What makes people look/appear younger?

This is not a stealth boast! Ive been musing on this today. I'm in my early 40s and sometimes people think I am younger when they meet me. I've got forehead and 11 lines as well as crow's feet. I'm very average in looks. Don't wear a lot of make up. Not polished or overly groomed.

I do have brightly coloured hair and stretched ears (had them for years). I also have naturally very thick dark eyebrows which are in fashion at the moment. I wonder if these help?

I also wonder if it's down to a perception of women in their 40s looking a certain way? I didn't used to get as many people thinking I was younger in my late 30s.

Or maybe it's something that everyone days out of politeness? 🤷🏼‍♀️

Are any of the young looking posters able to post a picture so we can see if we can pinpoint what it is that makes them look young?

I can't help - I'm only 37 and having just listened to the inane shrieks of hordes of graduate aged kids traipse up and down the stairs to an open house in the flat upstairs I feel ancient and ready for retirement Grin

I definitely want to see a picture of these people aged 30-60 who are mistaken for teens.

Personally I’m often mistaken for a child because I look so young. I was in the park with my kids the other day and a preschool teacher took my hand and led me off with her group! Tee hee hee. She thought I was one of her little children because I look about 3-6 years old despite being in my late 20s. I drink a lot of water though.

😂

Mytoddlerisamazing · 30/04/2022 22:23

Long blonde (naturalish) hair. My bone structure is shit, I'm not thin, and definitely not rich. Still regularly mistaken for 10+ years younger than I am.

It’s so unbelievable that I don’t believe it ;)

MN is full of women who have people regularly telling them they don’t look their age. In reality, everyone looks their age.

🙄 I was told last week I look at least ten years younger than I am, before I disclosed my age, and I’ve been told it quite a few times, at least double figures, but whatever, believe what you will ..

Absentmindedwoman · 30/04/2022 22:28

Why is nobody happy to post a picture then?

If you name change and then change back, the photo won't be linked with any other posts. I mean sure someone you know could spot you I guess, but so what if there is nothing connected to your picture?

Ah indulge me somebody I just want to study a youthful face and see how I could channel some of it for myself Grin

Why are all these people telling you how old you look before you disclose your age? Are they just approaching you, squinting, and going ‘you’re twenty one!’ Otherwise I struggle to see how it comes up before you mention age.

But if that’s really true and someone believed that you were 10 years younger, how on earth did the conversation come up that they just guessed that you’re 40 or whatever and not 50? If they really believed toj were 40 it would be entirely unremarkable and nothing to comment on

I cannot believe the number of women on here who look young for their age. I’m jealous

If it makes you feel any better, I look about 10 years older than my age. I'm fucking knackered and look it!

GalactatingGoddess · 30/04/2022 22:49

@SushiShopSearch I'm assuming OP means ears with stretchers/plugs in (instead of earrings) which literally stretches your earring holes out

Google ear stretchers and it'll come up

I get told I look younger than 57 and will post a pic so you can all judge me 😂

Don't. It'll just end up with people telling you look like an 85 year old who's had a hard life.

Penguinsaregreat · 30/04/2022 22:55

I remember the first time I met a friend of a friend. I had invited friends round and my friend brought this friend. I thought she was a child she looked so young. She was average height say 5 foot 4 with straight natural coloured hair, just a dull brown colour past her shoulders, the type a child has who is too young to pester to have it styled and dyed. She did not wear any make up. She was slim and wore quite ordinary clothes, nothing tight fitting, low cut, or short. I asked what I could get her to drink and I think she asked for juice or water, she doesn't drink alcohol. She then proceeded to get out her knitting! In fact she might have been wearing something she had knitted such as a cardigan. As I got to know her I was amazed to learn she was an adult. She still looked like a child when she had her own baby. I imagine most people assumed she was the child's sister. In fact she was a step parent too a 12 year old child. I would not describe her as attractive or striking in any way. None of her features stood out she just looked quite plain but incredibly young.
Dh has a relative like this too she is nearly 30 but could pass for a 6th former very easily. Again nothing about her is striking. She is very ordinary looking. Very thin, very pale. Mousey hair, piercings, tatooes, glasses, no make up. Wears alternative clothing extremely shy. Her limbs aren't toned just incredibly gangly and thin.

It just came up in conversation the last time. Before that it was a subject for discussion for my bfs family.

Scottishflower65 · 30/04/2022 23:01

yes I’ll be judged as at least 100!
yes and have hard had a very hard life. 6 kids. Numerous arsehole relationships.

NandorTheRelentlessCleaner · 30/04/2022 23:01

I am one of those people who tells others they look young Grin

For example,,if someone asks how old they look I always lie. If I think "early fifties", I'll say 41

It's an easy way to make people feel happy

Scottishflower65 · 30/04/2022 23:02

Have had even….

Imherenowandthen · 30/04/2022 23:02

No I’m not going to the trouble of changing my name to post a photo which would identify me to anyone on here who knows me in real life 🙄I don’t really care who believes me or not.

But in double figures? More than 10 people (who are loose enough acquaintances that they don’t even know enough about you to guess your age, let some know your actual age) randomly suggest your age before the subject has come up? That’s really unusual. I can’t imagine more than 10 different people I don’t know very well telling me before I’ve asked that they think I’m x age.

Penguinsaregreat · 30/04/2022 23:13

I always lie too if someone asks me how old I think they look. If I told the truth they would 9/10 times get offended. I suppose it's the same when someone tells you the name of their baby you are hardly going to reply, "Oh that's a vile, scummy, chav name!" Are you 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

XenoBitch · 30/04/2022 23:16

I feel a little dumb here... what are "11 lines"?

theodosiaburr · 30/04/2022 23:20

I’m nearly 30 but always told I look 18. I have a very round baby face, still get acne, quite small and petite, small teeth, young voice. I hate it.

CounsellorTroi · 30/04/2022 23:23

All these people who regularly get mistaken for 10-15 years younger than their age - how do you know? Do you tell people your age? Do you ask people to guess your age? Do people ask you your age?

NeedAHoliday2021 · 30/04/2022 23:31

Can anyone clarify what number of ear piercings tell you re age? @ASDorNO I’m curious. My friends are similar ages but varied number of piercings.
