New employee is a fake, where to go from here?

It's a large organisation and I just had to send off her paperwork, passport, things like that

She was given the job after her second interview last week.

However, she has emailed me these documents (fine), and her birth certificate says born in September 2002?

That makes her 19?

This is a problem because, for example, her CV says she was an Executive Assistant to a Director in 2018? When she would've been in school?!

I've asked HR, who haven't replied properly, I've asked them to call. But someone replied to my email of concern with 'so you don't want this new me ever of staff? Why not?'

What can actually be done about this?

Did she make the tea for her Mum 's Avon business?

londonnotlangdon · 28/04/2022 07:01

@Hippywannabe Honestly I'm baffled. She looks to be about 27/28 I'd say. She comes across that way. I wouldn't have bat an eyelid if she claimed to be 30

If HR aren't concerned there's not much you can do. You've raised your concern. Have they taken in her references? (I bet they haven't.)

If she doesn't have the experience it will become apparent when she starts working. If she's actually good though, I suppose it doesn't really matter?

Paq · 28/04/2022 07:02

If it's a large organisation you should have a policy or process for checking references etc.? Are you her LM or do you work in HR?

Hippywannabe · 28/04/2022 07:03

How weird! Keep us updated, I am now curious!

Chica10 · 28/04/2022 07:03

She could have left school at 16 and this was her first job but perhaps she just exaggerated the job description?

This is what I thought too.

londonnotlangdon · 28/04/2022 07:05

I'm just the line manager

Surely it matters because it's all just completely false? The salary is around the £40k mark! London based

I have already taken in her references... we only ask for an email back. And we got one from two separate sources

One of which is for an employment starting in 2019... 'Head of Admin and Assistant to Chair'

What if she's had a new identity, e.g. Witness protection ect, but forgot to match up the dates in her cv ?

theshavenraven · 28/04/2022 07:05

If she's lied about experience it will soon become apparent

DoubleChinWoes2 · 28/04/2022 07:06

If she was born in 2002, she would have 16 into 2018 and she could have left school and been a PA quite easily in that timeline.

I think you should wait and talk to her about it before assuming she's lied.

I think if she has lied, it's best to withdraw the offer. You can do that easily enough if she hasn't started with you, although you need to clearly set out it's for dishonestly rather than being 19 (because otherwise you may find yourself being taken to a tribunal for age discrimination).

She may be telling the truth, and if so, I take it she's still the best person for the job? Then I'd be recommending you continue with the offer

londonnotlangdon · 28/04/2022 07:06

Her very first CV entry is something along the lines of junior assistant. The job started in 2015 and ended some years later - The job title then changed on her CV, same company, and she says she was quickly promoted there when she filled in for a colleague in an emergency and then got the job

Is she on a trial period? I'd just make sure HR has checked her references and crack on. She might be great.

Given that nobody seems to be able to get any staff I'd definitely be giving her a go.

OnlyClothes · 28/04/2022 07:06

That email from HR sounds very mangled 🤔

garlicandsapphires · 28/04/2022 07:07

It may be that she is unusually accomplished for such a young age!

skix · 28/04/2022 07:07

She could well have worked while being at school, but those sort of job titles sound like exaggerated grandiose versions of jobs!

Credit to her if she's blagged her way into a 40k job with zero experience at that age - getting through two interviews with you all without anyone realising. I collapse in nerves and hate interviews at more than twice her age!

Rainbowshine · 28/04/2022 07:08

Does the document have her photo and date of birth? Or is there no photo ID? I have come across people using others’ ID, either to obtain work or because they are being forced to. I have also seen fake documents for right to work checks. Call HR rather than email and speak to someone about your concerns about how the details don’t stack up.

TidyDancer · 28/04/2022 07:08

It does sound odd but could be that she has inflated her job title and responsibilities. She may have worked part time while at school or been employed in a parents business.

SilverPeacock · 28/04/2022 07:08

You need to pin down HR on what the policy is on withdrawing job offers. Long shot but she hasn’t accidentally sent the wrong birth certificate or something? Someone will need to ask her about it I would have thought. Employing a liar is never going to be a good idea.

She wouldn't even have been in Year 10 in 2015?

It's really odd to ask people for their birth certificate, what is the DOB on her passport?

So in 2015 she was only 13 then

londonnotlangdon · 28/04/2022 07:10

I don't think it's her using someone else's birth certificate surely? She sounds very British, looks British. Her mannerisms. She seemed very professional and able to command a room, speak in meetings etc

Yes I could be wrong, but it's unlikely.

So she’d have been 15 in that role?! I thought all of the ones you’ve mentioned previously seemed ok but this one 🤔

MrsClatterbuck · 28/04/2022 07:11

What are her academic qualifications
