What makes people look/appear younger?

This is not a stealth boast! Ive been musing on this today. I'm in my early 40s and sometimes people think I am younger when they meet me. I've got forehead and 11 lines as well as crow's feet. I'm very average in looks. Don't wear a lot of make up. Not polished or overly groomed.

I do have brightly coloured hair and stretched ears (had them for years). I also have naturally very thick dark eyebrows which are in fashion at the moment. I wonder if these help?

I also wonder if it's down to a perception of women in their 40s looking a certain way? I didn't used to get as many people thinking I was younger in my late 30s.

Or maybe it's something that everyone days out of politeness? 🤷🏼‍♀️

@Penguinsaregreat

why the annoyance at the nurse? My mum was 62 when she had her final period. In her 50s she was still having monthly periods so a pregnancy whilst unlikely probably still was a possibility..

shudders at the thought 😂

Ah yes, before modern contraceptives the infamous 'change baby'. My grandmother was 19 when her younger brother arrived, I don't know how old my great grandmother was but 19 years between her first and last child she must have been in her 50s at least.

You don't get as many Gerards these days do you?

Highly unlikely though, the egg quality will be totally buggered at that age..

You wouldn’t want to risk it though would you? My Grandmother had her last baby 2 months shy of 50. My mother had her last baby at 26 but obviously still had regular periods in her 50s.

Thank god for contraception.

A forced smile helps loads. Misery is really ageing.

Sleep, exercise, water, clear skin, no greys, bit of light makeup, not dressed like mutton and not dressed frumpy, not desperately clinging to youth with ridicolous botox and fillers that make the face look swollen and stapled.

At least you’re not like me. I’m 34 and people think I look 16, 17 at most! I hate it! And now that I’m older it’s gets harder even when I prove it with id

CharSiu · 15/09/2023 09:36

I’m not white and as they say Asian don’t raisin. I’m Chinese and have a very small frame. It’s also culturally frowned on to have dark skin as denotes a field worker. So I was raised to not sunbathe and wear hats. Also it’s not a big thing to drink in Chinese culture. Many of my relatives are teetotal, I’m not but I don’t drink much and not often.

Plus Asian food is a ton of veg, a little meat and a small portion of carbs. I am amazed at how much bread and cake people eat plus stuff like biscuits is just not on my radar. It’s just the way I was raised though. I recently joined a dance class and someone there thought I was 15 years younger it was a U3A class as I’m actually late fifties and retired and they thought I was in the wrong place.

Exercise, light makeup, fashionable clothes, good figure and good skin

Sleep, good diet

DinosApple · 16/09/2023 17:46

As a slightly overweight 39yo with dark hair and glasses I got IDd. I was wearing a baseball cap.

That's all I put it down to as the only other time I've been IDd was age 17, so wear a baseball cap!

Genetics

Exercise
Taught and smooth skin, thick hair, good teeth, subtle makeup, good posture

DontGiveMeThatOldCrap · 16/09/2023 18:21

I'm mid-60s, have got no crow's feet or forehead lines. I've got marionette lines, though. My skin is clear and bright. I've never smoked or sunbathed, and I don't often drink.

CambsAlways · 16/09/2023 22:31

Healthy eating, good sleep patterns, looking after your skin, staying out of the sun, very little alcohol . No smoking! Very little makeup, good genetics help

AlrightThen · 18/09/2023 13:39

Them having kind attitude to others. It makes them look innocent, therefore younger.

Marchitectmummy · 18/09/2023 13:44

I think posture and movement too. Holding yourself well, being flexible and moving at a good speed all make people look younger.

Then if you have grey hair, your hair needs to be well looked after and same with face.

Drcrafty · 18/09/2023 14:32

I mostly look nearly 50. I am nearly 50!
However, I work with students and they often guess I am ten years younger - it comes up as I have a 15+ year career before this one, and that surprises them. This is ONLY because they picture someone nearly 50 as being like Sofia from the Golden girls. Sofia I am not!
