As due to the cost of living crisis, me and my partner cannot afford to go this year!

Can any of you afford to go?

No, I have suddenly found myself down to one income, there is no holiday for me and the kids this year. We didn't have a holiday last year either, or the year before. DH and I had planned to take a late honeymoon this year but that wasn't to be.

TheCanyon · 03/05/2022 21:44

Nope mostly because 4 out of 6 of us need new passports. Though months ago we did book a UK summer holiday, had we not of done that we would be going nowhere now with the increased costs.

We're good at finding bargain flights/apartments, probably cost less going abroad!

Springandsummerarecoming · 03/05/2022 21:45

Yes. Just. We haven’t been since 2018 and really want to go this year as think we will definitely be out priced for next year but don’t know where is good to go with an unvaccinated teen and child. Need to research that and then research holiday insurance and see what would be covered if one of us got covid before we go or when we are out there. We lost nearly £1000 in 2020 when we had to cancel and really can’t afford to lose again.

We have 3 booked for this year (all were booked in the last 3 months). We hadn't travelled abroad since feb 2020 so feel like i need to / want to make up for it. We have had 1 trip already and 2 more planned for summer. I would rather cut back elsewhere e.g. we have changed supermarket, been concious of impulse purchases and cancelled the cleaner which all goes some way towards funding the holidays.

OnaBegonia · 03/05/2022 21:57

I've been a few short breaks and going abroad inOctober.
There are plenty affordable breaks/holidays, despite the MN 'where can I go on 10k' threads. Cornwall
for £3k nonsense.

It is underwritten by axa, has great reviews, and covers so much more than other policies. E.g. child who isnt travelling tests positive and being turned away at the airport for having symptoms.
Thankfully we haven't had to claim on it but the reviews online from those that have were good

Lastqueenofscotland2 · 03/05/2022 21:59

I’ve been skiing already and am going to Dublin for a bit in the summer.
Otherwise all my leave has been eaten up with weddings/family stuff which is mainly in Devon and Scotland

MrsTxx · 03/05/2022 21:59

Yes, first time abroad for my 3 year old and our first holiday as a couple in five years. Took a lot of saving and won’t be going away next year. So it’s not a regular thing

Mum2threemonkeys · 03/05/2022 22:01

We are going abroad in a couple of weeks. It's the holiday we should have gone on last year

bringonsummer2022 · 03/05/2022 22:02

Yes. It'll be our first time abroad in three years.

Newnormal99 · 03/05/2022 22:02

Yes 2 breaks away planned this year. In my defence we have not been abroad since 2018 and before that was 2012 and 2006 so it's not a regular thing!

Whatelsecouldibecalled · 03/05/2022 22:02

Nope. I'm a teacher and we just can't afford school holiday prices now we have a toddler too

AntarcticTern · 03/05/2022 22:03

Yes, we have saved money by not going abroad last year or the year before (plus three cancelled school residential trips for the DC).

Undertheoldlindentree · 03/05/2022 22:04

Not been abroad for a family holiday for well over a decade. DC and I are resigned to it now. Single parent. Sometimes I feel OK about it (we do spend £ on DC sports and music lessons etc, so it's about choices). Othertimes I feel it's 's just something that's 'not for the likes of us' and it gets me down a bit on their behalf.... 🙄

Keladrythesaviour · 03/05/2022 22:05

Yes, all being well going to take our 2020 holiday - I can't wait but so nervous in case something happens and it doesn't go ahead. Two years of cancellations has made me not believe it will happen until we are there (and then will probably worry whilst we are away that something will cut it short!) I would say we've saved up over the two years but kept using the money for other things so had a few very tight months to get the cash together.

ChittyChittyBoomBoom · 03/05/2022 22:05

I’ve worked overtime and saved like crazy to be able to take my 3 dc away. I’m very lucky to have been able to do that. It will be their first time on an aeroplane and staying in an AI hotel so it’s a big deal to us. I doubt it will happen next year.

FawnFrenchieMum · 03/05/2022 22:10

We are, tomorrow in fact but taking the kids out of school. If it wasn’t already paid for then we probably wouldn’t be this year.

Notjustabrunette · 03/05/2022 22:10

Yes, we went at Easter as was cheaper than going in the summer. And British summers are nice anyway. We pushed the boat out as haven’t had a holiday in three years and have been through some though times and really needed it as a family.

ListenLinda · 03/05/2022 22:14

Yes, but we booked it last year and paid it off over time.
Spent a big chunk this month on new holiday clothes for the DC as not much still fits.
We have just spends to sort and then we go in 2.5 weeks.
it’s out first time abroad since 2018, DD was 18 months old and I was pregnant with DS so looking forward to this one.
it’ll be the last one for a while, as school fines start from next year.

MinglingFlamingo · 03/05/2022 22:27

I'm going to France! It's a holiday which was booked and payed for in 2019 and it's been rolled over to the same week for the last 2 years.

Thanks I will take a look. Just not sure how much I want to risk the kids being so excited and then getting turned away at the airport! Or catching the virus on the plane and ruining the holiday.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 03/05/2022 22:34

Yes. Very lucky to have low outgoings (mortgage and bills come to about £700pm total).

Hophop26 · 03/05/2022 22:44

Yes, we are going long haul for the first time in years, and went skiing this winter, first time for our DC. Would have been more prudent to put money towards house refurb etc but we had years of struggling to afford budget uk break and camping and can finally have foreign holidays so going for it and not going to feeL guilty for it, will cut back after and if it’s back to camping next year then il live with that!

Louise0701 · 03/05/2022 22:49

Yes. We went abroad in Feb, go again for May half term and then in the summer.

caringcarer · 03/05/2022 22:52

We have holiday home in France and have not been on a holiday anywhere for 3 years due to Covid. Now awaiting foster child's passport renewal. Only noticed when we went to book ferry we would.need to renew it. If we can't get his done, we won't go either in summer. Maybe we can go October half term.
