/05/2022 16:38

I second Seville, Palma, Dubrovnik. Also Valetta is lovely, Nice, Venice, Bologna, Porto.

motogirl · 05/05/2022 16:41

Budapest, Rome, Taormina?

For a girl's trip I'd say Budapest. The thermal spas, lovely restaurants, great nightlife and cheaper luxury hotels

As another poster said, I'd go for Galway over Dublin for a city break, much nicer and better cultural irish experience

Based on your criteria and where you’ve already been I’d also say Budapest. Public transport is excellent and it’s lovely to go to one of the baths (I’d say the Gellert Baths and get a massage while you’re there).

Whatwouldnanado · 05/05/2022 16:46

Vienna, Saltzburg, Belfast is fun too.

Fleur405 · 05/05/2022 16:49

also San Sebastián is pretty amazing if you like Spanish food!

I'd recommend Budapest, Berlin and Ljublijana is nice - a small city but good if you only have a 2/3 days.

DisforDarkChocolate · 05/05/2022 17:06

Copenhagen has everything. Its really easy to get to from the airport too. Very safe feeling. Great food.

Crikeyalmighty · 05/05/2022 17:13

I live in Copenhagen- brilliant city- but expensive from the tourist angle of food and drink.

Starisnotanumber · 05/05/2022 17:23

First thing to do is make shortlist then check out local airport for flights using skyscanner or similar unless you live near a major airport this is likely to reduce options.
No point getting excited about a city if you can't get there without a long journey in UK.
If you decide on bruges which sounds your sort of place you can use ryanair to Brussels charleroi and get a bus transfer direct

If the weather is nice I'd usually prefer somewhere by the sea so Stockholm, Riga, Gdansk, Porto in that order would be in my top previous trips. Other suggestions would be Berlin, Gent, . Podgorica is on my to go to next list..Sofia is fabulous but hard to manage cabs or public transport due to the language barrier, we mostly walked.

Citylady88 · 05/05/2022 17:56

Toulouse is also fabulous

HowIsItMarchAlready · 05/05/2022 18:19

Thank you very much for all the suggestions. We have done (together or with other people) most of them but there are a couple we've never been to before, including Funchal and Krakow. We will have a look at the ones we have missed to date, and see which one takes our fancy the most!

Krakow is incredible, so much to see and do, the tram is very cheap and easy to figure out once you've done it a few times!

MrsDThomas · 05/05/2022 19:42

Budapest! Loved it. Not cheap but very very reasonable. Thermal baths, Danube hour cruise, hop on/off bus, castle… so much and id love to go back.

dylanthedragon · 05/05/2022 19:48

All ready suggested but Malaga is a great weekend trip with lots of cheap flights. Budapest is great. Or Belfast if you want to stay in the UK but I'd recommend avoiding going around the 12 July.

If you are feeling adventurous and happy to fly further, Tbilisi is an amazing city.

snowgirl1 · 05/05/2022 19:59

Agree with lots of the places others have mentioned. Strasbourg is very pretty. Luxembourg also good for a weekend.

Frazzled2207 · 05/05/2022 20:03

Krakow is fab.
Nice?
Athens

cptartapp · 05/05/2022 20:13

Have done many of the places mentioned.
Rome and Seville are my favourites.

Oblomov22 · 05/05/2022 20:21

Making notes. Been to most. Like sound of Funchal. Haven't been to Riga either.

100problems · 05/05/2022 20:22

Biarritz
